*TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2015A fabulous low-income school:* On Friday morning, January 23, we got in our car at 6 AM and headed south toward Durham. You can click here to confirm. We arrived before noon. From there, it was off to the neighborhood school for the school-wide spelling bee, which started at 1:30. This clash of the titans was being held in a neighborhood *public* school. As best we can tell, it’s also a low-income school. As best we can tell, the state of North Carolina no longer makes school-by-school income data available. I was just over at The Galloping Beaver and there's a side-bar with the latest blogging action. It hadn't changed much from yesterday afternoon! Is Canadian leftist blogging dying? Who is still working furiously to provide written political sustenance? Besides Montreal Simon and Owen at Northern Reflections? Well, it wasn't quiet on the Western Front one hundred years ago. On March 10th, 1915, the Battle of Neuve Chapelle began. It would last three days. It was noteworthy because it showed how offensives would go for the rest of the war. Montreal is naming a city library after Mordecai Richler. It's on Avenue du Parc, and close to the heart of the old, Jewish district of Montreal were Mordecai grew up. Though possessed with a power of expression that could be acidic, he was really a pleasant and gentle person. As for the Jewish population, it was alternately proud of his brilliant writing, and angry at his probing of Jewish behaviour. Check him out at the library. Start with "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz". or maybe you read "Jacob Two-Two and the Hooded Fang" or saw the film of the same name. I taught Jacob... more »

Greetings From the Weeds

Hi, guys: I'm writing you from the weeds of the internet since I haven't had time to post in about two weeks. And if you're still monitoring my progress and/or care to know why, here are some reasons: I've just finished the final edit for *Tatterdemalion*, my historical thriller. Over the last week and a half, I've been researching appropriate literary agencies to whom to send this book in the hope that maybe, just *maybe*, more than half the time I'll get an apathetic form rejection letter sent to me from some barely-literate 22 year-old flunky right out of Smith or Oberl... more »

Scotland Yard Chief Wants CCTV Cameras in EVERY Home

Mars Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 16 hours ago
SM Gibson The citizens of the United Kingdom are possibly the most surveilled group of people in the history of the world. Forget the NSA’s ever-expanding reach over every form of communication imaginable. We’re talking cameras… everywhere. The City of London is equipped with thousands of them, so is Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and, well, like I said before, pretty much everywhere. In a nation of 64 million residents, there is one CCTV camera for every 11 people in the UK. The British Security Industry Authority (BSIA) estimates there are up to *5.9 million closed-circuit t... more »
