Hardline hornets in hats (featuring Kate Hoey and BBC Complaints)

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 9 hours ago
hardline Regular readers will know that I've had a hornet in my Homburg hat for months about the BBC's use of the word 'hardline'. I closely tracked the BBC's use of the word and found it was nearly always used about certain kinds of people. To recap, the *VAST* majority of the BBC's recent use of the word 'hardline' - and its beloved sibling 'hardliners' - have been connected to Brexit-supporters, especially those in favour of leaving the EU on WTO terms (i.e. supporters of a 'no-deal', crash-out-and-apocalypse Brexit). But 'the *others*' in my surveys have been equally predicta... more »

The U.S. Marine Corps Wants Anti-Ship Weapons for "Island-Warfare." Here's Why That's A Big Deal.

The feel-good story of last month comes out of the U.S. Marine Corps, whose leadership has set in motion a crash effort to field anti-ship missiles for island warfare. Is Russia's S-400 a Paper Tiger or a Real Air Force Killer?

Charlie Gao at Test Feed Using Fields - 11 hours ago
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * [image: Wikimedia Commons] Sweden has some thoughts on this. In March 2019, the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI) published a report that alleges that Russia’s vaunted Anti-Access/Area-Denial (A2/AD) capabilities in the Baltic region are overrated. It presents a technical and doctrinal argument for why Russian long-range missile capabilities, in the anti-air, anti-ship, and anti-land realms, may have been overstated in the media and in professional analysis. One of the key systems the paper takes aim at is the Russian S-400 air defense system. I... more »

Battleship Down: The Shocking Facts Most People Don't Know about the Pearl Harbor Attack

Warfare History Network at Test Feed Using Fields - 13 hours ago
*Warfare History Network* *Security, Americas* [image: Wikimedia Commons] A true tragedy. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 the primary target was Battleship Row. These capital ships had to suffice since the American carriers were away. Among the battleships lined up alongside Ford Island was the USS West Virginia, a twenty-year-old warship with a crew of over a thousand. During the battle the ship took seven torpedo hits along the port side along with two bomb strikes around its superstructure. The ship rapidly flooded, settling on the floor of the h... more »

Meet the Sturmgewehr 44: The Nazi Assault Rifle Being Used in the Syrian Civil War

Sebastien Roblin at Test Feed Using Fields - 13 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Middle East* [image: Wikimedia Commons] How can this be? We explain. In 2012, rebels of the Free Syrian Army posted a video in which they uncovered an arms cache containing five thousand assault rifles. Though not an uncommon episode in a civil war then in its early stages, what was truly bizarre was that the rebels had uncovered a cache of Sturmgewehr 44s—an assault rifle designed by Nazi Germany seventy years earlier. How did a weapon only produced in the final years of World War II begin appearing in a Middle Eastern civil war seventy years later?... more »

The increase in activity is around a site known as Sanumdong, where North Korea assembled most of its ballistic missiles and rockets. Four American Myths

Robert Reich writes that there are four great American myths: The first tale: The Triumphant Individual. It’s the little guy or gal who works hard, takes risks, believes in him or herself, and eventually gains wealth, fame and honor. The tale is epitomized in the life of Abe Lincoln, born in a log cabin, who believed that “the value of life is to improve one’s condition.” The moral: with enough effort and courage, anyone can make it in America. The second tale: The Benevolent Community This is the story of neighbors and friends who pitch in for the common good. It goes back to Jo... more »

If we would follow the advice, so frequently urged upon us, to adjust our cultural attitudes to the present status of scientific achievement, we would in all earnest adopt a way of life in which speech is no longer meaningful.
