Yahoo!'s Trust & Safety Team, along with Common Sense Media, a non-profit organization that provides parents and educators with online tools and information, and other safety experts, have now developed an easy-to-use, one-stop-shop resource for parents and children called the Digital Safety Kit. The first-of-its-kind kit helps families navigate the digital world safely, responsibly and ethically.
The kit covers a variety of pertinent topics for kids and parents, including cyber bullying, digital harassment, protecting and respecting privacy, security, as well as self-expression and identity. Typically, parents have many questions when it comes to these topics, and the Digital Safety Kit provides tip sheets to effectively answer the frequently asked questions.
Parents will also have the opportunity to share what they learn with friends and family, and the kit illustrates the best ways to go about it. It also provides the necessary tools for parents and others to hold workshops in their school district or community, to spread the word about online safety.
The key to staying safe online is to make smart choices, and the Digital Safety Kit provides the road map to help make that happen. Kids will be armed with effective tools to use, especially when faced with challenges in the digital landscape, and parents will be able to learn practical tips that they can use at home with their family. My takeaway is this. Web of Trust still works; somewhat....but if you don't check ratings comments you will miss the best material out there because of trolls.
