Children trained to behead Western men... in Chicago

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 4 minutes ago
All of us have gotten used to the beheading of people in the Muslim world. Sadly, it was often the real people who were beheaded – such as Western visitors or this 12-year-old boy. Our ancestors enjoyed similar exercises some 700 years ago – and in some cases, much more recently. The Muslim world is still socially living in the Middle Ages so we shouldn't be surprised that certain practices look disturbing to us. Some two years ago, this culture has spread to a country that is much closer to us, Ukraine. Here, in Ivano-Frankivsk, Western Ukraine, people burn an effigy of Putin and c... more »

Russia, Trump and the 2016 election: What's the best way for Congress to investigate?

Jordan Tama, Assistant Professor of International Relations, American University School of International Service at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 55 minutes ago
Exactly how will the U.S. conduct a fair and accurate investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and links with President Donald Trump’s campaign? U.S. congressional leaders are discussing options. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said that the Senate intelligence committee is best suited to investigate any concerns related to Russia. Senator Lindsey Graham, a leading Republican voice on foreign policy, suggested Congress should establish a select, or special, committee of lawmakers to probe the matter. Euphrates (Tabqua) Dam, in Syria, at Risk of Failure- Oroville Dam Karma?

*This is one I’ve been following for a while now, but have been tardy in getting the news posted.* *Same scenario as Mosul Dam- the flooding of “biblical” proportions would cleanse the area of an Arab population the Kurds/US/Israel have no tolerance, no love, for. All the while ensuring rich rebuilding contracts.* *Any damage that may have occurred presently is most probably from coalition (US) airstrikes- The localized flooding may be due to US proxies “ISIS” terrorizing the locals which works out very well for the YPG/PKK. Winston Churchill was one of the most consequential leaders of the 20th century. Some months ago, I watched a movie about him that claimed that Churchill did many of the impressive things in order to prove to his father that he was no loser. It worked rather well because I don't have a clue who his father was. Aside from the successful resistance to the Third Reich, Churchill supervised the construction of the British radar and their nuclear program. His focus on science and technology in warfare was self-evident. As early as in 1931, he wrote a text estimating the amazing power hid... more »

Dov Waxman, Professor of Political Science, International Affairs and Israel Studies, Northeastern University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 1 day ago

Another 300,000 or so are living in East Jerusalem, which Israel has officially annexed. Driven by a powerful combination of religious nationalism, economic incentives and security concerns, the continued expansion of Israeli settlements is one of the main reasons so many seasoned observers of the conflict, myself includ... more »

*"A Warning To My Readers"* "Do not think me gentle because I speak in praise of gentleness, or elegant because I honor the grace that keeps this world. I am a man crude as any, gross of speech, intolerant, stubborn, angry, full of fits and furies. That I may have spoken well at times, is not natural. A wonder is what it is." - Wendell Berry

Penny at Penny for your thoughts - 1 day ago
*That's right readers!*It's the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about! It would be the most efficient, cost effective and best for the Syrian people*.*It is already a safe zone- UN peacekeepers are in the area and more can be deployed! Therefore displaced Syrians can be moved within Syria's territory, back to Golan and quite easily be resettled. The land is rich. Fertile soil. Water and natural resources are abundant. No burden for the EU. Canada. The US. The international community does NOT recognize Israel's claim on Syria's territorial land. Therefore the land claimed... more »
