Review - Boom, Bust, Boom: A Story About Copper, the Metal That Runs the World by Bill Carter

Small Footprints at Reduce Footprints - 25 minutes ago
At one time, I lived in Arizona. On weekends, wanting to get to know our new home, we explored the state. On one particular trip, as we wound down a mountain road, we came upon a fenced area with tons of warning signs. Do not enter, Danger, No Trespassing signs were huge and placed everywhere. The ones with a scull and crossbones made me shiver! We wondered what we had stumbled upon ... and whether we were someplace where we shouldn't be. I checked the map to be sure that we hadn't wandered off our course and determined that we were on the right road. Still ... it was rather creepy.... more »

Secretive Senate Committee Rubber Stamps CISA Cybersecurity Bill

There is an acronym that is very descriptive of life in Obamastan and that is BOHICA which stands for Bend Over Here It Comes Again. Booker on anti-India bias at the BBC

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 10 hours ago
I've been holding off all day about posting about Christopher Booker's hard-hitting *Sunday Telegraph *piece, *Why to blacken India on rape do they have to omit the facts?*. It savages the BBC over its controversial documentary about rape in India - a documentary India's courts have banned. I have to say that, up till reading Mr B's piece, I'd been entirely siding with the BBC against the Indian government over this. The BBC seemed, from all the (extensive) coverage I've been reading (and hearing), to be on the right side of the argument. However, as I now know that others are i... more »

Isn't it frustrating when you *know* you're doing something that hurts you, that makes your life more difficult, yet you can't seem to stop? Awareness is a necessary precursor to change - that's been proven to me again and again - but sometimes awareness becomes another burden. I'm in one of those times of my life when my level of busy-ness is well past my comfort level, and there's nothing I can do about it. Although it's not quite short-term, it's not permanent. I've gotten through this before - and I've done it without re-triggering any stress-related symptoms or illness. In som... more »

There's a 'breaking news' story at the moment about Rotherham Labour MP Sarah Champion claiming, on parliamentary expenses, the cost of a poppy wreath for Remembrance Day - something which will obviously offend many people, and that inevitably harks back to the parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009. Sarah Champion was one of the stars of the recent landmark BBC documentary, *Inside the Commons*. LIMA 2015: MBDA pushes Sea Venom and CAMM

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 18 hours ago
[image: Sea Venom]The Malaysian Armed Forces currently field a number of MBDA weapon systems and, based on these previous successes, the European missile house is exhibiting a range of weapons at LIMA 2015. Among them is the Sea Venom anti-ship missile and Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) air defence system. MBDA believes the Sea Venom, formerly known as the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon (FASGW), is an ideal replacement for Sea Skua anti-ship missiles already serving on Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) AgustaWestland Super Lynx helicopters. Littoral ship makes presence felt in Northeast Asia

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 18 hours ago
[image: USS Fort Worth (LCS 3)]The USS Fort Worth’s participation in a bilateral exercise with South Korea this past week begins what the Navy envisions will be regular visits by faster, shallow-draft ships to Northeast Asia. Until last week’s Foal Eagle exercise started, the Fort Worth had operated primarily in Southeast Asia, where up to four littoral combat ships may be scheduled for long-term rotations by 2018. The Fort Worth’s participation in the exercise has stirred South Korean media interest, especially in light of North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper singling the ship ou... more »

Ino Marseglia - art that isn't yet.

Mike Philbin at Mike Philbin's free planet blog - 19 hours ago
these artworks don't exist. Yet here they are in all their multi-coloured textured glory. When I first saw these images from Italian artist Ino Marseglia, I was taken back to my childhood. The smell and feel and texture of Plasticine. I wanted to discover the medium, and Ino told me.. These paintings, as much as I like them, don't exist. They are photographic presentation or close-up snapshots of larger abstract acrylic paintings. But the abstract-painting source of these lovely images is not what interests this reviewer, it's the acrylic i.e. the sculpturally-folded living ra... more »

[image: HMS Lancaster (F 229)]A life on the ocean waves might not be everyone’s idea of heaven, but for the 185 members of HMS Lancaster’s ship’s company, the next nine months are the culmination of months of hard work. The ship heads off to the Caribbean later this month for a deployment centred around maritime security. Before that however, sailors from HMS Lancaster made a special trip to their ship’s home city as part of a four-day stopover. Read more

US Navy can be defeated by China, claims Global Times

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 19 hours ago
[image: Liaoning CV]In response to a New York Times pieces by Gregg Easterbrook on March 9, China's nationalist tabloid Global Times wrote a commentary of its own, saying that China is capable of defeating the US Navy in the Western Pacific with anti-ship missiles built at low prices. In Easterbrook's article, he said that China currently possesses only one outdated, conventionally-powered aircraft carrier and is rumored to be constructing two others. However, neither of those two vessels are likely to be nuclear supercarriers, according to the author. Furthermore, Easterbrook ques... more »

New U.S. stealth bomber shrouded in mystery

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 19 hours ago
Nearly 30 years after the first U.S. stealth bomber took flight, the Air Force's aging fleet is primed for a makeover; albeit an expensive one. The Pentagon is looking to upgrade its stealth aircraft for the first time since the 1970s, developing a high-priority, super-classified, next-generation bomber. The Air Force plans to award a contract to build and develop the Long Range Strike Bomber to one of the industry's most powerful firms later this year and hopes to integrate them into the fleet by the mid-2020s. Hagelin on QM, consciousness

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 19 hours ago
So far, I have only looked at pieces of this 75-minute-long August 2014 talk by John Hagelin at Stanford which was enough to get convinced that I want to watch it carefully tonight. John Hagelin has not only co-authored numerous top-cited papers in high-energy physics but he has also been recognized as a guru by the Indian meditating folks, he has run for the Natural Law Party in the U.S. presidential elections, he has acted in movies, and so on. He seems to be intriguing speaker to me, too. Sometimes in 1990, shortly after students like myself (or led by people including myse... more »

The Real News Network is doing a weekly panel discussion on Canadian issues and it's refreshingly less middling than the media panels we have become accustomed to. In today's panel, Leo Panitch and Dimitri Lascaris take on Bill C-51, the tanking tarsands, and the political positioning of the Libs, Cons, and NDP going into the next election. Canadians finally waking up to oppressive police state/torture C-51 Bill

greencrow at Greencrow As The Crow Flies - 1 day ago
*Marches against passage of C-51 are taking place all across Canada this weekend.* Will the protest demonstrations be enough to defeat this draconian, repressive, yet disturbingly vague law (that gives enormous power to CSIS and the RCMP--but which lacks government oversight)? Governments did not listen to Canadians when we opposed the war in Afghanistan. They don't listen to Canadians when, over and over again, we oppose oil tanker traffic in our navigably dangerous and ecologically vulnerable coastlines. We oppose pipelines and fracking--but they still don't listen. Another blogg... more »
