Global Cops: Will US Jail Chinese Tech Exec?

Daniel McAdams at 9 hours ago
Did President Trump really have no idea that a top Chinese businesswoman and member of the country's political elite was going to be arrested in Canada just as the US president was having dinner with Chinese leader Xi Jinping? If so, did the neocons surrounding him knowingly keep him in the dark? The implications of this arrest are incalculable, as the Huawei CFO, Weng Wanzhou faces 30 years in US prison for allegedly violating US sanctions on Iran! What to expect? Tune in to today's Liberty Report:

Mueller’s Investigation is Missing One Thing: A Crime

Peter Van Buren at 9 hours ago
[image: undefined] A baby born when Robert Mueller started his investigation would be talking by now. But would she have anything to say? We last looked at what Mueller had publicly—and what he didn’t have—some 10 months ago, and I remained skeptical that the Trump campaign had in any way colluded with Russia. It’s worth another look now, but first let’s give away the ending (spoiler alert!): there is still no real evidence of, well, much of anything significant about Russiagate. One thing that is clear is that the investigation seems to be ending. Mueller’s office has reportedly ev... more »

(Departed) soul mates???

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 9 hours ago
This is one of the more unusual relationship breakup stories to pop up. An Irish Jack Sparrow impersonator who married the ghost of a pirate has revealed she has split from her 300-year-old hubby. Earlier this year Amanda Sparrow Large, 46, said she’d found her “soulmate” in a Haitian pirate from the 1700s who was executed for thieving on the high seas. The loved-up couple were legally married by a shaman priest in a boat off the Irish coast in international waters. But now the mum from Drogheda, Co Louth, has revealed the unlikely union is over. Does The Word "Progressive" Mean Anything Anymore?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 12 hours ago
*4 progressives recently elected to Congress* When I was first getting into politics-- believe it or not, I was (briefly) the president of my college's Young Democrats-- the word "liberal" was worn proudly by people on the left. Now? It was tarnished from all sides and replaced by "progressive." I want to talk about *that* word... but first let me run off on a somewhat related tangent-- another political word-- the usage of which often bugs me to distraction. The word "moderate" is the most comfortable political term for Americans. It drives me crazy that Beltway insiders and dumb-b... more »

Brexit is Prohibition

Gerard N. Magliocca at Balkinization - 12 hours ago
I wonder whether Brexit is Britain's Prohibition. By that I mean that any nation can back a major change with the best of intentions only to learn from experience that the decision was flawed. The only solution, in the end, is a reversal of that decision by the same constitutional process. There is a difference in that Parliament is not legally obligated by the 2016 referendum to leave the EU, but in practice the withdrawal decision cannot be undone without a second referendum. Prohibition was a disaster, but Brexit shows that no constitutional system is immune from them.

Naming Rights

cmaadmin at Diverse - 12 hours ago
I’ve thought a lot about this seemingly simple act of reading names at Commencement. Mostly I’ve thought that this ritual is far from simple: it punctuates one of the most complex learning experiences of college — figuring out who you are and what that who will be called. The 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes this powerful marker of human identity and human dignity. By signing on to this agreement (as have nearly 200 countries have) states must act in the best interests of children by complying with basic rights, including, vitally, the right to th... more »

The Nightmare Scenario: Imagine if China Tried to Invade Taiwan

*Alex Bierman* *Security, Asia* The PLA is now better equipped than it ever has been to launch a military invasion of Taiwan. This “nightmare” scenario is a looming threat to Taiwan’s continued existence as an independent and sovereign state. Since founding the People’s Republic of China (PRC, China) in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has made no secret of its intention to subjugate the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan), including by force if perceived as necessary and worth the cost. Security In Iraq Dec 1-7, 2018

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 12 hours ago
Violence and casualties remained extremely low in Iraq during the first week of December 2018. While the insurgency has always ebbed and flowed the poor weather and heavy flooding continued, which probably put a major damper on the ability of the militants to carry out their operations. There were just 34 incidents reported in Iraq during the week. That was up from 28 the last full week of November, but still below the 40-50 incidents the country was seeing in previous months. Once again, Baghdad had the most incidents with 12 after only 5 from November 22-28. *Security Incident... more »

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-- Not A Garden Variety Democratic Back-Bencher

I couldn't vote in my own Twitter poll, but if I could have, I would've picked "inspirational." Maybe I should have offered "inspiring" instead. One respondent suggested "fierce" should've been an option. Another castigated me for not making "courageous" an option. As you can see, it was a battle between those who see her as inspirational and those who see her as brilliant. The youngest woman ever elected to Congress, Ocasio-Cortez has drawn the wrath of the establishment, first by beating "the next Speaker of the House," icon of congressional corruption Joe Crowley, and then by s... more »

*Greenland is losing ice at fastest rate in 350 years (?)* *Is anybody bothered that the researchers examined meltwater that did NOT run off into the sea to estimate how much meltwater DID run off into the sea? A large question about the validity of their measuring instrument there, I think. That one type of melting estimates the other is just an assumption and not a terribly plausible one. Processes in the two areas are known to be different in one way so why are there not differences in other ways? And they used results from a few icecores in one part of Greenland to estima...more »

First Google had a bunch of employees walk out to protest sexual harassment arbitration, and it rescinded its arbitration policy. Now other companies are following as employees push back. Facebook, Microsoft, Uber, Square, Airbnb and eBay have all rescinded or said they will rescind their forced arbitration agreements for sexual harassment claims. It isn't just tech firms that are getting pressure from employees. When Harvard law students threatened to boycott law firm Kirkland and Ellis because of mandatory arbitration agreements, the firm quickly did a 180. Now students at other l... more »
