Movie Watch: "Calvary" at MoMI -- first watch the movie, then watch the writer-director and principal actor talk about it
*Brendan Gleeson as Father James Lavelle* *by Ken* Here's something to imagine. Imagine that you've just seen a movie that so overwhelmed and shocked you that at the end you hadn't yet had time to piece together how you felt -- a film that is so centrally built around its central character that he's a central piece of the architecture of the film (into which he had substantial input) -- and you knew that when the lights went up, the film's writer-director and principal actor would be coming onstage to talk about it! Regular readers have probably guessed that the setting was the Mu... more »

Peak politician
You don’t hear the Greens talking about “peak oil” anymore, and there’s a simple reason for that. The simple reason is that even the Greens now realise “peak oil” is bollocks. Fracking changed all that. So now, they’re against that. So we are still nowhere near peak oil, and given how resource economics work, unlikely ever to approach it. However, we’re a small country, with few naturally occurring sources of hot air and blowhard, and it looks like we might have now approached peak politician. The evidence for this frightful state of affairs grew even greater over the weekend, ... more »
If Gaza Isn’t a Genocide, What Is?: discourse as resistance
At the moment many of us are watching the news with bated breath. New sites, facebook and twitter feeds are filling with images of civilian deaths and the leveling of Gaza. There is growing sentiment that the ‘targeted’ operations in Gaza by the IDF have been willfully indiscriminate- with example upon example of civilian safe Continue reading

The Isreali Genocide Of Gaza Continues: WHY Do Israelis Continue To Kill Palestinians?
The Israeli onslaught and massacre in the Gaza Strip against innocent people continues... The laughable ceasefire is now over and Israel is again killing Palestinians in what is in reality the world's largest concentration camp with impunity. It is so disgusting that our own governments continue to turn their backs on this slaughter and cold blooded genocide of innocent people. There has always been one very nagging question that everyone should be asking, and it is : WHY in the HELL do the Israelis continue to kill Palestinians?. I have long been troubled by this sickness and h... more »

Can Anyone Trust Pete Aguilar?
Substance abuser and New Dem Petey-Pie lets his hair down I don't think even someone as astoundingly incompetent as Steve Israel could lose CA-31-- the Inland Empire congressional district-- for the Democrats again this year, despite having maneuvered to get an ethics-free, corrupt ex-lobbyist, Pete Aguilar, the nomination. After all, the district has a PVI of D+5, Obama won it both times with 57% and the Republican incumbent Israel allowed to slip in in 2012, Gary Miller, is retiring. BURNING THE DRAFT NOTICES FROM KIEV
The Vineyard of the Saker writes: For a couple of days now, I have posted various items showing the large number of casualties amongst the Ukie forces fighting against Novorussia, and I have observed with some amusement how many of you have expressed doubts about the veracity of these figures. Today Nora drew my attention to a short video of a Ukie army recruiting officer being confronted by a crowd of civilians, mostly women, mostly mothers. The video is a few days old, but this version is subtitled in English, so please watch it now.

the decision "you'll regret for the rest of your life": the reality gap in fictional abortions
The conversation around the movie "Obvious Child" has prompted me to re-visit a long-standing interest of mine, one I share with many other reproductive rights activists: the portrayal of abortion in the mainstream media. I haven't seen "Obvious Child" (I wait for DVD or Netflix, as always), but I've heard that it includes a rarity: an honest and positive portrayal of the choice to terminate a pregnancy. Considering how many women do have abortions - and considering that the choice is usually met with relief and happiness - this shouldn't be exceptional. Yet it is. On fictional TV ... more »
More Twitter folly from another BBC reporter
DB at *Biased BBC* has noted an intriguing change of header on BBC journalist Julie Macfarlane's Twitter feed. It now shows "gun-toting pro-Palestinian flag-wavers", says DB, quipping, "But she’s not trying to make a statement, honest. Just a coincidence". Now, why would DB read anything into that change of header? Well, probably because he's been following her incredibly biased Twitter feed. Please read it for yourselves and see what you think. I think it shows a one-sided BBC journalist in action, albeit the kind of BBC journalist whose bias lies in her re-tweets rather than i... more »
ISRAELIS WAGE TOTAL WAR AGAINST THE GAZA STRIP
Such is the small size of the Gaza Strip, together with the extremely dense way the enclave is populated, and coupled with the devastating way the Israelis have destroyed entire neighbourhoods including homes, hospitals, schools, government buildings and infrastructure as well as the huge loss of civilian life across much of the entire Strip, the Palestinians can be forgiven for thinking that total war is being waged against them. And, as the entire world can see in this day and age of social media, total war, contrary to anything the Israeli propaganda machine is saying, is indeed... more »
Planning for the Unpredictable
*Guest post by Randal O’Toole* How do you plan for the unpredictable? That’s the question facing “planning” organisations writing transportation plans for their regions. Self-driving cars will be on the market in the next 10 years, are likely to become a dominant form of travel in 20 years, and most people think they will have huge but often unknowable transformative effects on our cities and urban areas. Yet not a single regional transportation plan has tried to account for, and few have even mentioned the possibility of, self-driving cars. Instead, many of those plans propose o... more »

Is the Common Spent Fuel Pool the Source of Emissions?

I'm not sure whether the recent Fukushima Daiichi emissions are primarily coming from the common spent fuel area or from somewhere else, off screen of the TEPCO cams. If you look at my screenshots below and here: http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2014/07/fukushima-emissions.html you will notice that the emissions seem to be coming up from the common spent fuel pool building or an offscreen building in that vicinity. If the U.S. and its vassals truly wanted to know what dastardly deeds Russia is pulling against "innocent" Ukraine, they would either send observers ...or take advantage of unbiased observers such as Human Rights Watch. Here below Human Rights Watch members on the spot have not only found no Russian troops in the Russian-speaking province of Donetsk, or firing across the Russia-Donetsk border at these innocent civilians (as the U.S. alleges), but they have painstakingly determined that rockets that have been destroying buildings and murdering inhabitants of Donetsk have been fired from areas under the control of the neocon/neo-Nazi Ukrainian government (which the U.S. supports). Clearly Russia is innocent of what the U.S. and its vassals allege justifies nuclear war against Russia. Is all human life on earth to be eradicated due to the lies of Washington as promulgated by the despicable "mainstream media" and blindly accepted by the gullible American people?

*A spider protects its hatchlings.* A while back I wrote on how the north of Taiwan is the center of a colonial state, whose periphery is essentially everything south of Hsinchu. The reflexive nature of this state is apparent even in the small stuff. Let us recall that "independence" is in part a regional response to the way the north parasitizes the rest of the nation, sucking up its development money, exploiting its resources, impoverishing its governments, and eating up its promising young people. What people in the south want independence from is the colonial government in Taip... more »

Stephen Moore (Heritage, of course) can't even get his cherry-picked data right
If you have had the stomach to read the malarkey that the Heritage Foundation puts out, you have no doubt noticed that many of their publications are, well, fact-challenged. Just looking back at this blog, there are stories on how Heritage wants us to think poverty is swell, and multiple versions of how Heritage did not pioneer the ideas underlying the Affordable Care Act. Today, I turn from Obamacare godfather Stuart Butler to the new Heritage chief economist, Stephen Moore. In a great diary at Daily Kos, SantaFeMarie sums up the sordid story of Moore's July 7 column in the *Kansas... more »
Fun and games with transfer pricing
ProGrowthLiberal in his comments on my last post and in his own post at EconoSpeak highlights the fact that drug-maker AbbVie already makes most of its profits outside the United States, about 87% in fact over 2011-2013 by his calculation. For PGL, then, AbbVie is not the best example of an inversion because the horse is already out of the barn in terms of escaped profits. I see things a little differently on this, but the case is also highly illustrative of a principle we have discussed before, transfer pricing. Let's take a look at AbbVie's Form 10-K Annual Report, downloadable her... more »

Sony DSC RX100 Mk 2 is in the house!
*Our dog is totally excited to be going on a walk with the new Sony DSC RX100 II. He scratched a huge hole in the skin on his head so we have to make him wear that til it heals. Annoying for all parties.* A couple of years ago I bought a Canon Powershot SX260 (post). I ended up scratching the lens and rendering it useless, so I returned to using my venerable old Canon Powershot S95, which is a fantastic camera that I still love. Perfect in conception, easy to use, that camera is a dream. But unfortunately it is old.... Last year I started reading about the Sony DSC RX100. In Jan I... more »
Libya's Destruction a Warning to Egypt, Syria, & Ukraine

*Half of Britain to be opened up to fracking* Ministers are this week expected to offer up vast swathes of Britain for fracking in an attempt to lure energy companies to explore shale oil and gas reserves. The Department for Energy and Climate Change is expected to launch the so-called “14th onshore licensing round”, which will invite companies to bid for the rights to explore in as-yet untouched parts of the country. The move is expected to be hugely controversial because it could potentially result in fracking taking place across more than half of Britain. Industry sources said t... more »

What Does It Say About The 25 Democrats Who Crossed The Aisle To Vote With The GOP To Amend The Internal Revenue Code Of 1986
The whole purpose of the vote Friday afternoon was, euphemistically called the Child Tax Credit Improvement Act of 2014-- and sponsored by 4 corporate shills, Lynn Jenkins of Kansas, Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, Devin Nunes of California and Tom Reed of New York-- was to expand tax credits for wealthy families while leaving kids from poor families behind, standard operating procedure for Republicans, of course. But 5 Republicans opposed the grotesquely unfair bill and 25 of the worst conservatives from the Republican wing of the Democratic Party in the House voted for it. Let me pr... more »
"A Look to the Heavens"
"Over 400,000 light years across NGC 6872 is an enormous spiral galaxy, at least 4 times the size of our own very large Milky Way. About 200 million light-years distant, toward the southern constellation Pavo, the Peacock, the remarkable galaxy's stretched out shape is due to its ongoing gravitational interaction, likely leading to an eventual merger, with the nearby smaller galaxy IC 4970. IC 4970 is seen just below and right of the giant galaxy's core in this cosmic color portrait from the 8 meter Gemini South telescope in Chile. *Click image for larger size.* The idea to image th... more »
"The Solitary Mind And Soul..."
"The whole course of human history may depend on a change of heart in one solitary and even humble individual- for it is in the solitary mind and soul of the individual that the battle between good and evil is waged and ultimately won or lost." - M. Scott Peck
Chet Raymo, "Cultivating Amazement"
*"Cultivating Amazement"* by Chet Raymo "There is only one question, says the poet Mary Oliver: "How to love this world." So here I am scanning a recent copy of the journal "Nature," with articles titled "Parvalbumin neurons and gamma rhythms enhance cortical circuit performance" and "F-box protein FBX031 mediates cyclin D1 degradation to induce G1 arrest after DNA damage." What is this stuff to me, and how does it help me love the world? In her poetry, Oliver brilliantly evokes the sensate stimuli of love: the "lapped light" of pond lilies in the black pond, the goldfinch hatchlin... more »
The Poet: Linda Pastan, "What We Want"
*"What We Want"* "What we want is never simple. We move among the things we thought we wanted: a face, a room, an open book and these things bear our names- now they want us. But what we want appears in dreams, wearing disguises. We fall past, holding out our arms and in the morning our arms ache. We don't remember the dream, but the dream remembers us. It is there all day as an animal is there under the table, as the stars are there even in full sun." - Linda Pastan
"The Consequences You Sow: Action and Effect"
*"The Consequences You Sow: * *Action and Effect"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "We should strive always to speak, think, and behave with great thoughtfulness and compassion. All motive and action affects the cosmos in some way. The principle of cause and effect is the truth that allows us to change ourselves and the world around us for the better. However, this same universal law is also at work when change is not at the forefront of our minds. Our intentions flow forever outward in the form of energy, affecting both the people closest to us and billions of individuals we will li... more »
KIEV'S TROOPS RUNNING FOR RUSSIA
Hundreds of Kiev's soldiers have streamed across the border into Russia - abandoning their US-NATO backed army that is killing its own citizens in eastern Ukraine. Does this mean that the US-NATO will have to send in troops to Ukraine to rescue the Kiev regime? Already there are many rumors that Polish soldiers could be fighting in the east on behalf of Kiev.
Genital Mutilation: Facts, Fictions, Faux-Feminism and Fortitude
Although I’m technically off the grid, the news that ISIS proclaimed women and girls in Mosul should submit to genital mutilation (FGM), and the report’s subsequent debunking, compel me to emerge from hiatus. Leaving aside why a fake report on FGM should be viewed as needed to discredit a group who is executing civilian, forcibly displacing minotiries and destroying Continue reading

REMEMBERING OUR HISTORY
This is an ugly piece of American history that has been swept under the rug. Very few people know about this shameful event where the US Army, led by some of the most revered heroes of WWII, were turned on the veterans of WWI in the streets of Washington, DC. So all the talk about "support our troops" is actually a crock of bullshit.
Israel's Weapons of Mass Deception
Three days ago, the *United Nations **Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs* replaced their usual map of the Gaza Strip with one featuring a Christo-like pink skirt inside Gaza. The printing inside the accompanying tiny info box reads : "The Israeli military has declared an area 3 kms from the fence separating Israel and Gaza as a "no go" zone, sending evacuation warnings to many communities located there. This area covers 162 km sq. (44% of the Gaza Strip) Around 250,000 people were residing in this area prior to its declaration." *44% of the Gaza Strip and a quart... more »
Anti-American Commie losers support illegal invasion of America
Earlier today, I drove to Ramona, California to attend the *Ramona TEA'd* monthly Saturday event, which featured Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. The event was held at Ramona Mainstage, on Main Street in the heart of downtown Ramona, a small town in northeast San Diego County. Sheriff Arpaio is a well-known and respected figure in the American patriot community. The venue was overflowing, and by the time I arrived at 11:30 this morning, I wasn't even allowed to enter. Sheriff Arpaio was going to be addressing the illegal invasion of America, sponsored and facilitated b... more »
The Israeli Genocide Of Gaza Continues: Insane Israeli Prime Minister States That Hamas Is Using Rising Death Toll To Make Israel Look Bad (The Man Is A Lunatic!)
The slaughter in Gaza continues…. Right now we are approaching the end of a "ceasefire" that will indeed see Israel continue their onslaught on the innocent people of Gaza using US made and US taxpayer bought and paid for weapons of mass destruction…. The death toll so far is well over "1000" including hundreds of innocent women and children, and I have long claimed that due to the population density of the Gaza Strip itself the actual death toll is actually over 20x the reported figure.. It is indeed genocide…. It has been remarkable to watch and read all the lies coming out of the... more »

The Israeli Genocide Of Gaza: Official Israeli "Excuse" For Mass Murder Of Gazans Falls Apart, Israel Finally Admits Hamas Had NOTHING To Do With "Murder Of 3 Israeli Youths" !
Yes, the death toll in the criminal and homicidal Israeli assault on the innocent people of Gaza is now well above "1000" as reported by the Jew spew press… In my last night discussion with Whitewraithe, I laid it out clearly that since Gaza is so heavily packed with people almost wall to wall, I said that the death toll is actually right now in the tens of thousands. It is a slaughter of innocent people and it is so troubling that many of the people are still brainwashed by the lies that Israel is somehow doing this genocide as a means of "self defense". New Jersey's Hedge Fund Guru In Indiana
By Doug Martin Even though New Jersey hedge fund guru Sean Fieler likes to fight gay-marriage equality and women’s reproductive rights on the national arena, he spends a good deal of his leisure time buying Indiana politicians. Fielder is a big honcho in the school privatization movement in the Hoosier state, although you will never hear a whisper about him in the papers. Here is the nitty-gritty: On September 21, 2012, hedge fund manager Sean Fieler tossed district 30 Republican Mike Karickhoff $15,000 (page 10)for his campaign. A few days earlier, Fieler dished out another... more »

New Jersey's Arrogant, Tyrannical Slob
If you''ve been following the narrative over the last couple of weeks here at *DWT* you may have figured out that my new favorite book-- after Elizabeth Warren's A Fighting Chance-- has been The Invisible Bridge by historian Rick Perlstein. Maybe I'm so fascinated by it because I was living overseas for so much of the time he was writing about-- having felt living in a Nixon-led America not compatible with my personal sense of dignity or honor. I remember reading about some of the events he describes in the *International Herald Tribune* at the cafe in front of the Ministry of Fi... more »
Irresponsible reporting
The first shot from the BBC was fired on the Today programme, when for no obvious reason we were treated to the staggering information that Mira Bar-Hillel. “Is never going to go back to Israel.” “What a calamity” is what I don’t think many Israelis will be saying. Paul Adams began an episode of From Our Own Correspondent by painting an emotive picture. His impression of leaving Gaza was reminiscent of a mawkish article by the unequivocally pro Palestinian Jon Snow. A piece of sentimental propaganda so flagrant that it prompted Harry’s Place’s excessively tolerant Sarah AB to make... more »
BBC reporter says Gaza is "a giant prison" and Palestinians are subject to "collective punishment" from Israel
Following on from the previous post, there was a *From Our Own Correspondent *report today from Paul Adams, leaving Gaza after a week's reporting there on the present conflict. Though a radio piece, it contained just the kind of imagery that Brendan O'Neill and Hadar Sela were talking about - graphic descriptions of the dead in Gaza - that will have left quite a few listeners Radio 4 listeners gasping (or retching). Now, Paul Adams is a very experienced BBC reporter. He added some careful nods towards the Israeli perspective, but he buried them up to their necks in imagery of d... more »
Helping Hamas?
The Israel-bashing *Independent *columnist Mira Bar-Hillel has been gloating this weekend: ...a YouGov poll this week found that only 15 per cent of Britons support Israel’s actions in Gaza. The credit for that goes to brilliant, brave reporters who have brought graphic images of the Gaza atrocities to our newspapers and television screens. Mira forgets to mention that those those YouGov results show even less support for Hamas' rocket attacks on Israel (with 7% taking the David Ward line) and that more British people blame Hamas than Israel for the civilian casualties in the Gaza... more »
