Experimental method’s most famous experiment finally proven experimentally
If science built the modern world – specifically, if the scientific *attitude* towards knowledge built the modern world – and there is much evidence to say that it did -- then it really did all begin with Galileo. Because it was with *him* that the experimental method really began. For millennia armchair philosophers had just sat around and *debated* whether objects of different mass would fall at different rates – whether, when dropped from a height, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers would land first. For centuries, the armchair theorists had sat back and argued and had c... more »
Can The Democrats Win Key Governorships In 2018 And Halt GOP Gerrymandering?
As we've mentioned, a week after the election, the Democrats had better get serious about preventing Republican dominance of Congress through gerrymandering. That means investing in state legislative races in states where Democrats have a chance at breaking up GOP trifectas-- there are 24 of them-- where they can gerrymander to their hearts content. The Democrats broke the Republican trifecta in Nevada and now control both houses, although the check on what *they* can do is a Republican governor. Democrats also flipped New Mexico's and Alaska's state houses but lost control of the... more »
The Money Game: Going Digital for Social Control
When I was leaving the Newark, New Jersey airport for India on November 15 I tried to exchange American money for Indian rupees. I was told by the money changing station that they were not at the present handling any Indian rupees. This was when I first heard about the Indian governments controversial 'demonetization' campaign. When I arrived at the Delhi international airport I got in the long line at the money changing station and discovered that foreigners could only exchange $100 worth of currency for rupees. Indian cash is in short supply. ATM machines were out of cash. ... more »

[image: DSC03660] A Taiwanese-American friend, longtime Taiwan activist, entrepreneur, and one of the coolest people I know, has this to say about "coming home" on Facebook... I've been meaning to one day write a detailed essay and openly about how difficult it is to build closer relations between Taiwanese diaspora and local Taiwanese or even first generation Taiwanese diaspora. But if I write with specific examples, then it'll be calling people out which I'm not wishing to do at the moment so I'll just generalize. In addition are my gripes about a new class of diaspora that have c... more »

Nick Leggett’s “defection” surprisingly revealing
In that Labour’s Nick Leggett’s decision to become ex-Labour – and worse, to join the Blue Team! – is so unimportant, it’s important. It’s not so much a defection as a jump aboard one train as his former one was leaving him. *He said he grew up "with Labour burned deep into my DNA" and both sides of his family were supporters. But the party's activists, staffers and MPs had become distant from the party's voting base. *“Out Of The Silence”* by Chet Raymo "A few words about Douglas Christe's “The Blue Sapphire of the Mind: Notes for a Contemplative Ecology”, the title of which is drawn from the 4th-century monastic writer Evagrius of Pontus: "When the mind has put off the old self and shall put on the one born of grace, then it will see its own state in the time of prayer resembling sapphire or the color of heaven." The Big Question: Will The Democrats Stand Up To Trumpism?
The fascist cadres surrounding Trump-- from politicians like Mike Pence, Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions to predatory billionaires like Betsy DeVos, Steve Mnuchin, Robert Mercer, the Kochs and Wilbur Ross-- are attacking the American core on so many fronts that its unimaginable that congressional Democrats-- led in the Senate by a severely compromised Chuck Schumer and in the House by a gaggle of feeble, tired, sclerotic hacks-- will even begin to know how to resist. Can they filibuster the worst of his appointees? Would that lead to the Republicans doing away with the filibuster, ... more »

Are the BBC factually correct here?
This BBC report http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38152765 contains these two paragraphs: 'Mr Trump has vowed as president to institute an "extreme vetting" programme to limit immigration to the US from countries that are believed to be at a heightened risk of terrorism. He had previously called for a "total and complete shutdown" on Muslim immigration to the US.' Is that last sentence 100% accurate or deliberately misleading?
The SNP's Blather About Blair
Tony Blair's politics are awful. But, after a 2.6 million word consideration of his conduct in the lead up to the Iraq War, I'm confident in the belief he's not a war criminal. However, some disagree and remain bent on bringing him to justice. The latest episode in this long-running drama was the motion put to the Commons earlier today by the SNP demanding yet another investigation. This was hung on the infamous note passed to George W Bush (relieved he won't now go down as the worst president in US history) saying "we will be with you, whatever". LOSERS: How we liberals became such losers!
*WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2016Part 3—Maddow and Krugman explain:* How did we liberals get to be such manifest, world-class losers? We just lost a White House race to the craziest person who ever sought the office. This outcome will change history for generations. What forces conspired to make us such consummate losers? You're asking a very good question! For today, let's consider the work of two influential journalists. We refer to Rachel Maddow, a consummate corporate "cable news" clown, and to Paul Krugman, the most important American journalist of the past sixteen years. Let's ... more »

Islamic State group claims Ohio State University rampage per BBC News who miss a key fact
This BBC report http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38151669 includes analysis from Gordon Corera that omits the news that the perpetrator of the Ohio attack said this: "By Allah, we will not let you sleep unless you give peace to the Muslims. You will not celebrate or enjoy any holiday," he wrote before the attack. "Btw, every single Muslim who disapproves of my actions is a sleeper cell, waiting for a signal. I am warning you Oh America." Presumably this attack is still 'nothing to do with Islam' so far as the BBC are concerned.

Is The Big Government Rational Or Irrational?
The big government’s actions are not necessarily irrational. Irrational actions are those in which the entity in some way defeats its own purpose, doing what is calculated to frustrate its ends. But if the big government’s policies enable it to usurp several new powers and eviscerate the political opposition then it is not frustrating its own ends. There is, in most cases, a carefully designed strategy behind what may seem like irrational and destructive policies of the big government. There is a method behind what may seem like madness. A big government is a government that has me... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
“Why is there a bridge between these two spiral galaxies? Made of gas and stars, the bridge provides strong evidence that these two immense star systems have passed close to each other and experienced violent tides induced by mutual gravity. Known together as Arp 240 but individually as NGC 5257 and NGC 5258, computer modelling and the ages of star clusters indicate that the two galaxies completed a first passage near each other only about 250 million years ago. *Click image for larger size.* Gravitational tides not only pulled away matter, they compress gas and so caused star forma... more »
The Poet: Grace Schulman, “Blessed Is The Light”
*“Blessed Is The Light”* “Blessed is the light that turns to fire, and blessed the flames that fire makes of what is burns. Blessed the inexhaustible sun, for it feeds the moon that shines but does not burn. Praised be hot vapors in earth's crust, for they force up mountains that explode as molten rock and cool like love remembered. Holy is the sun that strikes sea, for surely as water burns life and death are one. Holy the sun, maker of change, for it melts ice into water that bruises mountains, honing peaks and carving gullies. Sacred is the mountain that promises permanence but chan... more »
Chet Raymo, “Take My Arm”
*“Take My Arm”* by Chet Raymo “I'm sure I have referenced here before the poems of Grace Schulman, she who in inhabits that sweet melancholy place between "the necessity and impossibility of belief." Between, too, the necessity and impossibility of love. Belief and love. They have so much in common, yet are as distinct as self and other. How strange that two people can hitch their lives together, on a whim, say, or wild intuition, knowing little if nothing about the other's hiddenness, about things that even the other does not fully understand and couldn’t articulate even if he di... more »
Tecumseh, "Live Your Life..."
"Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place. Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of liv... more »
"A Look to the Human Spirit"
"What are these humans doing? Dancing. Many humans on Earth exhibit periods of happiness, and one method of displaying happiness is dancing. Happiness and dancing transcend political boundaries and occur in practically every human society. Above, Matt Harding traveled through many nations on Earth, started dancing, and filmed the result. The video is perhaps a dramatic example that humans from all over planet Earth feel a common bond as part of a single species. Happiness is frequently contagious - few people are able to watch the above video without smiling." - http://apod.nasa.gov... more »
Kinder Morgan pipeline spill in Burnaby 2007
A 10-meter geyser of crude oil spewed from a broken Kinder Morgan pipeline in a Burnaby neighbourhood in July 2007. Eight homes were flooded and 92 were put on evacuation notice. Part of the TransMountain Pipeline system, the broken pipeline was carrying crude oil from a pipeline terminal at the foot of Burnaby Mountain to a tanker-loading facility on Burrard Inlet. After four years in court, Kinder Morgan pled guilty. Justin Trudeau's new Kinder Morgan pipeline will ship 900,000 barrels of dilbit a day from Alberta through the same neighbourhood to the supertankers waiting in Bu... more »
Standing Rock: Do Something to Help
The police in North Dakota are now threatening to go in and destroy the water protectors camp at Standing Rock. Large numbers of veterans from around the country are presently making their way to Standing Rock to stand alongside the people. It will be interesting to see how the police deal with that. In the meantime you can make a phone call to defend the native people. Erdogan Admits Turkey’s Incursion Into Syria Is To Oust Assad
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has admitted that the reason Turkish troops are inside Syria is to oust the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad. He said “We entered [Syria] to end the rule of the tyrant al-Assad who terrorizes with state terror. We didn’t enter for any other reason,” according to the Hurriyet daily news. Turkish troops entered Syria in August, launching operation Euphrates Shield. Ground troops and air power were deployed to northern parts of the country, with the stated goal of retaking areas held by ISIS. The operation has been widely criticized both by the Syrian K... more »
Castro’s Dead: Here’s What His Tombstone Should Say…
*Fidel Castro, as you certainly know by now, is dead. And, says Chris Campbell in this guest post, there are some things that really must be inscribed on his tombstone.* ------------------------------ Although we’re not ones to engage in schadenfreude or death celebration, we certainly won’t act like Fidel Castro was some kind of hero. But that’s just us. The US Green Party’s Jill Stein, who just won the lottery (what is it? $7 million now?) by tricking people into funding her “recount” (and, surprise, missing the Pennsylvania filing date), tweeted this about Castro: “Fidel... more »
A Welcome Incursion
As I'm pretty sure I mentioned in a previous post, during my last trip down to Calgary I picked up a new camera so hopefully we will now see some improvements in picture quality. It's much easier to do some posts about my birding excursions when I have a half-decent camera to use. (I've actually started to give some thought to starting another blog devoted just to birding, but we shall see.) Ironically, now that I have a new camera I haven't really been able to use it all that much, partly because we are seriously lacking in sunlight here with the sun setting just before 4pm and... more »

Queen Elizabeth Threatens The Crown Over ‘Murdered’ Princess Diana Script
Netflix drama The Crown is set to reveal the truth about the late Princess Diana’s death, and production insiders reveal that Queen Elizabeth and Buckingham Palace are on the warpath. The warts-and-all series has been praised for its intimate, realistic portrayal of the Queen Elizabeth’s early years. Though the first season of The Crown portrayed the young Queen in a sympathetic light, future episodes of the script have raised alarms in Buckingham Palace and senior palace staff have objected to the way scandals will be presented to the public. Palace advisors demanded to see spec ... more »

The Poet: David Whyte, "The Opening of Eyes"
*"The Opening of Eyes"* "That day I saw beneath dark clouds The passing light over the water, And I heard the voice of the world speak out. I knew then as I have before, Life is no passing memory of what has been, Nor the remaining pages of a great book Waiting to be read. It is the opening of eyes long closed. It is the vision of far off things, Seen for the silence they hold. It is the heart after years of secret conversing Speaking out loud in the clear air. “The Mirroring World: We Are Like Nature”
*“The Mirroring World: We Are Like Nature”* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOm “As humans our lives are completely intertwined with the cycles and rhythms of nature. Nature is a mirror, inspiring and teaching us, deepening our sense of belonging in the world. Wherever you look, you can see that our patterns and the patterns of the natural world are the same. You can find this resonance in every form, from molecules to plants and animals and to planets. "Butterflies..."
"I think humans might be like butterflies; people die every day without many other people knowing about them, seeing their colors, hearing their stories... and when humans are broken, they're like broken butterfly wings; suddenly there are so many beauties that are seen in different ways, so many thoughts and visions and possibilities that form, which couldn't form when the person wasn't broken! So it is not a very sad thing to be broken, after all! It's during the times of being broken, that you have all the opportunities to become things unforgettable! Just like the broken butter... more »
How To Defeat Trump Every Single Day
What did Trump voters-- his potential victims-- enable on Nov. 8? In their mad dash to get even with the hated establishment, they unleashed something much worse. First I want to point out an OpEd by over 100 Jewish historians from universities all over America in last week's *Jewish Journal*. "As scholars of Jewish history," they wrote, "we are acutely attuned to the fragility of democracies and the consequences for minorities when democracies fail to live up to their highest principles... Hostility to immigrants and refugees strikes particularly close to home for us as historian... more »
All major parties agree we must fix the housing crisis. Latest figures show we're still not even trying
There is one thing that all major parties are, and have always been, in unanimous agreement on. Fixing the never-ending housing crisis. The benefits would cascade into other big vote winners. Take these three. Sensible house prices leave more money in everyone's pockets to boost the rest of the economy. Being low paid will hurt less. And a major house building programme away from London and

Trump hack explains what a landslide is!
*TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2016This shit is allowed on the air:* To what extent has our journalistic and intellectual culture hit rock bottom? Check that: To what extent has our culture been *allowed* to hit rock bottom? To what extent has our journalistic culture ceased to exist? For a thought-provoking example, consider the "discussion" which aired last night on CNN. Don Lemon was asking one of his network's stable of Trump hacks to answer a basic question. Why in the world is Donald J. Trump saying he won a "landslide?" He actually *lost* the popular vote, and the electoral vote wa... more »
