The Strange Story of the AK-12 Rifle

In early 2018, the AK-12 made by Kalashnikov Concern was officially recommended by the Russian Ministry of Defense for adoption by the Russian Army. This marked the probable end of a long search for the next rifle for the Russian military. But the adopted rifle was ... more »

Second wave feminism and assault

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 12 hours ago
Forty-five years ago I'd occasionally attend a "consciousness raising" group during the blossoming of second wave feminism. I wrote book reviews for a female publication put out by some OSU librarian-feminists. Women studies departments were being developed to capitalize on the interest. It was the era of “women’s lib.” I don't recall the homes exactly, but they were in the OSU campus area. And were at night! Sitting on the floor with our arms wrapped around legs seemed to be required, even if there was a free chair in the room. I may have attended with a woman in my neighborhood... more »

Constitutional Rot Reaches the Supreme Court

JB at Balkinization - 13 hours ago
The fight over the Kavanaugh appointment exemplifies our country's advanced case of constitutional rot. The rot has been growing for some time, and has now reached the Supreme Court of the United States. The Supreme Court is unlikely to save us from decay. We will have to do that ourselves. As I have argued in this lecture, our country has gone through cycles of constitutional rot and renewal throughout its history. We are at (what we can only hope is) the most extreme point in a cycle of constitutional rot. Unfortunately, we are also at the high point of a cycle of party polariza... more »

Three Conservative Futures

In his fun safari of the exotic and befuddled fauna at Conservative Party conference, Owen Jones argued this was a gathering devoid of ideas and lacking all purpose. Yet among the despondency, he warned against Labour complacency. As the most successful liberal democratic party in the Western world, it would be high folly to simply write them off. And he's right. But also, a proven track record of reinvention doesn't automatically mean the Tories can do it again. Just as there is nothing inevitable about the ends of socialism, there is no mechanism cranking out Tory wins. Every Con... more »

State-owned arms manufacturer Rostech will soon start work on a guided 152-millimeter projectile, Rostech official Alexander Kochkin told TASS. “Once out of the artillery barrel the new shell will follow an ordinary ballistic flight path most of the time,” TASS said. “Near the target, the built-in control system will be activated to correct the trajectory.” To adjust the shell's trajectory, options include fins or jet thrusters. “Kochkin r... more »

Mr. President, the time is now to take action to prevent a space Pearl Harbor. Since China successfully tested its ground-based direct-ascent antisatellite (ASAT) ballistic missile in 2007, the United States and its allies have been mesmerized by this highly-visible event and have neglected China’s development and demonstration of rendezvous proximation operations in space.
