*MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 2019The human monologues:* As late as this very morning, we didn't know where to begin. We'd returned, late Thursday night, to our sprawling campus in the heart of Maryland's 7th congressional district. Mister Trump had made the district famous during the time we were gone. During that same period, we'd witnessed an endless parade of human dumbness, not all of it during CNN's Democratic "debates." Even this morning, we'd still didn't know where to start! Edinburgh University Professor notes that the DR Congo Ebola epidemic curve is not one of a natural outreak

Jane Burgermeister at BIRDFLU666 WORDPRESS BLOG CONTINUES HERE - 13 hours ago
*Andrew Rambaut Professor of Molecular Evolution, University of Edinburgh, has noted that the epidemic curve of the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo does not match the pattern you would expect if it were natural. Namely, you would expect the number of cases to grow rapidly mainly in one place, the outbreak source.* *He has posted graphs which suggest that Ebola cases are constantly being introduced into the DR Congo population at different points to keep it going. The graphs resemble the very suspicious, unpredictable, random, fluctuating epidemic curves in West Africa in 2014.* *Per... more »

Cheering A New Arms Race: The End Of The INF

There is bound to be an initial boost in expenditure and testing on weapons that would have otherwise been banned by the INF. There will also be, if the views of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg are anything to go by, an increased emphasis on improving missile defences.

Kamala Harris Has 1 Big Weakness That Won't Be Easy to Dismiss

Clark Neily at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Clark Neily* *Politics, * Did Gabbard expose a hard truth? During Wednesday night’s Democratic presidential debate, Tulsi Gabbard tore into Kamala Harris for her track record as a prosecutor in San Francisco and later as California’s Attorney General. The attack was sharp and effective, earning Gabbard an outsize share of the post-debate commentary. Its thrust was entirely fair, too, as any number of articles have demonstrated, including Lara Bazelon’s recent takedown in *The New York Times* titled Kamala Haris Was Not a Progressive Prosecutor. Some people believe the answer is more money from Washington and bureaucratic agencies making sure everyone is following the rules. A third option would redirect our current system—putting patients and doctors in the driver’s seat, making health care providers and insurance companies compete for customers. An Expert Told Us What Draws People to Socialism

Genevieve Wood at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Genevieve Wood* *Society, * And why it fails. *Jordan Peterson spoke at a Heritage Foundation event in New York City. We discussed the rise of socialism in America, the importance of personal responsibility, and why his message is resonating with so many people. Peterson is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, a clinical psychologist, and author of the book “**12 Rules for Life**.” A lightly edited transcript is below:* *Genevieve Wood: People are interested in what you have to say.* *Jordan Peterson:* It seems that way, somewhat of a shock. *Wood: Or maybe... more »

Is the Idea of Marriage Dying?

Genevieve Wood at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Genevieve Wood* *Society, * "Studies show divorce and unwed childbearing cost taxpayers over $110 billion each year. But the real victims are children." Families are the building blocks of civilization. They are personal relationships, but they greatly shape and serve the public good. Strong families make for strong communities. Conversely, family breakdown harms society as a whole. That’s why America’s declining marriage rate is a real problem. While on the surface this might not seem like an issue that you and I need to care about, the decline in marriage has a significant im... more »

Iran's Air Force Just Lost a Fighter Jet: U.S. Made F-4 Phantom Just Went Down

Dario Leone at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Dario Leone* *Security, * Here is what we know, so far. On Aug. 4, 2019, around 12:30 hrs local time, the F-4E Phantom II inventory of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) became a little smaller after a 61st TFS F-4E crashed near Tangestan beach, north-west of home base 6th Tactical Air Base Bushehr (Iran). Luckily both crew members managed to eject in time and parachuted safely to mother Earth. Their unfortunate Phantom crashed into the Persian Gulf. We Lost the War on Poverty: Why Welfare Keeps Poor People Poor

Genevieve Wood at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Genevieve Wood* *Politics, * Our welfare system discourages work. It discourages families from staying together. And it encourages dependence on government. When President Lyndon Johnson launched his War on Poverty in the 1960s, he pledged to eliminate poverty in America. More than five decades, several welfare programs, and $25 trillion later, the welfare system has utterly failed the poor. The poverty rate remains mostly unchanged, and tens of millions of Americans are dependent on government assistance. Currently, the United States spends about a trillion dollars a year on 8... more »

Interview: Stephanie Seneff, senior research scientist at MIT, on glyphosate

Erin Elizabeth at Health Nut News - 16 hours ago
Written by Joseph Mercola, D.O., Ph.D. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, is a chemical worthy of attention, in part because no other pesticide has come even close to its “intensive and widespread use.”1 The data on just how much glyphosate is sprayed in the U.S. is mind boggling, and adds up to over […] The post Interview: Stephanie Seneff, senior research scientist at MIT, on glyphosate appeared first on Health Nut News.

Acid tests for any proposed solution to mass shootings

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 16 hours ago
In the wake of the El Paso and Dayton shootings over the past weekend, politicians and pundits are already bloviating about the need for more gun control, and all the yadda-yadda-yadda we've become accustomed to hearing from them. Mostly, they're dancing in the blood of the victims, seeking to build their own support on the back of their suffering, and offering "solutions" that are nothing of the sort. Of course, almost all the "solutions" being advanced are not "solutions" at all, because they focus on *tools* rather than *individuals*. As I wrote back in 2009, after the Winnend... more »

*California judges provide stage for kangaroo court justice over Roundup weedkiller* San Francisco area juries have awarded cancer patients some $80 million each, based on claims that the active ingredient in Roundup weedkiller, caused their cancer – and that Bayer-Monsanto negligently or deliberately failed to warn consumers that the glyphosate it manufactures is carcinogenic. (It’s not.) Judges reduced the original truly outrageous awards of $289 million and even $1 billion per plaintiff! Meanwhile, ubiquitous ads are still trolling for new clients, saying anyone who ... more »

Save democracy . . . with socialism?

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 16 hours ago
I got an offer to review a book, ". . . the 2020 election is a key moment in the history of American democracy where the United States can choose to correct course, installing a new chief executive and legislators that will defend bedrock democratic ideals and freedoms, or it can travel further down the road of Trumpism . . ." I wonder what those bedrock democratic ideals and freedoms are? Freedom of religion? Free speech? Freedom of assembly? You can't find them in socialism, the ideology that killed 100,000,000 in the 20th century.

WHY CAN'T WE HAVE A BETTER PRESS CORPS? (updated)

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 16 hours ago
Why does NPR White House correspondent Franco Ordoñez have a job? Here's what he said yesterday on *All Things Considered* in response to a question about a possible White House response to this weekend's shootings in El Paso and Dayton: But the White House probably needs to take on the NRA. This is an issue. The NRA is a big supporter of Trump, and Trump has been a big supporter of the NRA. He once flirted with going against them after the Parkland shooting, but he kind of backed off. Another issue is that, you know, he has - he is likely going to have to take a more direct push on... more »

On 5 August, Hong Kong protesters partially shut down the city. Protestors disrupted service on eight subway and rail lines and airlines canceled more than 200 departing and 100 arriving flights. In a press conference on Monday morning, Chief Executive Lam said the protests "challenge 'one country, two systems' and threaten Hong Kong's prosperity and stability". "The government will be resolute in maintaining law and order of Hong Kong and restoring confidence." This was a weekend of non-stop protests. How the SR-71 Spy Plane Was Born (Still the World's Fastest Plane)

Dario Leone at The National Interest - 17 hours ago
*Dario Leone* *Security, * History. At Lockheed’s advanced development group, the legendary Skunk Works in Burbank, work on a revolutionary intelligence aircraft had already begun before the shooting down of Gary Power’s U-2. This innovative aircraft had to fly faster than any aircraft before or since, at greater altitude, and with a minimal radar cross section (RCS). President Eisenhower deeply valued the strategic benefits of the U-2’s airborne reconnaissance during these tense Cold War times. And now the call came from Lockheed’s customer in Washington to build the impossibl... more »

Ed Reform Was Supposed To Crush Unions

*"The Era of Revenge"* by Tim Knight "Given the title, I want to make clear at the outset that this post has nothing to do with gun violence, particularly prompted of the events of this weekend. I've been thinking about this post long before those events, and even though I am loudmouthed to a fault about my points of view, the whole issue of guns is something I've never, nor will ever, touch. No sense is alienating the handful of readers I haven't pissed off already. No, this is about something far more psychological and long-term. England: Knife Crime Hits New Record High

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
Turns out that importing violent people is a bad idea and that this ramps up the violence from indigenous gangs in particular. Bye the bye, possession of a knife really needs to be properly thought out and certainly needs to be placed on the same level as a fire arm of any kind. In fact a knife is used in close contact and is a killing and cutting tool. It is a lousy defensive tool, because you will only use it in extremis and it forces you to close if you want to survive. If you can stand off, you can run. A firearm allows you to back off. . . *England: Knife Crime Hi... more »

Massive Avian Cryptid Observed in Lihi, Utah

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
This is an extraordinary expert eye witness report that also produces a rigorous comparable. The Sandhill crane is well known and similar in size to an eagle and our Thunderbird came in and snatched it directly out of the air. The description suggests a Stellar sea Eagle as well. It is abundantly clear that we simply do not see these birds, or if seen, they are far away at an indeterminate distance naturally confounding sizing observation. We easily have plenty of sightings but few secure sizings. At a distance it is way too easy to assume it is a golden eagle. My own sigh... more »

Approaching 9/11’s 18th Anniversary

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
It is not difficult to figure out what happened on 9/11 once you overcome the pure shock and awe of it all. The evidence tells us only one story. It is a story that we are to pretend is not true as loyal citizens. Remember that. Literally millions now know the truth about 9/11. Perhaps even a third of the population. This cannot be a secret, but we can all pretend it is a secret. The guilt involved is horrendous. That is the ghost rattling around the chanceries of the world. I do think that it needs to be formerly disclosed, but we also now live in a world of such disclos... more »

Harvard study says an inch of silica aerogel could make patches of Mars liveable

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 18 hours ago
This is really interesting although this must mean that the gel must be suspended on a strong support structure. That is possible. However, an inch thick is a lot of material. That alone may well make this completely impractical. What it should allow is architectural windows on above ground buildings that have a contained atmosphere. That will be helpful. I do think though that we need to build underground for most of our infrastructure. *Harvard study says an inch of silica aerogel could make patches of Mars livable* *Michael Irving* *July 15th, 2019* *A Harvard tea... more »
