E.U. Officials Cheer U.S. Democrat Election Wins But Do Not Expect Any Change In U.S. Policy

*DW*:* Germany, Europe see little hope for Trump policy change after US midterm election* Berlin isn't expecting Trump to change his "America First" stance following the US midterm elections, Germany's foreign minister said. Other German and European politicians hailed the results as a setback for Trump. Although Democrats made electoral gains in Tuesday's midterm elections, officials in Germany and other European Union countries said they do not believe the results will prompt a change in US President Donald Trump's approach to foreign policy. Fascinating discussion on populism on Evan Davis's *PM *tonight. We had a right-leaning commentator Danny Finkelstein of *The Times *and a left-leaning commentator Jonathan Freedland of *The Guardian*, both of whom agreed with each other and said much the same thing. Had the programme hired actors to voice their parts and got the actors to sound as alike as humanly possible they could have hardly have given a great impression of two voices speaking as one as we got here. Neither are fans of Donald Trump or populism, surprise, surprise.

House Goes Blue - Blessing In Disguise For Trump?

What will be the result of the "blue ripple" of the Democrat majority in the House and the resulting split government? Will we see "gridlock" as many pundits are predicting? An SI vote next week may turn \(\hbar\) into a known constant

Although it's just a bunch of conventions, I have been sort of excited about the systems of units – and the SI units in particular – for more than three decades. The most recent blog post, one from July 2017, announced plans to redefine the fundamental SI units so that some universal constants become known constants, much like \(c\) which became \[ c = 299,792,458\,{\rm m/s} \] after a 1983 reform of the SI system. In particular, I have rooted for a reform that would turn Planck's constant \(h\) to a known constant since my childhood – but a clear blog post from April 2012 is the... more »

British antisemitism - The Test

Here's the test – if you cannot see the flagrant racism in the BDS movement, and if you are obsessed with the perfidy of the Middle East's only democracy to the exclusion of all else, you are an antisemite. Brexit, Dark Money and the DUP

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 12 hours ago
I was intrigued by a comment from Rich over at *Biased BBC* this morning which ran as follows: The bBBC produced a much heralded, by them, piece of speculation that was supposedly cutting-edge journalism a while ago in the shape of a BBC NI Spotlight special. This programme asserted that £435,000 donated to the DUP and used by them to back the Leave campaign was in their words “Dark Money” from a disreputable and illegal source and blatantly queried the integrity of Leave campaigners and supporters. At the same time this left the DUP as a party and as individuals open to claims ... more »

Iraq Will Receive Some Exemptions From U.S. On Its Iran Sanctions

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 12 hours ago
(IRNA) There was some confusion when on November 5 Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced countries that received waivers from U.S. sanctions on Iran, and Iraq was not mentioned. The Secretary saidthat China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey could continue to buy Iranian oil. Iraq was not on the list when just three days before it was reportedthat Baghdad would be allowed to continue to by certain products from Tehran. It now turns out, Pompeo was simply talking about Iran’s oil exports, while Iraq was a separate case. Stories about the U.S. stance tow... more »

The Midterms Prove Only One Thing: Trump Owns the GOP

Tuesday’s midterm election marked the end of Paul Ryan’s Republican Party and the consolidation of President Donald Trump’s rule on the American political right. For Republicans to be embarrassed into repudiating Trump, they would have had to suffer a blowout defeat in the House of Representatives of at least the sixty-three-seat magnitude that Barack Obama’s party suffered in 2010. Scoop?

As discussed on the Open Thread, the BBC really did appear to get a major scoop yesterday. Some notes were "passed to them" of a step-by-step timeline ('grid') of how the Government might try to sell a Brexit deal to the public and parliament. The Government is denying that it reflects government thinking and is denying its authenticity, but it's a fascinating read nonetheless - and, were it authentic, it would be deeply worrying, as it would prove Government manipulation on a grant scale. Does Philosophy Need a Methodology?

Unlike scientists and mathematicians, most philosophers do not rely on empirical data—they philosophize from the armchair. But armchair philosophizing often leads to the development of ideas which look good in theory, but do not work in practice. Perhaps some kind of philosophical methodology is needed to ensure that philosophical theories are in tune with reality. Today I started reading *The Cambridge Companion to Philosophical Methodology*, edited by Giuseppina D’Oro and Søren Overgaard. 1776 and All That

Peter Greene at CURMUDGUCATION - 15 hours ago
As fortune would have it, I am on stage this week conducting a concert production of 1776. It's intended as a celebration of the 25th anniversary of our local theater where, 25 years ago, the first production was 1776. I was musical director for that production, affectionately remembered as the show that ate my summer (we were scheduled to open on a date based on the contractor's predicted completion date-- when that date turned out to be optimistic, we had to keep the show fresh and alive for another month or so). The Morning After

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 15 hours ago
Every day in the United States, millions of children place their hands over their hearts and pledge themselves to "one nation, under God, indivisible. . ." What to do the day after America's elections?

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 15 hours ago
The Washington Post reports this morning: The deep divisions that have defined American politics in the era of President Trump played out across the country in Tuesday’s midterm elections, as Democrats scored victories in key races in Republican-held suburban House districts but ran into a wall of opposition in red-state Senate contests. A change in the balance of power in the House would represent a pulling back from the president by key parts of the electorate, particularly by female voters. That alone could have a significant effect on the second half of Trump’s first term, ... more »
