Our Au currant Ed reformers: Sheep as Ruling Class

David Greene at Schools Matter - 10 hours ago
PART 3: Sheep as a ruling class. Who are we but a mirror of what we have learned over our lifetime coupled with the DNA shake we have been served? We have believed for a long time that the role of high schools and especially colleges was to prepare thinkers. That has morphed into preparing students for the specific discipline they have chosen (or have chosen for them) in which they will immerse themselves for the rest of their lives. Students arrive pre-molded by the tall tales, myths, legends, values et al. given to them by the institutions of family, community environment, relig... more »

Lou Reed is still dead, and still making headlines.

[image: image] Lou Reed is still dead, yet he’s still making headlines. An old interview with Uncle Lou has been unearthed in which he disses the Doors and bags the Beatles -- both of which have been gleefully re-reported in the MSM, while overlooking the more important point he makes about the importance of adult music, and his role in producing it. Watch an animation of his interview to get the point yourself. Middle section. Only a journalist could miss it. Feb. 18: paddling in the shallows...

Graeme Decarie at The Moncton Times@Transcript - Good and Bad - 10 hours ago
The Feb . 17 page one story in the TandT is "Are we tough enough to outlast winter?" What a juvenile choice for a front page story! For pete's sake, we and our ancestors have lived here for centuries. But the silliness goes on. Worse, the "Are we tough enough" story is arguably the only one in Section A worth reading. This is a newspaper that talks down to us as if we were all fools. The editorial is, as usual, severely local. It's about the boot for cars. It's the second one on that demanding topic. Then there's another op ed (for, I think, a total of three on a concert at magneti... more »

Volenti or Voluntary Assumption of Risk

*Volenti *is a legal doctrine which states that if someone willingly places themselves in a position where harm might result, knowing that some degree of harm might result, they are not entitled to sue the person causing the harm. *Volenti* only applies to the risk which a reasonable person would consider them as having assumed by their actions; thus a boxer consents to being hit, and to the injuries that might be expected from being hit, but does not consent to (for example) his opponent striking him with an iron bar. [image: X-51A Wave Rider]Russian military officials claim they have created a fuel that will allow missiles to fly faster than five times the speed of sound. If true, it would put Russia at the head of the pack in a growing hypersonic arms race, according to the Moscow Times. Hypersonic flight could slash missile flight times, allow missiles to avoid detection by other nations and upset the global military order. “The recipe has been created, and the energy accumulated in this fuel will enable our vehicles to exceed Mach 5,” General Dmitry Bulgakov, deputy defense minister, said on... more »
