Syrian Strikes are 'Legal' – But Only According to the 'Law of the Jungle'

James George Jatras at - 12 hours ago
[image: undefined] The full extent of the damage to international peace and security caused by the US-led Syrian strikes will take some time to become clear. But its impact on the very concept of legality in international affairs is already evident. Simply put, the most powerful county in the world and its chief satellites, the UK and France, have thrown the rule of law into the trash can. The only "law" now is the law of the jungle. There is no going back. Ironically, the attack itself was claimed by its perpetrators as enforcement of legality, not of its obliteration. For example... more »

Trump’s Disastrous Syria Attack

Ron Paul at - 12 hours ago
[image: undefined] Over the weekend, President Trump celebrated firing more than 100 missiles into Syria by Tweeting, “Mission Accomplished!” They say if you cannot learn from history you are condemned to repeat it. So I guess we are repeating it. We all remember that “Mission Accomplished” was the banner behind then-President Bush as he gloated aboard a US navy ship that the war in Iraq had been won. After his “victory,” however, some 4,000 US military personnel were killed, perhaps a million Iraqis were killed, and the country’s infrastructure and social fabric were so badly dest... more »

*It's Only Money* The federal government reported a budget deficit of $666 billion for its 2017 fiscal year, but a new comprehensive accounting published by the U.S. Treasury shows that federal finances deteriorated by $1,157 billion in 2017—a figure 74% worse than the deficit. This thorough accounting is mandated by a federal law that requires the Treasury and White House to produce an annual report on the “overall financial position” of the federal government. Data from this report also shows that the federal government has amassed $89.9 trillion in debts, liabilities, and unfund... more »

This Is How A Swedish Sub Took Out A U.S. Carrier In A Naval Exercise

*Popular Mechanics:* *How a Plucky Swedish Sub Took Out a US Carrier All on Its Own* *In a war game, of course.* In 2005, the USS Ronald Reagan met its match in the form of a single, diesel-powered Swedish submarine. During war games, the plucky submarine was able to sneak through the passive sonar defenses of the Ronald Reagan and its entire accompanying group to score a few precious torpedo hits, (virtually) sinking the cruiser and getting away without so much as a scratch. How? As Real Engineering explains, it's all thanks to a very old-school engine. Instead of using its die... more »

Maat – Ancient Egypt’s Most Important Religious Concept

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 22 hours ago
In the end we have a codified code of conduct applying to all throughout society. Any such code must compare favorably to any other such code unless you insist that the precepts of barbarism hold sway. Thus it is certain that this was in the background of Judaism and Christianity. Thus the contemplation of Maat had operated for at least 2000 years prior to our own religions. how this applied to paganism is another question. The nasty aspects of Baal come to mind, but there we remain mostly uninformed. This is well worth recalling when reading other bodies of scripture. *Maat ... more »
