Snaps from The Mogollon
Blue Ridge Reservoir is located about six miles as the crow flies from the White Wolf Mine. Here are a few pictures. It looks more like a river than a lake as it snakes through the high country. Boats are limited to 10 HP. Or if you prefer, the canoe. It's all good. Fish varieties include rainbow, brown, brook trout, and largemouth bass. The lake is deep and it's a perfect place to run out the pop gear in search of a lunker. There are other lakes in the area, but Blue Ridge is the closest. Sunset and moon rise sometimes occur at the same time. It makes for an interesting evening.... more »

Russia's 85,000 Ton Aircraft Carrier Was an Unrealized Monster
*Paul Richard Huard* *Security, * It never reached the ocean. *Great nations have carriers, Russia considers itself a great nation, and therefore the ship would be a symbol of national revival and destiny. In other words, a new carrier would be one more reason to forget the bad old days when the Soviet Union disintegrated.* Had she ever sailed, the Soviet supercarrier *Ulyanovsk* would have been a naval behemoth more than 1,000 feet long, with an 85,000-ton displacement and enough storage to carry an air group of up to 70 fixed and rotary wing aircraft. World War III? Could China's New Missiles Sink a U.S. Aircraft Carrier?
*James Holmes* *Security, * A serious threat. *How the navy deploys new weaponry as it enters service is nearly as important as fielding the weapons themselves. Under a concept dubbed “distributed lethality,” naval officialdom wants to disperse firepower throughout the fleet while retaining the capacity to concentrate firepower on target. What that means in practical terms is arming more ships with antiship missiles, supplemented by gee-whiz technologies like electromagnetic railguns and shipboard lasers should they fulfill their promise.* Ah, yes, the “carrier-killer.” China ... more »

How A Few Islands In The South China Sea Are Raising Tensions Between China And vietnam
*CNN: **The tiny islands that could explode the China-Vietnam relationship* Da Nang, Vietnam (CNN)"The Paracel Islands!" the teacher shouts. "Belong to Vietnam!" call back about 30 schoolchildren, even louder. Their chant echoes through the three-story Paracel Islands Museum in Da Nang, which officials say cost the Vietnamese government $1.8 million to build. Since opening in 2018, about half of its 40,000 visitors have been schoolchildren, who can explore exhibits, including documents, maps and photographs, all curated to hammer home one point. History Forgot About the Dogfights Over Pearl Harbor

Col. Clay Hoppaugh, signal officer for the Hawaiian Air Force, had contacted Welby Edwards, manager of KGMB, and asked that the station remain on all night so a flight of Army Air Corps Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers flying from California could hom... more »
Simulation: U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ships Lose the Battle for the South China Sea
*David Axe* *Security, * Could this happen in real life? The U.S. Navy in late 2019 or 2020 expects to select a shipyard to build the fleet’s new guided-missile frigate. The 20 heavily-armed frigates will replace roughly half of the 50 or so Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) that the Navy had planned to buy before realizing that the lightly-armed LCS likely couldn’t survive in a major shooting war. Just how vulnerable is the LCS? In 2013 journalist Kyle Mizokami put the speedy, 3,000-ton-displacement vessel to the test. Booting up *Command: Modern Naval/Air Operations* -- a high-en... more »
A 'Hurricane' Took on an Armada of Battleships and Aircraft Carriers. Any Guesses Who Won?
*Warfare History Network* *History, Asia* [image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/USS_Nevada_Post_Operation_Crossroads.png] Well, in the Pacific we call them a Typhoon. But during World War II we had one epic showdown. *When the court’s finding reached the Navy Department, Admiral King agreed that the two officers had been inept and, with the weather data available to them, should have avoided the typhoon.* After two grueling months of action in the Pacific, Vice Admiral John S. “Slew” McCain’s powerful Task Force 38 retired in late November 1944 to the big ... more »
Nazi Germany Hoped These 5 Secret Weapons Would Win World War II
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* [image: By Tascam3438 - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=26602480] No dice. *During the war, 1,433 Me-262s were delivered to the front; however, few became fully operational and their numbers were too few to mount significant attacks on the enemy.* During Germany’s early string of victories between 1939 and 1941, Hitler informed the members of the nation’s aerospace industry that he had decided to impose new restrictions on aircraft research and development. However, by 1942 the Führer and his Air... more »

Doctor Peng Is Coming for Your Browsing Secrets!
Our old Chinese telecom pal HUAWEI – the guys that make smart phone chip sets that spy on your smart phone – is back in the news, this time teamed up with (wait for it) Google and Facebook (those two paragons of data security and political fairness) in an effort to build a private high-speed undersea cable connection between Los Angeles and Hong Kong. Trump’s DOJ, rightly so, has put the brakes on permission for this sneaky little project. As Ross Perot used to say, if this project were to get built, “that loud suckin’ sound” you’d hear would be … Continue reading →

Russia Can't Save Syria From The Israeli Air Force's Mighty F-35I Stealth Fighters
*Petri Mäkelä* *Security, * And Iran is on notice. *The Israeli Air-force had apparently been waiting for a provocation as the resulting counterattack against the launchers and the Iranian military infrastructure was an overwhelming one. Unlike in the response for the February drone incident, the IAF was well prepared with a large strike package that had a sizable SEAD element on hand.* On May 9th the Iranian Quds force that belongs into the Revolutionary Guards Corps launched a rocket salvo against the Israeli forces in the Golan heights. With an estimated surface temperature of about 250,000 degrees C, the central star of this particular planetary nebula is exceptionally hot though - shining brightly in ultraviolet light but hidden from direct view by a dense torus of dust. * Click image for larger size.* This dramatically detailed close-up of the dying star's nebula was recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope soon after it was upgraded in 2009. The Poet: Mary Oliver, "In Blackwater Woods"
* "In Blackwater Woods"* "Look, the trees are turning their own bodies into pillars of light, are giving off the rich fragrance of cinnamon and fulfillment, the long tapers of cattails are bursting and floating away over the blue shoulders of the ponds, and every pond, no matter what its name is, is nameless now. Every year everything I have ever learned in my lifetime leads back to this: the fires and the black river of loss whose other side is salvation, whose meaning none of us will ever know. To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hol... more »
