*"An Evening with Bobcat Goldthwait" in early June, featuring two of his films and a conversation with Bobcat himself, was just one of the many riveting and delightful evenings I've spent over the last year at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria.* *by Ken* For months now I've been meaning to write an update to the piece I wrote last September about the Museum of the Moving Image, to catch up on the large number of terrific experiences I've had in the last half-year. No, the museum isn't convenient for me, since I live in Far Northern Manhattan and work in Far Downtown Manhat... more »

Tropes and Tragedies in the Media

Michael Turton at The View from Taiwan - 1 hour ago
*Beetle larvae crowd a leaf in my backyard jungle.* The Economist actually took the Zhang visit as a serious event, and not a PR campaign aimed at the Chinese domestic media and the international media, where it was totally successful. First see this piece. It apparently hasn't occurred to anyone in the media that the head of the Taiwan Affairs Office is not a ministerial-level official, he's just the government bureaucrat nominally in charge of some affairs of China's drive to annex Taiwan and not what one would normally think of as a "minister" when discussing a government (does ... more »

This peace train was created by artist Anita Clearfield who helped us spiff up our look. I'm waiting for some more photos and will post them when I get them. It's never easy being in these parades because there is so much nationalism and superficial commercial advertising in them. Aboriginals pulled off a brilliant stunt to show the Tourism Bureau how obnoxious -- and deeply racist -- their plan is to commodify aboriginal lifeways for Chinese tourism... Austerity and Trade Union "Betrayal"

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 5 hours ago
My comrade and former Twitter sparring partner Mark has a post up about the state of the anti-austerity movement after, well, four years of austerity. His basic argument is one I would concur with, albeit with some caveats. He confesses to feeling *de ja vu* ahead of next Thursday's public sector strike, an action that could see around two million workers take industrial action. He observes that while the cause is just and should be supported, workers are only striking for a single day. Feminism: This Is How It's Done Now

We old farts remember the Abortion Caravan, Canada's first national feminist protest in 19fucking70. It seems we haven't come a whole helluva long way since. I'm Celebrating Independence Day by Watching INDEPENDENCE DAY

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Pottersville - 14 hours ago
(By Cyril Blubberpuss, Esq.) Just today I was telling one of my junior vice presidents as we opened the office (Oh, quit your liberal bellyaching- we only work eight hours on July 4th) that this is one great country. Now, granted, I'll admit my patriotism usually peaks on July 4th by watching *Independence Day* with Will Smith and wishing that Bill Pullman was our president before stuffing pieces of roasted animal carcasses in my mouth. Because, let's face it, that and killing irreplaceable brain cells by swilling alcohol perfectly defines what it means to be an American. ... more »

The NSA War on Privacy Rages On as Tor Project Users Targeted

With Glenn Greenwald's spectacular fireworks show having been quashed by the US government mere hours prior to publication on the increasingly suspect website *The Intercept*, we have been deprived - at least for now - of really big and shocking revelations but that doesn't mean that stories of the rampage of the NSA aren't getting out through other forums. In the most recent non-shocking disclosure of the war on privacy by the American Stasi anyone who attempts to use encryption and privacy tools in order to circumvent their prying eyes is on the ever-growing list of suspects. Oklahoma Republicans Penalize Solar Energy As Fracking Mania Causes Earthquake Swarms To Rock The State

Last February we asked a simple question: Would Republicans String Up The Koch Brothers If Oklahoma Disappears Into A Giant Sink Hole? We never got a clear answer and the Koch brothers still roam the world creating havoc and misery for ordinary humans and Oklahomans. It is, however-- being Independence Day and all-- a good time for an update, particularly if you live in Oklahoma or have friends or family who do. Yes today is the 4th of July in the once great United States of America.... It is called "Independence Day" but the truth be known is that the USA has never truly been independent or free... The Declaration Of Independence is to me still one of the greatest documents ever written, and Thomas Jefferson truly did want his new nation to be free of all tyranny and to be the true beacon of freedom for the entire planet... But we all know by now that the US has since that time in 1776 fallen under tyranny and is presently no longer a free nation at all......It is a truly sad statement to ... more »

Undocumented Migrants are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, aka Criminal Invaders

The mainstream media is a distorter of reality, which uses the manipulation of language to push propaganda lies. The UK Daily Mail has reported an encouraging story about US citizens blockading buses carrying criminal invaders of all ages, demanding that these parasites are not allowed to cross into the USA. The Daily Mail has twisted the facts, to reclassify the illegal immigrant vermin as 'undocumented migrants', which implies that they are merely people migrating to another country, who simply don't yet have the necessary paperwork!
