New York is not alone in its reaction to the stunning and appalling victory of Herr Trumpf and what evil it could visit on America. As with all tragedies, people have now entered a period of working through their grieving into a mood of not resignation but resolve and meeting the challenges. If Trump holds to the type of politician indicated by his campaign rhetoric and promises, his administration ... more »

Chaos In India As The Country's ATMs Run Out Of Money

*Reuters*: *Anger grows in India as banks struggle to swap banned notes* Anger intensified in India on Saturday as banks struggled to dispense cash following the government's decision to withdraw large denomination notes in an attempt to uncover billions of dollars in undeclared wealth. Tempers frayed as hundreds of thousands of people queued for hours outside banks for a third day to swap 500 and 1,000 rupee bank notes after the notes were abolished earlier in the week. The banned bills made up more than 80 percent of the currency in circulation, leaving millions of people withou... more »

Winning the popular vote - the BBC propagandising a useful myth

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 10 hours ago
The BBC is cheerfully propagating the myth that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote and thus should be the next US President. This is wrong for at least three reasons: First because the electoral college method is well understood and the method used in the USA for Presidential Elections. Second because the number of votes counted is not the same as the number of votes cast. This is because some states stop counting votes once the result would no longer be affected by the remaining uncounted votes. Third because there are still a lot of uncounted absentee ballots. *"Language is a virus,"* proclaimed performance artist Lauri Anderson in the 1980s. In Arrival's case, the viral-language is the mostly-symbolic squid-ink circle-script of an octopus-like alien species that looks like smooth-Cthulhu pouring from the roiling mists of ancient Earth history. You're right, I used a lot of imagery there but Hollywood's Satan-worshipping prance is never that easily exorcised. Satan, how is that fair? Looking at the 'alchemical' image above, you'll see that it's an inverted seven-star. This is how the seven-fingered 'hands' of the seven-legged 'heptopod... more »

Pollsters Missed the Call by Failing to Spot Trump's Support Among White Voters

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
It has taken me years, but i now truly appreciate the wisdom of the electoral college. The Trump campaign did not have a fraction of the money needed to turn out the whole popular vote in order to compete with Hilary. Thus we had a two to three percent loss in secure republican states. This allowed Hilary to actually win the popular vote, although by a very small edge. It was actually around 200,000 votes which is the margin in a small base. What the electoral college system does is replace the parliamentary system without restraining its electors in congress.... more »

Spiritual Use of Cannabis

It is obvious that cannabis needs to be fully reintegrated with both our spiritual culture and our medicine. The best practice should be in the form of a drink. A deep article well worth reading. I usually take a long perspective and accept that cycles of opinion sway back and forth over generations. The contradictions of recent modernity have been costing us in many subtle ways. These issues are coming to a head and must be washed clean. i accept that they will be washed away. In the future abortion will be deeply regulated and arranged marriage supported as a clear adjunct to our social environment. Doing both right will be particularly challenging. Many other social issues must also be tackled and that include pedophilia. Crim... more »

Verlinde's de Sitter MOND is highly incomplete, to say the least

*The Dutch media brutally overhype a generic speculative idea* Five independent Dutchmen have contacted me and told me that the Dutch media are obsessed with a new preprint by Erik Verlinde. Verlinde's fame among the inkspillers has already beaten Einstein's by an order of magnitude. (The echoes in the English-speaking media are so far a tiny fraction of the Dutch coverage.) Congratulations To Hillary Clinton For Winning the 2016 Election

Marc McDonald at BeggarsCanBeChoosers.com - 23 hours ago
*By MARC McDONALD* At long last, the ugly, bitter 2016 presidential election campaign is over. And we'd like to extend our congratulations to Hillary Clinton, the winner of the election. After a hard-fought campaign, she prevailed over Donald Trump, getting nearly 400,000 more votes than her challenger. The American people have spoken. Unfortunately, the Electoral College has also spoken. And this archaic, bizarre relic from the 18th century is going to overrule the will of the people. Of course, the Electoral College did the same thing in 2000. And we all saw how that turned out: ... more »
