Dumping of Highly Contaminated Water at Fukushima Daiichi

TEPCO is also facing severe problems filtering and storing the contaminated water it does pump out from the ground and ruined buildings. In May of 2013 The Asahi Shimbun reported the TEPCO was going to begin dumping groundwater at the Daiichi site because its storage capacities for contaminated water were nearly exhausted. There was considerable resistance from local fisherman because TEPCO lacked the capacity to remove Strontium-90 from captured water. At that time, TEPCO reported that filtered water measured 710 million Becquerels per liter while unfiltered water was reported...more »

Sexual violence and harassment are "rooted in misogyny," Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said Friday as she unveiled a plan she said was aimed at changing behaviours and challenging social norms. This is a really interesting report over at Lon's blog. Whatever this creature is, it is been identified easily as an hyena. Better there is history related to such sightings, so it is not a recent escape either. I have shown you the African version. Obviously, it is: Not a dog Not a primate. Not a bear. Not a cat either. And it is also not a hyena either. This is our Giant sloth. The super strong rear legs do not conform to that of a hyena nor does the imbalance in leg length observed. ... more »

Star Buzzed Earth During Neanderthal Times

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
[image: Picture of Scholz's star and its brown dwarf companion (foreground) during its fly-by of the solar system 70,000 years ago] This is the first confirmed close encounter star actually detected. Since we have a cultural story that this all happened, it immediately makes one wonder if a cultural story successfully passed down through time to the present telling of just this star. Seventy thousand years seems to make this impossible. Thus there are likely more such objects and the real search is now on. At least we have one and it fits appropriate time frames... more »

Oil Rig Worker Saw MH370 Fire

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
This report is actually useful although i think he did not see the crash so much as the initial events around this disaster. The plane had a fire ignite in the cargo space and this obviously broke through the fuselage and lit up the sky. At the same time the pilot took the plane up to 45,000 feet in an attempt to snuff the flames and then triggered the auto pilot to bring it down to 23,000 feet. Our worker over the horizon saw this action and the event then dropped below the horizon. This is easily interpreted as a crash in motion. What he did not see was the burning plane ... more »

5 Super Powers of Bamboo Charcoal You Need to Know

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
[image: image] Working with lumber bamboo, you soon become a big fan. I personally grew a patch from a small root bunch provided by a friend and soon learned to respect it. It is certain to become part of the tool kit of every farming community worldwide. Once established, you must fend of rodents who like the young shoots but that is merely a case of using chicken wire and its like. After it has added a couple of feet there is no real cause to worry. It can be used for feed, construction, charcoal making and everything in between. Better yet, one can quickly cut masses of it do... more »

Assyria, Israel, and new Greek blackmail

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 21 hours ago
A few comments on three political stories. *The destruction of the Assyrian culture has accelerated.* These Allah's savages replaced sledgehammers with bulldozers as they are liquidating an Assyrian jewel of a town, Nimrud. UNESCO talks about war crimes. Czech archaeologists are shocked and say that by its intensity, this destruction is unprecedented even though the very concept of "liquidation of other nations' cultures" isn't a new concept in the history of the mankind. However, one of them talked about a silver lining: Nimrud has lots of heritage beneath the ground and it is not ... more »

Business 360 24: Electricity and Development

* This is my article for the March 2015 issue of Business 360, a monthly magazine published in Kathmandu, Nepal. ---------- *Electricity and Development* When I was in Nepal for one week in January this year, the lack of electricity was among the most prominent issues that I observed. Many road intersections have no stoplights, all hotels have generator sets, many streets are dark at night, and so on. The business potentials of Nepal are huge, with its unique geography and mountains tourism, and its young and big population. The need for more stable supply of electricity ... more »

Everyone Knows Israel Has the Bomb

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 23 hours ago
*The Speech* By Uri Avnery (Israel) SUDDENLY IT reminded me of something. I was watching The Speech by Binyamin Netanyahu before the Congress of the United States. Row upon row of men in suits (and the occasional woman), jumping up and down, up and down, applauding wildly, shouting approval. It was the shouting that did it. Where had I heard that before? And then it came back to me. It was another parliament in the mid-1930s. The Leader was speaking. Rows upon rows of Reichstag members were listening raptly. Every few minutes they jumped up and shouted their approval. Of course,... more »

Pakistan Asks A Weak Afghanistan To Share Power With A Confident Taliban, Who Have Taken New Hope From The Rise of ISIL Across The Region

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 23 hours ago
*Kabul can be taken just as easily as Mosul was because the US-trained Afghan army, like the US-trained Iraqi army, is corrupt and demoralized. They have more money and weapons than they know what to do with. What they're missing are the fundamentals like belief and will, which the Taliban, ISIL, and Shiite militias have in plenty.* *An excerpt from, "$65 Billion Later, U.S. Hands the Reins to a Weak Afghan Army" by Brianna Ehley, The Fiscal Times, March 4, 2015:* A *new report* from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) contains information that the ... more »

“What Is Synchronicity?”

*“What Is Synchronicity?”* by Zen Gardner "First of all, the mystical synchronicity mechanism *just is*. It’s a manifestation of the great conscious Universal Truth that underlies and drives everything with or without our conscious recognition of it. To me it distills down to neophyte mankind uncovering clearly connecting events that supersede our mental understandings. And when we do it serves as an inspiration and continual wake up call. To the ancients this was natural. Here’s some interesting quotes from “The Art of Being Present”: "Synchronicity – the unexpected merging of two... more »

"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth, more than ruin, more even than death....Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man." - Bertrand Russell

In 2006 Newsweek thought George W Bush's use of the word Caliphate was humorous

' When Ahmed heard "caliphate" Wednesday morning, he thought of the way Bush used the word "crusade" after September 11. "There's a fundamental misunderstanding with the president and his advisers on core Islamic issues," Ahmed said. "He's getting bad advice, they're misinformed on Islamic terminology." Either that, or he's making a strategic rhetorical choice.' More here http://www.newsweek.com/bushs-new-word-caliphate-111461
