Tuesday I blundered into putting on MSNBC before Chris Hayes' show started
and the ghost of yesteryear political journalism was barking away happily.
Appropriately enough, Chris Matthews' guest was Alabama racist throwback Mo
Brooks who was eager to get on TV and accuse President Obama of being-- at
best-- weak and, at worst, a traitor. Brooks and Matthews are from another
generation, a generation where brain growth ceased many decades ago. Both
were positively salivating at the thought of "extermination."
"Personally," said Brooks, "I think this needs to be the standard-- America... more »

States Move to Shield Themselves from Federal Gun Control Enforcement
Paul Lawrance
Both state legislatures in Arizona and Montana this week have passed bills
that would shield themselves from any federal gun control measures that
could be pressed upon the states in the future.
Both Senate Bill 1330 (SB1330), which passed in Arizona, and House Bill 203
(HB203) passing in Montana would prohibit state agencies and employees from
enforcing federal gun control that restricts ownership of a personal
firearm, firearm accessory or ammunition.

Baghdad remains the most violence province in Iraq. During the summer while

You Can’t Create More Savings by Printing More Money
*Guest post by Frank Shostak*
Savings has nothing to do with money. For instance, if a baker produces ten
loaves of bread and consumes one loaf, his savings is nine loaves of bread.
In other words, the “savings” in this case is the baker’s real income (his
production of bread) minus the amount of bread that the baker consumed. The
baker’s savings now permits him to secure other goods and services.
For instance, the baker can now exchange his saved bread for a pair of
shoes with a shoemaker. Observe that the baker’s savings is his real means
of payments — he pays for the shoes with... more »

Confirmation of testimony rather than corroboration of same
Language matters a great deal in law. Words are sometimes seen as having
almost magical powers -- and one word, corroboration, has a troubled
history.
But that does not mean that it is a bad idea to look for facts that confirm
the evidence of a witness -- but in so doing a judge should avoid using the
word corroboration

confirmation was desirable.

The Watchman Waketh But in Vain...
*" We in this country, in this generation, are --- by destiny rather than
choice --- the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask, therefore,
that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may exercise
our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time
and for all time the ancient vision of "peace on earth, good will toward
men." That must always be our goal, and the righteousness of our cause must
always underlie our strength. For as was written long ago, "except the Lord
keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain." "*
Prison Break Kaoshiung & ROC Politics
Wow. The prison break story in Kaoshiung by Bamboo Union gang members has
turned out to be quite an interesting political tale. It ended with their
mass suicide. But new details are emerging that are quite suggestive. As
the Apple Daily reports, the dead bodies were deliberately arranged in the
shape of an ROC blossom. The Taipei Times reported on the basics:
Authorities were continuing negotiation efforts last night with the six
prisoners, reportedly led by Cheng Li-te (鄭立德), a member of the Bamboo
Union (竹聯幫) triad imprisoned for murder, who were holding warden Chen

The Construction-Industrial State Eats Taiwan: Commonwealth on Housing Prices
*Caught these two fighting several years ago in Gukeng.*
Commonwealth once again scores with a very good piece on how the
legislature nuked reforms that protected consumers and instead chose to
keep housing prices to stay high and help developers make money:
In December 2011, with the presidential election drawing near, the
presidential candidates from both the Kuomintang (KMT) and Democratic
Progressive Party (DPP) strongly supported the quick passage of five laws
equated with "housing justice," including the registration of actual real

Russia has lost its ability to detect incoming nuclear missiles from space
[image: Soyuz TMA-15M]Russia just lost its early-warning system for
detecting ballistic missiles because of delays in the launch of its new
"Tundra" advanced early-warning system.
According to Russia's Kommersant newspaper, the system was due to replace
ageing satellites launched as part of the Oko programme that had already
exceeded their expected life span of five to seven years.
The system had been beset by technical problems, and in January this year
the last two satellites, which were operational for only a few hours each
day, finally went offline.

including Russian MiG-29 fighter aircraft, to fight drug trafficking in

The general said fighter jets would be "used only for defense purposes, not

for its neighbours in the region".
The International Court of Justice in The Hague passed a decision in 2012,
awarding Nicaragua 75,000 square kilometers in the Caribbean that used to

Proof That the Human Body is a Projection of Consciousness
All writers tackling the problem of consciousness make the same natural
error. They think consciousness is ephemeral and by inferance less
information dense than our physical bodies when it is quite the reverse.
To hold the same amount of information in the physical, our physical bodies
would need to be the size of Earth.
Thus it becvomes obvious that our consciousness or spirit body operates the
machinery of our physical bodies. This is a pretty serious leap in
perception. It thus makes perfectly good sense that our spirit body is

Chet Raymo, “Examination Of Conscience”
*“Examination Of Conscience”*
by Chet Raymo
“I have been reading Stephanie Smallwood's “Saltwater Slavery”, a close
examination of the trade in human beings between the coast of West Africa
and the Americas in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a sobering read, but
if there is one thing I came away with, it was this: We have an enormous
capacity to rationalize the most horrendous crimes.
Everyone involved in the slave trade- the European owners of the ships, the
masters of the trading companies, the ship captains and crews, the
plantation owners in the West Indies and the Chesapea... more »

The Poet: Maya Angelou, "When Great Trees Fall"
*"When Great Trees Fall"*
"When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down in tall grasses,
and even elephants lumber after safety.
When great trees fall in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines, gnaws on kind words unsaid,
promised walks never taken.
Great souls die and our reality,
bound to them, takes leave of us.
Our souls, dependent upon their... more »

“People pay for what they do, and still more for what they have allowed
themselves to become, and they pay for it, very simply, by the lives they
lead.”
“Any real change implies the breakup of the world as one has always known
it, the loss of all that gave one an identity, the end of safety. And at
such a moment, unable to see and not daring to imagine what the future will
now bring forth, one clings to what one knew, or dreamed that one
possessed. Yet, it is only when a man is able, without bitterness or
self-pity, to surrender a dream he has long cherished or a privilege he has ... more »
Senile Traitor and War Criminal to Endorse Jeb Bush?
*Henry K*: *Remember the last time he picked our next president?*
*by Noah*
The *New York Observer*, a Manhattan-based weekly newspaper, is reporting
that Henry Kissinger will be throwing his weight behind the candidacy of
Bush Crime Family member Jeb Bush by endorsing his candidacy for president
tomorrow at a fund-raiser being held by Bush's interestingly named "Right
to Rise PAC." It's a move that should forever be known as the political
equivalent of syphilis endorsing gonorrhea.
Bush, whose real name is John Ellis Bush (the name "Jeb" should be
considered a bit of marketing or... more »

Supplemental: The fuller extent of what Rand Paul said!
*WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2015Should this have been reported:* Here at THE
HOWLER, we won’t be voting for Rand Paul.
That said, we also wouldn’t vote for some of the recent journalism
concerning Senator Paul. With that in mind, we’ll show you some of the
things he recently said about vaccines.
First, let’s look at what Nicholas Kristof wrote at the start of Sunday’s
column. He gave a rather standard account of what Paul had said.
Headline included:
KRISTOF (2/8/15): *The Dangers of Vaccine Denial*
