Norwegian employers’ demands for a freeze on wages this year has been met by a corresponding call for an executive wage freeze by trade unions.

Norwegian colleges and universities are reporting an increased application rate from foreign students, as Norway has become the only country in Europe to continue offering tuition-free higher education to all, regardless of country of origin.

There has been some debate in Norway over proposals to finally impose tuition charges on students, not least to help fund needed expansion and improvements at university campuses around the country. Around 5,000 undergraduates were turned away last year because of space shortages.

Newspaper Aftenposten reported last fall that the Conservative Party is open to proposals calling for tuition charges of, for example, NOK 30,000 a year (USD 5,000, and modest by US standards), but Aasland rejected the idea. Her party prides itself on support for education, and no tuition will be imposed “as long as this government is sitting” she said.

Cuba welcomes new internet cable link with Venezuela
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12411845
The new connection will make download speeds 3,000 times faster - at least for the small minority of Cubans who have internet access.

It should also make international phone calls much cheaper.

The 1,600km (1,000 mile) cable from Venezuela was financed by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (Alba) - a left-wing regional grouping founded by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Cuban Information and Communications Minister Medardo Diaz said it "reinforced Cuba's sovereignty" and "opened a breach" in the US economic blockade.
Cuba's communist government has always blamed its poor communications links with the outside world on the decades-old US trade embargo, which has prevented the installation of a fibre optic cable to Florida, just 144km away.

The Winter of Our Political Discontent or How and Why You Only have TWO Choices, Two Parties

- Len Hart

A ‘progressive’ is a Democrat who does not want or dare to admit that he/she is a Democrat! This deplorable situation has resulted because a critical mass of ‘Dems’ committed what in politics is the unpardonable sin: they allowed the opposition [GOP] to define them!

Bottom line: ‘progressive’ does not mean a thing and will not result in a net gain of votes! The word owes is very existence to the fact that ‘liberals’ let the GOP get away with branding the word ‘liberal’. Liberal is a perfectly good word! It means FREE! Again –LIBERAL means free! Anyone who runs away from ‘freedom’ deserves to lose an election and until progressives regain the courage of their convictions, they will continue to get ‘ass whuppins’ at the hands of ruthless and well-financed right wing nuts!

Our Republican President

The Chamber of Commerce spent more than $32 million on campaign ads in 2010, 93% of which went toward Republican candidates. Since the Citizens United decision in January 2010, this is a perfectly legal way for corporations to dump money into the hands of the candidates they want to buy, without suffering any repercussions for exercising their “First Amendment rights.” They openly advocate for the outsourcing of jobs. And they do this all while maintaining an air of legitimacy that comes, in part, from their proximity to the White House.

Obama has done nothing but bend over backwards for businesses and large corporations when it comes to pushing policy. The stimulus bill passed early on in his presidency contained about $10 billion in tax cuts and incentives for businesses. If you believe that the renewal of the Bush tax cuts for the rich equals business owners investing more in the economy – which I don’t, but most Republicans do – then there’s another win.

Now, in a gesture eerily reminiscent of the speech he gave to the big bank CEOs after the passing of the financial reform bill, he has decided to bow down to the right again. While giving lip service to the plight of the American worker, his real message is clear: Republicans, I’m here for you; please tell me what I can do to make you happy.

U.S. Thanks and Encourages Spain to Prosecute Bush Officials

Center for Constitutional Rights have already submitted proof to the Spanish courts that our government is not taking action under international law and treaties

( Spain has been on this like a dog on a bone...and given up twice before I believe. Rick B. at Ten Percent put me onto one case. The reasons for those failures are deliberately not obvious. From the Topical Index for 'Law'  note

Rove and Wallenberg Are At Heart Of Assange Case

A federal grand jury in California is considering evidence against a group of activist hackers that supports the efforts of WikiLeaks to expose official wrongdoing by release of secret documents.
Anonymous Operation Want (AOW) was the target of a multi-state FBI raid on January 27, reports Bloomberg. The group has responded with a video that spotlights the role of GOP political strategist Karl Rove and the wealthy Wallenberg family of Sweden as key players in an effort to prosecute WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on sex-related charges in Europe.
