While working on something else, I had occasion to revisit the “Hippler Letter.” Hippler was the Air Force lieutenant colonel who supplied the Condon Committee with their instructions concerning what they were supposed to find during their investigation. I’ve looked at this in the past and you can read the letter and the analysis here: http://kevinrandle.blogspot.com/2007/03/hippler-letter.html The important part of the letter, for this discussion, is in the third paragraph. Hippler is explaining what they, the Air Force, had done in preparation for the Condon Committee investigati... more »

The face of 2020

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 11 hours ago
These past few days through the magic of the twisted media and the ocean of hate on twitter and FB we have seen the 2020 election in the faces of a bunch of Catholic kids waiting for a bus to take them to March for Life in Washington DC. Hate for the unborn and the people trying to save them, and hate for our president--that's all the Democrats have. All you have to do is tell the truth, and their lies will crumble. Be Martin Luther King, Jr. for our time.

Everyone's Sorry-- Except Trump, Who Isn't Sorry For Anything

Did you watch Jake Tapper's CNN show Sunday? Is this what the primary is going to be about-- a parade of unaccomplished candidates apologizing for their unsavory pasts? Then it all becomes a test of who you believe and who you think is just an opportunist faking it. (Gillibrand is the worst so far-- refusing to apologize for destroying Al Franken's career, while making up the crappiest excuses for why she espoused xenophobic, racist, gun-loving policies as a House member-- basically blaming her constituents and demonstrating how she was/is a complete sociopath.) * This is my article in BusinessWorld last January 18, 2019. The Philippines has a huge and increasing economic potential mainly because of its big population, estimated at 108 million as of mid-2018 and the 13th largest in the world. Which means more entrepreneurs and workers, more producers and consumers. We are also an archipelago with more than 7,500 islands and islets, lots of white sand beaches and deep fishing grounds (under Chinese control in certain areas now, to be sure). This means huge potential in tourism and fishery. Other countries, as we now see, are envious of coa... more »

Rate of Return For Iraq’s Displaced Increased At End of 2018

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 12 hours ago
For the last year and a half the rate of return for Iraq’s displaced (IDPs) has been steadily decreasing. With homes destroyed, the lack of jobs and services, people being banned from their home areas due to their affiliation with the Islamic State, and others starting a new life fewer people were making the decision to go back. At the end of 2018 that pattern changed with more people going home than the previous period. There were 1,802,832 IDPs at the end of December 2018. That was down from 1,866,648 in October for a total of 63,816 returns over the two months. That averaged ou... more »

*The Intercept:* *Beyond BuzzFeed: The 10 Worst, Most Embarrassing U.S. Media Failures on the Trump/Russia Story* Buzzfeed was once notorious for traffic-generating “listicles”, but has since become an impressive outlet for deep investigative journalism under editor-in-chief Ben Smith. This and that for your Tuesday reading. - Larry Elliott reports on Oxfam's latest study on wealth inequality, showing that 26 extremely rich people now own as much as half of the world's population. And Ronald Quaroni notes that half of Saskatchewan families are on the brink of insolvency - the highest level of any province in an already-bleak national survey. - Given that inequality and individual insecurity, it should be little surprise that trust in government and social institutions is eroding (as Louis Putterman points out). My Support for Charter Schools

This is not accurate, and School Choice Week seems like the perfect time to once again explain when I do, in fact, support charter schools (here I am talking about one that I think is just fine). These are the characteristics that need to be in place. *Financial Honesty* Virtually all of the major charter/choice systems set up in this country are founded on a huge lie-- that a community can run multiple school district with the same amount of money it used to spend on... more »

Cicero’s Reasons for Philosophizing on the Nature of the Gods

A first-century AD bust of CiceroMarcus Tullius Cicero, at the beginning of his *The Nature of the Gods*, gives three reasons for which he labored with great energy to write the book. The three reasons are: *He has leisure*. He had very little to do because the Roman Empire was under Caesar’s will and guidance. Cicero was a man of action and idleness was abhorrent to him, so he devoted himself to philosophizing on the nature of the Gods. *He wants to achieve something great for Rome*. He wanted to bequeath to his Latin speaking countryman a complete encyclopedia of Greek philosophy... more »
