What Are the Rules of Soccer?

David Pozen at Balkinization - 7 hours ago
VAR is ruining soccer. I wrote a postlast summer, after the end of the World Cup, arguing that the introduction of Video Assistant Referees had led to a more mechanical and mindless style of refereeing. One manifestation was the dramatic spike in the number of penalty kicks awarded. VAR robbed referees of the discretion to make some of the context-sensitive judgments on which the game had always relied. Since that post was published, things only seem to have gotten worse. VAR-induced delays at this summer’s Copa América and Women’s World Cup have unsettled the rhythm of both comp... more »

I must declare a bit of an interest in the Tory leadership contest. As someone who follows matters pertaining to the Conservative Party, I was hoping for a bit of entertainment. Unfortunately, one reason why Tory MPs made sure Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt are the last two for the members' ballot was to avoid precisely such a scenario. Acceleration Of Himalayan Glacier Loss Is Due To Warming - Billion Need Climate Resilience On Rivers Like Yangte, Ganges & Indus

Robert Walker at Science 2.0 blogs - 8 hours ago
This has lead to some clickbait headlines such as “Glacier melting doubled since 2000, spy satellites show”. However, that’ not what is new about this study; its figures just confirmed earlier results. Increased glacier loss is one of the more robust predictions of climate change, though the details are harder to model. The new thing about this study is that it covered the entire region in a uniform way. This let the authors conclude that the ice is most likely being lost due to warming rather than to precipitation changes or soot from cities. read more

President Trump Says He Does Not Believe This Was A Deliberate Act By The Iran Government. Probably A General Made The Decision
