“Uniquely Talented: Only the Democrats Could Have Lost to Trump”
*“Uniquely Talented: * *Only the Democrats Could Have Lost to Trump”* by Fred Reed "A great uproar goes forth from the enemies of the Trump Beast, with much gnashing of hair and pulling of teeth. He will be a terrible President, they say, and they may well be right. There are ominous signs, particularly as regards foreign policy, and he seems radically incoherent and contradictory. Interestingly, his critics have no slight idea why he won. The reason is obvious: He won because everybody was campaigning for him, in particular the media, Hillary, Black Lives Matter, Obama, Democrats,... more »

A Confederacy of Nationalist Dunces
Mussolini Being Cheered by The “Nationalist Italians”When the politicians run out of arguments for defending the policies that they have foisted on the country, they start ranting about the virtues of nationalism. Yet since 2010, Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners have largely remained unchanged: Once again, we had pork loin, mashed potatoes, Charlene's Cheesy Potatoes, Stovetop stuffing, our neighbor's sausage and water chestnut stuffing, butternut squash, corn, cranberry sauce and a good but inexpensive Spätlese white wine. Later on, a traditional pumpkin pie and whipped cream and maybe a shot of Bushmill's. What did you have at your house?

Israel fires 'trending'
It seems like only yesterday I was blogging about the BBC’s lack of interest in the Arabic-speaking media’s outpouring of antisemitic bile. Well, today there’s a breakthrough! Don’t get too excited though. It’s buried in an article about the fires currently raging in northern Israel. In the penultimate paragraph to be precise. “Meanwhile, the Arabic-language hashtag #Israel_on_fire began trending, with the majority of tweets expressing pleasure over the outbreak.” I was about to joke that it will be featured on BBC Trending soon. The joke’s on me. It is. The lighthearted, almost ... more »

After all, I’d spent over 40 years trying to teach students to be critical thinkers with well-tuned bullshit detectors, able to detect a bogus argument and counter it with solid evidence. I wasn’t alone; critical thinking is built into the B.C. curriculum, and no doubt the curricula of most American schools as well. In view of the recent controversy about the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Paul Driessen post I just recently put up called Pipeline Anarchy, I want to refer back to a post of mine in November 2011 called Democrat Socialism, Energy, and Pipeline Hysteria. One of the points I made was that the U.S. was already extensively filled with oil and gas pipelines. Fake News ‘Epidemic’ Turn Out To Be False
The recent furor around the prevalence of fake news on social media turns out to be based on fake news stories published by the mainstream media. This is all based on articles published by outlets such as Buzzfeed who suggest that fake news websites beat ‘real’ news by obtaining more ‘shares’ and ‘likes’ during the recent election cycle. There is an incredible theory that a Brexit won't actually happen
This particular issue remains open. Part of the problem is that so much is opinion rather than an accepted doctrine. Recall that over sixty percent of the electorate chose not to vote. Why? Was it not important to them? Pragmatically, the referendum was really a request to open negotiations however else it is described, because that is all that actually could be voted on. The same essentially holds true for the proposed breakup of a country. Thus the task revolves back to the electors to negotiate a exit. What it does not obviously do is provide carte blanch as to the terms... more »

Brains: Thinking About Zombie Apocalypse RPGs
I recently posted some of the games that are distracting me, causing one player to ask me "what about a zombie apocalypse?" So... What about a zombie apocalypse? Truthfully, I've never done an all-out zombie apocalypse game, though I have rather enjoyed liberal use of zombies in D&D games. I've actually always wanted to do such a game, though truthfully I find it a little bit on the intimidating side - while a one-shot zombie apocalypse game is pretty easy to do, the challenge is in keeping the campaign interesting. Obviously, game after game of killing zombies would get rather ... more »

Illogical Economic Ideas Lead To Political Disaster
The more the politicians rant on patriotism and nationalism, the higher becomes the disgust and anxiety of the few rational people. Is Fascism round the corner, or is it already here? How far will the insanity go before people realize that they are supporting illogical economic ideas which can only lead to a major social-political crisis?
So What's Wrong With Tulsi Gabbard? She Was For Bernie, After All
*Tulsi-- always palin' around with fascists* Collin Peterson, a Minnesota Blue Dog, is, arguably, the most reactionary Democrat in Congress. ProgressivePunch rates him an "F" and his lifetime crucial vote score is a mind-boggling 39.81. It's been even worse lately-- 35.95 in the current session, the 4th worst of any Democrat in the House. Trump won every single one of the 38 counties in Peterson's sprawling western Minnesota district., even the ones Obama won in 2012. Peterson, who had weak and under-funded opposition this cycle barely scraped by with 52.5% of the vote-- 173,571 to ... more »
MoW 2.0?
There is a lot of work to do post-earthquake, and political commentator and lifelong socialist Chris Trotter wants to get the red flag flying again by suggesting (by all accounts seriously) that the organisation famed for long lunchbreaks, sizeable cost overruns, and a lot of leaning on shovels be rebuilt, resurrected and let loose again on the unsuspecting taxpayer to do all (or at least a sizeable chunk) of that work. Mr Trotter has considerable expertise in the texts of Marx and Lenin and in the blowing around of windy rhetoric – but very little else, it must be said, and c... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
"The constellation of Orion is much more than three stars in a row. It is a direction in space that is rich with impressive nebulas. To better appreciate this well-known swath of sky, an extremely long exposure was taken over many clear nights in 2013 and 2014. After 212 hours of camera time and an additional year of processing, the featured 1400-exposure collage spanning over 40 times the angular diameter of the Moon emerged. *Click image for larger size.* Of the many interesting details that have become visible, one that particularly draws the eye is Barnard's Loop, the bright red c... more »
“Here’s The Real Story About Thanksgiving You’ve Never Heard”
*“Here’s The Real Story About Thanksgiving You’ve Never Heard”* Especially the parts about Squanto the "friendly Indian." by Nick Bauman “The Thanksgiving story you know probably goes a bit like this: English Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where they found a rich land full of animals and were greeted by a friendly Indian named Squanto, who taught them how to plant corn. The true story is more complicated. Once you learn about the real Squanto- also known as Tisquantum- you'll have a great yarn to tell your family over the Thanksgiving table. ... more »
Chet Raymo, "Matters of Life and Death"
*"Matters of Life and Death"* by Chet Raymo "For the past few days I've have passed this poor bedraggled creature on the sidewalk. I cannot help but think of that essay in Lewis Thomas' "The Lives of a Cell" called "Death In the Open." How rare it is, he writes, to see a dead wild animal. He mentions squirrels in particular. They teem in his backyard, he says, all year long, but he has never seen, anywhere, a dead squirrel. It is always a queer shock, part a sudden upwelling of grief, part unaccountable amazement. It is simply astounding to see a dead animal on the highway. The ou... more »
Are Russians Captivated By Trump?
*Fred Weir, CSM*: *Why Russians are so captivated by Trump* *HOW PEOPLE THINK Negative feelings toward the US are higher than at any time since scientific polling began in Russia in the mid-1980s. But many see the prospect for a turnaround.* MOSCOW — Nina Moreyeva, a Moscow pensioner, says she followed the recent US presidential election closely, and was totally behind Donald Trump. She says the main reason for that was simply the fear of war, and her hopes for more peaceful relations. "Hillary Clinton was always against Russia, even when she was speaking to domestic audiences," s... more »
How things have changed
It’s easy to forget how many things have changed so very much in so very few years. Those of you especially who have grown up with the internet might look askance at this story a friend plucked out from his archives this morning; a story from a London newspaper about my former West London footy club. It was considered “a “story because, wait for it, the club was connected to something called “the internet.” This, at the time, was considered impossibly exotic. Explains the unofficial archivist and former official webmaster: *Twenty one years ago today, we launched the third A... more »

Three Maps That Explains Why Europe Has Been 'Spooked' By The Recent Russian Deployment Of Missiles To Kaliningrad
*Washington Post:* *These maps show how Russia has Europe spooked* MOSCOW — The Kremlin has brushed off Western concerns about its deployment of cutting-edge missile systems in its Kaliningrad enclave, saying that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was the one disrupting the strategic balance with its plans to put antimissile defenses on Russia's borders. But the Russian arsenal on the Baltic, some of which has been tested in Syria, is potentially a game-changer. *Read more* .... *WNU Editor:* When the U.S. deployed missile defense systems in eastern Europe and made it clear ... more »
Global Warming To Reduce Wheat Yields (According To Models!)

ABSTRACT The potential impact of global temperature change on global crop yield has recently been assessed with different methods. Here we show that grid-based and point-based simulations and statistical regressions (from historic records), without deliberate adaptation or CO2 fertilization effects, […]
Quote of the Day: On ‘economic migrants’
*“When poor people from poor countries try to enter rich countries, critics often deride them by saying, ‘Those aren't political refugees; they're only economic migrants trying to get out of poverty.’ “We should ask ourselves WHY those countries are still mired in poverty, instead of having risen from poverty to wealth like Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. It's because the governments of those poor countries are kleptocracies that loot entrepreneurs and thereby pre-emptively discourage investment. Any ‘economic migrant’ trying to escape from the government-maintai... more »
Wellington post-quake visit
[image: IMG_0285]Yesterday I was out and about looking at damaged buildings around central Wellington to help understand why they were damaged. (This is what designers do.) As you can see, there are three main clusters of damage: on fill at the waterfront and Te Aro flat, and above Waterloo Quay in Thorndon: Several things struck me (observations rather falling masonry, fortunately): - [image: Deloittes-23.11.16]Perhaps the greatest thing to notice is not so much that so many buildings were damaged, but that so few weren’t! Around 60 buildings are on the official... more »

Ancient Spirit Rising
Life in 2100 will look very different from today. Industrial civilization is addicted to the mass consumption of nonrenewable resources, a design that can have no long-term future. To add to the excitement, climate change is a powerful wildcard. How did we get into this mess? Many too-clever mistakes. Are the problems widely understood now? No, most know little or nothing about ecological sustainability. We need to learn. It’s also important to care about the living world, to be outraged by the destruction, to fight for change. The Poet: Czeslaw Milosz, "Hope"
*"Hope"* "Hope is with you when you believe The earth is not a dream but living flesh, That sight, touch, and hearing do not lie, That all things you have ever seen here Are like a garden looked at from a gate. You cannot enter. But you're sure it's there. Could we but look more clearly and wisely We might discover somewhere in the garden A strange new flower and an unnamed star. Some people say we should not trust our eyes, That there is nothing, just a seeming, These are the ones who have no hope. They think that the moment we turn away, The world, behind our backs, ceases to exist, As ... more »
