WTH – Was the mayor of Portland hiding in his closet yesterday?

Uriel at 'Nox & Friends - 7 hours ago
BPR just sent out an article entitled “Antifa thugs knock man unconscious, attack young girl. Portland mayor declares ‘largely peaceful event’.” After several weeks of threats online by Antifa agitators concerning their disruption of yesterday’s peaceful assembly against the rise of violence, they followed through. Granted had the police not been out in full force and been prepared to confront, this would have been much, much worse. Still this SHOULD have been halted before it began and those on both sides with weapons (especially those hiding their faces) should have been arrested a... more »

Obama Really, Really Wants To See Trump Defeated Next Year

When Glenn Thrush reported that Obama tried talking an increasingly less alert Biden out of jumping into the race for the Democratic nomination fearing his former VP could "damage his legacy," I wondered whose legacy that "his" referred to, Biden's or Obama's. "You don’t have to do this, Joe, you really don’t," Obama told him. Thrush reported that Obama has asked Biden staffers to make sure the gaffe-prone Biden-- who also has trouble sticking to the truth when cornered-- does not "damage his legacy" or "embarrass himself" during the campaign. The staffers have failed miserably an... more »

There Is Only 1 Way to Save the Aircraft Carrier from the 'Scraper': Study Battleships

James Holmes at The National Interest - 11 hours ago
*James Holmes* *Security, * History could help. *The reciprocal is that navies tend to see new, experimental ships as fleet auxiliaries—as assets that help the existing fleet execute what it already does, only better. Early on, for instance, naval officers considered the submarine an adjunct to the battle fleet. Aircraft carriers and their air wings were "the eyes of the fleet," scouting and screening for battleships, rather than offensive weapons in their own right. The dreadnought thus lingered on long after its successor, the flattop, hove into view. (Today the U.S. Navy may... more »

This and that for your Sunday reading. - Aditya Chakrabortty writes about the consequences of the UK's choice not to fund its or social infrastructure: We are right in the middle of an infrastructure breakdown – we just haven’t named it yet. You’ll know what I mean when we list the component parts. More than 760 youth clubs have shut across the UK since 2012. A pub closes every 12 hours. Nearly 130 libraries were scrapped last year, and those that survive in England have lopped off 230,000 opening hours. Each of the above is a news story. Each stings a different group: the books tr... more »

BWorld 359, Why is Philippines’ GDP growth decelerating?

Bienvenido Oplas Jr at Government and Taxes - 12 hours ago
* My column in BusinessWorld on August 13, 2019. The Philippines’ GDP growth over the past 18 years has a beautiful and not-so beautiful story. Accelerating from 2001 to 2015, then decelerating lately: 6.9% in 2016, 6.7% in 2017, 6.2% in 2018, 5.6% in 2019’s 1st quarter (Q1), then 5.5% in Q2. Why? For brevity’s sake, we limit the possible factors to only two — external and internal factors. For external, we compare the Philippines’ growth with Asia’s big economies plus the US. For internal factors, we check the growth rates of GDP’s three components on the demand side: household c... more »

"'Con'-fidence"

*"'Con'-fidence"* by Sven Henrich "Markets are subject to a giant con game. The game of CONfidence. Confidence must be maintained under all circumstances or we’re heading into a global recession first and then a US recession to follow. Consider the macro context here: Nine major economies are either in recession or on the verge of it. This includes Germany, UK, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Singapore, South Korea, Russia. Everything else is slowing down hard. Yields are plummeting for a reason and once again the world is looking to central banks to bail everyone out and for sti... more »

Zerohedge reports survivors blood and other effective drug will be offered to all Ebola patients from now on, but no confirmation from WHO

Jane Burgermeister at BIRDFLU666 WORDPRESS BLOG CONTINUES HERE - 12 hours ago
*No confirmation from WHO so far on this story from Zerohedge and many details to be cleared up such as how many doses will be made available? When? * *And will the faulty protocols be corrected to prevent people being infected by patients incubating Ebola while they wait in the treatment centres for the resuls of their tests?* *From Zerohedge* *Others have also suggested that mining the serum of Ebola survivors and harvesting that DNA to make antibodies could work. This could at least yield a set of genetic instructions for making antibodies with a proven track record against a ... more »

"An Objective Thing..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 12 hours ago
"Truth, an objective thing, is usually conceived of as something simple. Quite the opposite is correct: truth is enormously complicated; it calls for effort on several levels to arrive at its definition; it demands the utmost devotion in its service. Do you doubt it? Then resolve evermore to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. You must hurt your friends, suffer the most pitiless scrutiny and persecution, turn the festive occasion into a nightmare of share words and recriminations. You will be called "a sour-puss," a curmudgeon, a difficult man, and very possibly a knave... more »
