Transgender woman is actually a man, plus he’s a crook
I was reading a front page article in yesterday's WSJ about the woman hacker of Capital One who attempted to destroy the security and income (and lives) of 100 million people, when on p. 6 I noticed her photo. "That's not a woman," I said to myself. A male friend of mine (my assistant for several years) had the same facial features when he began taking hormones. So by paragraph 11 there was one reference to his many personal and psychological problems casually noting, transgender. Why keep it so secretive? Does income modify life expectancy?
In Norway the income gap reflects life expectancy, just like the U.S.--in fact, practically the same. People in the lowest 1% don't live as long as those in the top 1%. What I don't see in the study is 200-300 different ethnicities and cultures in Norway and mass immigration like we have in the U.S. For the most part they are of the same northern European stock, have a thicker social welfare safety net, and are mono-cultural. This really tosses out the socio-racial causes of income gaps we see in many U.S. studies. There are enough people in the U.S. of Scandinavian heritage to ju... more »

U.S.-China Competition Meets the Climate Challenge
*Matthew Petti* *Climate Change, World* As both China and America seek to lead the world’s technological transition away from carbon-intensive sources of energy, they may be entering a new era of "coop-etition." The future of U.S.-China economic relations in the age of climate change won’t be marked by competition or cooperation. Instead, the two powers could enter a period of what Professor David Hart of the Schar Center at George Mason University calls “coop-etition,” as both sides seek to lead the world’s technological transition away from carbon-intensive sources of energy. ... more »

The Problem Facing Anyone Who Wants Single-Payer Health Care
*Ian Millhiser* *Politics, * American government is too broken for us to have nice things. Earlier this week, Senator and presidential candidate Kamala Harris (D-CA) released an outline for her version of “Medicare For All.” The plan would give everyone the immediate right to buy into Medicare as an alternative to private insurance, then would gradually transition everyone into an “expanded Medicare system” over the course of ten years. Though Harris says that she would guarantee “universal coverage,” her end goal is not technically a single-payer system because individual health... more »

Summer Sailing Log Entry #4 - Plus: OMG I'm a CIS!
*Sculpture and Diorama in Downtown Chemainus, BC* SS *Limerence* departed Chemainus harbour around noon yesterday and motored southward at about 3 1/2 knots towards Maple Bay, another small coastal town on the Vancouver Island coast. It was a brilliantly sunny afternoon and the reason we were motoring so slow was because we were also trailing a fishing line, in the hope of catching a salmon. Although we've trailed a line several times on this cruise, we've only managed to catch one small "grill" salmon, which we threw back. About an hour out of Maple Bay, we must have hit some s... more »

Another Empty Chair?
*Kamala Harris* There are a lot of people who feel that Kamala (Slut) Harris or Elizabeth (Poke-a-haunt-us) Warren will be the next Democrat candidate for President. While that may be the case, (Who can reliably say?) Harris, who self identifies as a negro in the same way that Warren self identifies as an Indian, has a long way to go. She touts her former positions as a prosecutor and Attorney General, except she wasn't much of a prosecutor and owed her position of AG to being mistress to Willy Brown (influential California politician) while married to her current husband. Corruption in Afghanistan costs US taxpayers - again
The Afghan Air Force has had to acquire be given (at US expense) four used Lockheed Hercules transports - because the planes it was originally given (also at US expense), while more suitable for its needs, were sidelined by rampant corruption within its ranks, and among Afghan politicians. In 2012 Afghanistan announced that it would cancel the contract to buy and use 20 C-27A transports. The official reason was the inability of the Italian maintenance firm to keep the aircraft operational. The unofficial reason was the unwillingness of the Italians to pay as much in bribes as the A... more »

[image: undefined] The Tehran government has announced the arrest of seventeen Iranian citizens caught spying for America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Some of those arrested have already been sentenced to death. It is the third major roll-up of CIA agents in Iran that I have been aware of, the first occurring in 1991 involved 20 American agents. The second episode in 2011 led to the arrest of 30 spies. The earlier arrests reportedly eliminated what were presumed to be the entire networks of American agents operating inside Iran and it is to be presumed that the recent arrest... more »

Should A Teacher Be Secretary of Education
This is part of the value of having a clown car full of candidates for a Presidential primary: the contest becomes a primary of ideas, and certain notions gain traction by spreading across the field of candidates. Not that gaining traction means those ideas will ultimately prevail (a widespread notion among the 2016 GOP field was that Donald Trump was unfit to be President), but it's still an intriguing process. If I were Ed Secretary, I could stand up all day to talk to people One up-and-coming education policy idea that was first proposed by Elizabeth Warren, but has now garnered wi... more »
