Bomber Deathmatch: Russia's Tu-160 vs. America's B-1B Lancer (Who Wins?)

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Who dies? *The Tu-160--while it looks similar to the B-1B--is a very different aircraft. The Soviet Union designed the Blackjack primarily as a means to deliver a nuclear strike during World War Three. However, the Soviets designed the jet mainly as a means to deliver nuclear-tipped cruise missiles--though the aircraft retained the ability to do low-level penetration. As such, the Tu-160 is much larger and much faster than the B-1B--with a maximum takeoff weight of over 606,000lbs and top speed greater than Mach 2.05. By contrast, the B-1B weighs in... more »

...and I bet none of these guns will ever hurt anybody

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 15 hours ago
Amid all the leftist hoopla about how nasty and scary and deadly guns are, and how we should restrict the living daylights out of them, it's nice to be reminded that in very large parts of this country, they're regarded with nonchalance as a routine part of everyday life. They're seldom used to harm anyone - they're much more likely to be used to put food on the table. (Of course, if the need should arise to protect others from harm, they'll do that job, too. As an illustration, a carload of gang-bangers from a big city some hours away decided to rob a small town's independent pha... more »

Why Did the Mighty Battleship Become Obsolete?

David Axe at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*David Axe* *Security, * We think we can tell you why. *“The battleship era ended not because the ships lacked utility,” Farley writes, “but rather because they could no longer fulfill their roles in a cost-effective manner.” They were too big, too pricey to build and maintain, and their crews of thousands of sailors were just too large.* In many ways, the battleship represented the greatest-ever concentration of naval power in a single vessel. Between World War I and World War II, the big, fast, thickly-armored and heavily-armed warships dominated the world’s oceans. And then... more »

How Nazi Germany Could Have Won World War II: An Alliance with Russia?

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * That apocalyptic vision of a new Dark Ages almost happened. In the early days of World War II, Britain and France planned to bomb Russian oil fields. The goal was to impede Hitler. The outcome would probably have helped Hitler win the war. *In any event, fortune, or rather misfortune, saved the world. In May 1940, German panzers smashed through the Low Countries and into France. Six weeks later, France surrendered. Operation Pike was not to be. Except that, as Hitler's armies appeared on the verge of seizing the Caucasus oil fields in 1941-42, Britain... more »

Here Is China's Plan for a Nuclear War Against America

Lyle J. Goldstein at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Lyle J. Goldstein* *Security, * Take a look. *The major thrust of the article in that issue on the impact of the DF-26 on nuclear strategy seems to be to try to debunk the argument that China’s deployment of this new type of missile is “destabilizing.” Like their American counterparts, Chinese strategists seem to be increasingly practiced (at least in a domestic context) at selling the argument that more and new types of weapons enhance deterrence and thus strategic stability.* When one reads enough Chinese naval literature, diagrams of multi-axial cruise missile saturation a... more »

Coming to India's Aircraft Carriers: America's F/A-18 Super Hornet?

*Dario Leone* *Security, * Here is why it could happen. Dan Gillian, Boeing’s program manager for the F/A-18 and EA-18G, told Economic Times that his company had done simulations of the Super Hornet taking off from a ski jump and the aircraft can be launched with a ‘significant’ payload without any modifications. He added that the F/A-18 will be tested from a U.S. Navy ski jump as well. “We have answered queries from the Indian Navy and the simulation analysis is done. At some point, we will also take off from a US Navy ski jump. We feel very comfortable that we will pass the r... more »

China's Tanks Are Getting 'Shields' to Protect from Rocket Attacks

*Michael Peck* *Security, * China’s light tanks are getting active protection systems to shoot down anti-tank rockets. China’s light tanks are getting active protection systems to shoot down anti-tank rockets. This may indicate that China has solved a problem bedeviling armored vehicles: how to fit anti-rocket defenses on light armored vehicles without adding prohibitive weight. "Compared to a heavy main battle tank, a light tank like the VT5 carries lighter armor, meaning weaker passive protection,” a military expert told China’s state-owned Global Times. “Using an active prot... more »

The Problem With Comparisons In Education

Peter Greene at CURMUDGUCATION - 18 hours ago
Which is the best movie: *Ghostbusters*, *Singin' In The Rain*, *Casablanca*, or *Avengers: Endgame*? It depends, of course, on how we choose to compare them. Based on level of romance? On the happiest ending? Best dancing? Most money made? Best use of Sigourney Weaver? Criteria make all the difference. But it's not just the criteria; it's the problems with criteria that naturally emerge from the mandate to compare. One of the driving features of modern education reform has been the mandate to compare. Fans of free market education want to be able to compare schools; several reform p... more »

There are many other aspects that need to be fine tuned and what will be proposed in September will be bad mouthed by those in power.
