Most have heard about the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl (Ukraine) 24 years ago, but the second worst nuclear tragedy is not only buried in the past, away from the public eye, but it is also in use and continues to expand. The Belgian newspaper De Morgen explains why the secret factory at Mayak (Russia) should be in the frontline of public concern.
Horrible Mayak nuclear disaster: environmental holocaust in Urals
The nuclear plant discharged between 1948 and 1956 pushed back without hesitation and in great secrecy liquid radioactive waste into lakes and rivers
On September 29, 1957 a tank exploded with thousands of tons of liquid high level radioactive waste. Nearly half million people came into contact with radioactive substances but only 10,000 of them were evacuated.  23,000 square kilometers of land was contaminated and still is. The former Soviet Union knew of the disaster for years and concealed it from the outside world.
The Mayak nuclear plant has already processed 1540 tons of radioactive liquid from Germany, Finland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Czech Republic.
