CMS: a 2.9-sigma WH hint

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 2 minutes ago
Unfortunately, due to a short circuit somewhere at the LHC, a small metallic piece will have to be removed – which takes a week – and the 2015 LHC physics run may be postponed by up to 5 weeks because of that. Meanwhile, ATLAS and CMS have flooded their web pages with new papers resulting from the 2012 run. In most of these papers, the Standard Model gets an "A". It is not really the case of the CMS' note Search for massive \(WH\) resonances decaying to \(\ell\nu b\bar b\) final state in the boosted regime at \(\sqrt{s}=8\TeV\) because a local 2.9-sigma excess is seen in the muo... more »

Self-infantalising students now finding ideas too scary

It’s the very opposite of what a university is supposed to be about. Rather than being forums for free expression and the free and open exchange of ideas, a *New York Times* article suggests universities are now “encouraging ‘safe spaces’ to protect delicate sensibilities.” Rather than going to college to meet, understand and engage with scary ideas, it says, too many of today’s undergraduates insist on hiding from them – and wanting them to be made to go away. Michael Snyder The move to a cashless society won’t happen overnight. Instead, it is being implemented very slowly and systematically in a series of incremental steps. All over the planet, for security reasons, governments are starting to place restrictions on the use of cash. As citizens, we are being told that this is being done to thwart criminals, terrorists, drug runners, money launderers and tax evaders. Other forms of payment are much easier for governments to track, and so they very much prefer them. But we are rapidly getting to the point where the use of cash is con... more »

*“Ignorance Is Bliss”* by Michael Brenner “Factual information is out of fashion. American society now devalues it. Subjective attitude and opinion are considered to be as worthy as accurate renderings of reality. Many wear their ignorance as a badge of honor. The ultimate freedom for them is to avoid needless bother in knowing the truth and distinguishing it from falsity. Some of this behavior is calculated and intentional; much of it is blind indulgence of convenience and prejudice. These behaviors are commonplace among our officials, politicians, commentariat, and the citizenry... more »

Public Opinion Shift on C-51 Shows Importance of Parliamentary Debate

thwap at thwap's schoolyard - 19 hours ago
I've just been thinking over the past couple of days about how the declining public support for harper's totalitarian police-state Bill C-51 as a result of greater information about it, shows the importance of democratic debate. (Forgive me if that sentence is incoherent. My eyes are blurry with sleep and I'm still on my first coffee.) The point is, democratic discussion, hearing from experts, etc., is what Parliament is all about. We become informed through our representatives. (And, when I have gone and read debates online at the Parliamentary website, I'm often impressed by the ... more »

Nice headline but it is only another confirmation that gravity will bend light. Yet it is also an excellent example of the nature of our Space Time geometry. Yet the mathematics is centered on a 'metric' acting as a given. Until my paper, the only metric we had was the slightly time axis extended metric of Euclidean Geometry. It is noteworthy that my own work has no reason to similarly time extend my metr... more »

Last week 60 Minutes ran a feature called Women in Combat: Cracking the Last All-Male Bastion of the US Military. The segment, led by David Martin, focused on Marine Infantry Officer training. Is The Middle East Now Facing A Period Of Nuclear Proliferation?

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
*Karl Vick, Time*: *The Middle East Nuclear Race Is Already Underway* *While the U.S. and other world powers work to constrain Iran's nuclear program, five rival nations plan atomic programs* *One of the most important reasons why the U.S. is trying to conclude a nuclear deal with Iran is to prevent an Iranian bomb from triggering a nuclear race in the Middle East. Yet even as talks continue now in Switzerland, Tehran’s regional rivals have already begun quietly acting on their own atomic ambitions. Nuclear power may be on the wane almost everywhere else in the world, but it’s all... more »

Doing What U.S. Does Best - Don't Dare Throw Eggs at Them

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
A convoy of US Army military vehicles arrived in Riga, Sunday as part of a 1,770-km (1,100-mile) tour through six European countries. The convoy is making its way through Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Germany, before reaching its final destination near the German town of Vilseck. Czech people were told not to throw tomatoes and eggs at a US military convoy rumbling through Eastern Europe, the local media said, citing the laws of the land. Those in love with egg & tomato hurling may get up to three years if convicted. “Should anyone emerge with the int... more »

"The Crab Nebula is cataloged as M1, the first object on Charles Messier's famous 18th century list of things which are not comets. In fact, the Crab is now known to be a supernova remnant, debris from the death explosion of a massive star, witnessed by astronomers in the year 1054. This sharp, ground-based telescopic view uses narrowband data to track emission from ionized oxygen and hydrogen atoms (in blue and red) and explore the tangled filaments within the still expanding cloud. *Click image for larger size.* One of the most exotic objects known to modern astronomers, the Crab ...more »

"When We Have Time..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
“How small a portion of our life it is that we really enjoy. In youth we are looking forward to things that are to come; in old age, we are looking backwards to things that are gone past; in manhood, although we appear indeed to be more occupied in things that are present, yet even that is too often absorbed in vague determinations to be vastly happy on some future day, when we have time.” - Charles Caleb Colton, “Lacon”

Chet Raymo, “Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright...”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
*“Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright...”* by Chet Raymo “Divinity is not playful. The universe was not made in jest but in solemn incomprehensible earnest. By a power that is unfathomably secret, and holy, and fleet." You may recall these words from Annie Dillard's “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.” There is nothing intrinsically cheerful about the world, she says. To live is to die; it's all part of the bargain. Stars destroy themselves to make the atoms of our bodies. Every creature lives to eat and be eaten. And into this incomprehensible, unfathomable, apparently stochastic melee stumbles... ... more »

RINF, Countercurrents, Global Research, Counterpunch, Information Clearing House (all links are in italics) Some £600 million in UK aid money courtesy of the taxpayer is helping big business increase its profits in Africa via the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition. In return for receiving aid money and corporate investment, African countries have to change their laws, making it easier for corporations to acquire farmland, control seed supplies and export produce. Last year, Director of the Global Justice Now Nick Dearden said: “It’s scandalous that UK aid money is being... more »

Why Dave Has Ruled Out a Third Term

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 1 day ago
How short are political memories? Being someone with stints in Leninist organisations behind me, one lesson I talk from those times was how the party styled itself as the collective memory of the class. Hence why the repetitious lead offs on the Russian Revolution and rinse and repeat articles on the old beards. However, it turns out those comrades were right. In the Labour Party, as a rule, there is little sense of shared histories. Policies that were tried and failed before make comebacks from time to time. There is little systematic education and therefore the lessons learned by... more »

Ted Cruz Wants To Be The First President Of The U.S. Who Is Not A Natural Born Citizen

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Although Ted Cruz's father is a deranged fascist and extremist, it would be simplistic to dismiss the Texas senator as just another scion of a right-wing family displaced by the Cuban Revolution. In fact, when Cruz talks about his dad having fought in the Cuban Revolution and having been jailed and tortured, he is certainly *implying* that his father was a victim of Castro and the socialist revolutionaries. In reality, though, Rafael Cruz was fighting alongside Castro and was captured by the fascist forces of the brutal Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, who was backed by the U.S. ... more »

Waiting through dry spells to set out transplants in wet spells; waiting through wet spells to paint and mow. The potted seedlings are growing slowly this year in spite of their heat and sun lamps. It takes eighteen flats of seedlings to fill the three spring-garden beds. I choose three at a time. I know I'm rushing it, but there has been so little frost that one wants to *try*. I'm afraid the heat will come suddenly and the spring things will want to bolt. The green stripe you can see down the middle of each bed is broadbeans, the best eating size of favas.
