*“In The Sweet By And By”* by Chet Raymo “In the Bahamas there's a saying: Everbody wanna go to hebben, but nobody wanna die. I suppose you could find the same expression anywhere in the world. It's one of those universal axioms, a cognitive dissonance the human species has learned to live with. We want to live forever, but there's always that nagging fear that death is final. When someone comes along promising eternal life, we are quick to jump on board, to buy into the program, to make our Pascal's Wager with a generous tithe. The headline story is that a former mayor of Moncton who just gave a speech about the murder of three police officers in this city over two years ago. We need to talk about Bob Dylan. Not so much about his Nobel Prize for literature itself because, as a few folk have said, the truths of the poet have been considered literature for millennia. CAT being launched from a supercarrier. USN *The Drive*: *The Navy Is Quietly Arming Its Supercarriers With Anti-Torpedo Torpedoes* The growing threat of submarine attacks on US carriers is being partially addressed by a close-in weapons system that shoots back at incoming torpedoes. The danger posed to Navy surface combatants by submarines is rapidly expanding around the globe. Spurred by leaps in Air Independent Propulsion technologies, even small and relatively inexpensive AIP equipped diesel-electric subs can be as quiet their nuclear counterparts and still stay submerged for... more »

The Era of Fossil Fuels is Coming to an End

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 16 hours ago
There's a revolution happening in Standing Rock, at the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ camp, and across the country. Over 200 indigenous American nations and 6,000 people have travelled to the community in an unprecedented act of solidarity. Catalyzed by the fight against Dakota Access Pipeline, Native American tribes are protecting their water, but even more, protecting their sovereignty in the face of a colonialist State. In a time when we still celebrate Christopher Columbus, violent colonizer, the indigenous rights movement is more important than ever.

If this Project Veritas video really is kosher then what it reveals is simply staggering: 'In the second video of James O'Keefe's new explosive series on the DNC and Hillary Clinton campaign, Democratic party operatives tell us how to successfully commit voter fraud on a massive scale. Scott Foval, who has since been fired, admits that the Democrats have been rigging elections for fifty years.' This quote I felt was a killer one: "We have to do a better job of making our people (voters) do what they are suposed to do. Not asking them, making them. Not expecting them and taking... more »

Fred Upton And Richard Nixon Never Served In Congress Together, But...

There is no better example in Congress of America's descent into plutocracy than southwest Michigan's 15-term Republican incumbent, Fred Upton. He was born into one of the state's wealthiest families and he has served the interests of his class-- and exclusively those interests-- since first getting into Congress in the 1980s. Blue America is supporting Paul Clements to replace Upton and his new TV ad (above) delineates the Upton policies to this day that have marked him as the servant of plutocracy. After you watch it, please consider contributing to Paul's campaign here, so tha... more »

*This Lawsuit Isn’t an Answer for Detroit Students Wanting a Decent Education* Detroit school students, represented by the Los Angeles-based public interest firm Public Counsel, filed suit last month against the state of Michigan, claiming a legal right to literacy based on the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Ninety-three percent of Detroit’s predominantly black public school eighth-graders are not proficient in reading, and 96 percent are not proficient in mathematics. According to the lawsuit, “decades of state disinvestment in and deliberate indifference to Detroit schools... more »

*Your monthly scare story below* *As always, you have to look at what the Greenies and Leftists do NOT say. So here it comes. The news is that the global temperature for last month has just been promulgated by GISS. So that has to be scary, right? Problem: The temperature actually DECLINED last month. September was COOLER than August. The anomaly went down from .98 of a degree to .91 of a degree. But nowhere below will you see any mention of that. * No-one in his right mind would take any notice of such tiny fluctuations but the Warmists do. Their whole story consists of ta...more »

Pierre Trudeau famously quipped that Joe Clark wanted to be "headwaiter to the provinces." Susan Delacourt writes that his son will be no headwaiter: In the years since Trudeau the elder left the scene, his successors have adopted a number of other approaches to the provinces, from the deferential to the collaborative to the virtually absent. From obsequious waiter to dumbwaiter, you might say. But now it’s looking like we’d better get used to Ottawa coming to the federal-provincial table with some sharp and definite views about what’s on the menu. Even as the provinces grapple w... more »

The Sacred Spaces of Frank Lloyd Wright

You don’t have to be religious to appreciate that the architecture of churches prestents opportunities few other typologies do to show fundamentals in stone. The ideas embodied may be stone-age, but they are a search for what can be done with stone to express them can be glorious. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that the best spaces to be in – like the best architectural space in New Zealand -- can be a church or chapel. And when these sacred spaces are designed by a genius whose religion puts “man in possession of this earth,” who says “I put a capital ‘n’ on Nature and c... more »

Catholics Don't Have To Be Commies

The socialist dream has infected intellectuals for decades and no end of proof makes them want to give it up. Pope Francis is merely another victim of what is a simplistic idea that is wrong. As this makes clear, our whole christian culture produced modernity and the dignity of labor which liberated economics from the rule of the Big Man. The hopeless flaw of socialism is that it attempts to preserve the role of the King or Big Man while partially financing the bottom third of the economy in a restrictive manner. The liberating effect of micro lending showed us the actual fol... more »

Dispensationalism: A Doctrine More Dangerous Than Hell Itself

This whole subtext of Christianity has no basis in the new testament or the old for that matter. Yet it fires imaginations. Revelations itself is a typical psychic experience reflecting imagined fears and the author's death. Easily seen as something to add to the accepted scripture because it came by a meditation of some sort. Maybe it is important? Yet the symbolism is both Roman and Pagan been ultimately overcome by the Lamb. Mission accomplished i would say. That it inspires the present is an error and needs to be reined in. We have plenty of prophecy to deal with ... more »

The objects were buried coincidental with the collapse of the Atlantean global economy in 1159BC and represent the long two thousand year prior history of what we also know as the sea peoples. This same art was derived from massive wood carving that is still extant in Polynesia and along the Pacific northwest. We have extravagant bronze casting along with gold leaf decoration. Recall that the bronze would have been polished to a high gleam and the gold would naturally highlight the bronze. As we have discussed, the currency of the time was in the form of ingots of bronze o... more »

At this point we have completely entered the world of historical fiction with no possibility of actual corroboration. This certainly explains the tale of a postponed publication to avoid so called living witnesses to denounce this tale. Worse the lack of actual science makes the exercise futile and powerfully suggests that it was all constructed of whole cloth. Even the magic engine now possible was guessed at for decades. At the same time though, we are using technology of the time and place to do thinks that are likely outside the actual reach of the engines of the time. T... more »
