A Guide to Classical Education at Home
from his talk at the UWWG. I saved the hand out.
The action themes he ( Gatto ) described were :
1. substantial community service
2. apprenticeships
3. parent partnerships on school time (this applies to school)
4. team projects (gardens, cross age tutoring, talent shows, food co-ops etc)
5. independent study
6. work/ study (starting a business?)
7. mentorships
8.solitudes (hiking fishing contemplation)
9. adventure/ discovery (mapping exploration meandering challenge)
10. field curriculum (furnish an apt,, shadow employee at a job site, analyze characteristics of good/ bad swimming pools etc)
11. improvisational play in groups without guidance
12. flex time flex space, flex sequencing flex text selection
Then he also had some aspects of what he called guerilla curriculm but I cant find the handout just now.
Im not sure what book would include these pieces bc I havent read his books. I do think he is an absoulte NUT but that's ok. Nuts have valid ideas too!
Why I Will HomeSchool My Kids
This is an Excerpt from John Taylor Gatto’s book. We have been participating in a national jailing system successful when it comes to “efficient” socioeconomic domination of the masses, the “dumbing down” as Gatto would say, of the human spirit.

You can quit school and still get a good education! First of all - you are not a failure - it is the school system that is failing you. You are a unique person and schools simply cannot cater for individuality. If you wish to find out who that person inside you really is, maybe it is time to take off in a different direction....
HEN is a parent support group, not a business. Whenever you contact someone at HEN, we are all volunteers who home educate our own children. We are all keen to help other home educators find the information they need, put them in touch with the right person, book you into classes/events/camps, or post out things you have ordered and we strive to do so as quickly and efficiently as possible. The HEN team do an amazing job of supporting other home educators and are often so efficient that many people who contact us don’t realise we aren’t a professional organisation but please do keep in mind that all us are volunteers who do have children at home who need our attention. For this reason, we can’t always respond as quickly as you would expect from professionals.
