China Goes All-Out To Steal U.S. Technology Secrets

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 53 minutes ago
*L.A. Times:* *China ‘has taken the gloves off’ in its thefts of U.S. technology secrets* It was the great microchip heist — a stunning Chinese-backed effort that pilfered as much as $8.75 billion in patented American technology. U.S. officials say the theft took a year to pull off and involved commercial spies, a Chinese-backed company, a Taiwanese chipmaker and employees affiliated with Micron Technology, a U.S.-based microchip behemoth. Yet what Micron called “one of the boldest schemes of commercial espionage in recent times” is most notable because it’s not unusual. Beijing... more »

Roy Clark (April 15, 1933 – November 15, 2018)

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 6 hours ago
Charles Aznavour wrote "Yesterday when I was young," my favorite recording of Roy Clark, who died this week at 85. Clark was a popular Country Western star, yet this song was a "cross over" and one of his most popular recordings. We used to watch Clark and Buck Owens on "Hee Haw" and occasionally using Roku find a channel replaying the early years of that popular show. "I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out, I never stopped to think what life was all about and every conversation I can now recall concerned itself with me and nothing else at all." Aznavour died just about ... more »

Progress or Failure in North Korea?

Peter Van Buren at 6 hours ago
[image: undefined] In this same week the New York Times asserted North Korea is engaged in a “great deception” over its nuclear forces, South Korean unification minister Cho Myoung Gyon is visiting the United States with plans to meet Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a Member of Congress, and to address several forums. Will he speak of diplomatic failings and deceptions? Or will he talk about how to make progress as the two allies seek a balance between economic rewards and North Korean denuclearization? It’s likely the latter. Cho may compare the situation to one year ago, when th... more »

A White House Press Pass Has Nothing to do with the First Amendment

Ryan McMaken at 6 hours ago
[image: undefined] A federal judge this week ruled the White House must temporarily re-instate the press pass of CNN reporter Jim Acosta's, who had been barred after an argument with Donald Trump in the press room. The judge ruled the White House had violated due process by banning Acosta. CNN, however, had requested a ruling saying that Acosta more or less had a constitutional right to a press pass, and that the First Amendment guaranteed CNN and its reporters access to the White House press conference room. Judge Timothy Kelly disagreed. According to the Washington Post: In exp... more »

Amnesty Strips Aung San Suu Kyi of its Highest Honor; Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize Should be Next

Danielle Ryan at 6 hours ago
[image: undefined] Amnesty International announced it would strip Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi of its top award, saying it was “profoundly dismayed” at her failure to acknowledge the full scale of atrocities against the Rohingya people. Before you are tempted to view this as some kind of principled, honorable move on Amnesty’s part, stop yourself and check out its dubious government and corporate funding sources, its selective support for the concept of free speech and the fact that it spends quite a bit of time soft-pedaling Western imperialism and its atrocities while magnifyin... more »

"The Reality Of Life..."

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 7 hours ago
"Despite my firm convictions, I have been always a man who tries to face facts, and to accept the reality of life as new experience and new knowledge unfolds it. I have always kept an open mind, which is necessary to the flexibility that must go hand in hand with every form of intelligent search for truth." - Malcolm X

"Why?"

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 7 hours ago
"Is there an answer to the question of why bad things happen to good people? The response would be… to forgive the world for not being perfect, to forgive God for not making a better world, to reach out to the people around us, and to go on living despite it all, no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond, what we intend to do now that it has happened." - Harold S. Big Charity as Big Capital

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 7 hours ago
1. Big charities discharge a number of functions. Their *raison d'etre* is the provision of some sort of service and/or support for certain groups of recipients. It may be a cold, grey, loveless thing as Clem Atlee put it, but unfortunately their works are often important and necessary. Especially when, for whatever reason, the state refuses to step in and charity makes up the short fall. Simultaneously, the cause is a charity's call sign. It exists because a need exists, and the worthier the need is perceived the more feted the charity becomes. It comes to epitomise a certain self... more »

Political scandals and more

David Brin at CONTRARY BRIN - 8 hours ago
So, the U.S. midterms proved that the republic isn't dead yet, and has some gumption still. The most important elections many have been at the state level, where voters may have seized back enough power to end many electoral cheats, like gerrymandering. Not in deep red states, of course, where citizens are fine with every kind of cheating. But democrats are realizing what Obama has preached -- that it's best to reform where possible, then let it dawn on every sane, reasonable and patriotic American that these are all Republican crimes. It mustn't stop there. Over a few weeks, I’ll ... more »

The Motion to Substitute

Gerard N. Magliocca at Balkinization - 8 hours ago
The Supreme Court would be doing everyone a favor by ordering briefing on the motion to substitute that Tom Goldstein has filed challenging the legality of the Acting Attorney General's appointment. I doubt that the Court would ever have to resolve this dispute. The mere order of briefing probably will hasten either the nomination of the next Attorney General or the withdrawal of Whitaker in favor of Rod Rosenstein, whom everyone agrees can serve as the Acting Attorney General.

What a sore, sour loser! Stacey Abrams

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 8 hours ago
“This is not a concession speech,” Ms. Abrams said, delivering a fiery speech to supporters saying the voting process was poisoned from the start by Republicans — and in particular Mr. Kemp, who had been secretary of state until he resigned after the election. He led by 60,000 votes, well over the number needed to avoid a run-off. If every time a black and/or female candidate loses and she cries foul, what happens if there are two black candidates? Doesn’t someone have to lose? Considering Abrams’ socialist stance and Georgia’s traditional conservative views, Kemp should be emba... more »

How disgusting!

After riding four miles on the cycle at the Lifetime Fitness center I switched to the treadmill. Because it was Saturday, it’s a bit more crowded than usual and almost all the machines in that row were busy. So I’m moving along at 2.5 mph reading my JAMA when I hear someone blowing her nose—a very juicy, sick as a dog, sort of sound. I looked to my left and saw a very thin blonde woman blowing her nose on one of the towels that are provided for showers by the gym. Oh yuk! Although I would not be surprised if a guy were doing that, I’d never seen that behavior from a woman. O... more »

Nearly 170 Dogs and Puppies Rescued from Horrific Iowa Puppy Mill

White Wolf at White Wolf - 8 hours ago
Nearly 170 dogs were rescued on Monday from a puppy mill near the Minnesota border in northern Iowa, according to a report from the Des Moines Register. The commercial breeding operation, known as White Fire Kennel, was keeping the dogs inside a home and in barn-like structures, Tim Rickey, vice president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) field investigations and response, told the Register. All of the dogs were Samoyeds, a breed of large herding dog with a thick, white, double-layer coat famous for herding reindeer in Siberia, and ranged in a... more »

Why 'Robot Wars' Might Not Be Our Future

Michael P. Ferguson at Test Feed Using Fields - 8 hours ago
*Michael P. Ferguson* *Security, * [image: Reuters] Despite the popular consensus that robot war is inevitable, future conflicts might look more like those of the past than some care to let on. In 1926, Maj. Gen. J. F. C. Fuller, one of the most prolific military writers of the twentieth century, implored his colleagues to adopt a more open mind toward merging scientific progress with military theory. Long before anyone dreamt of autonomous machines, Fuller had a vision: “To restrict the development of war by divorcing it from civil science is to maintain warfare in its present ... more »

America is addicted to war, violence & chaos

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 8 hours ago
Our real problem these days is climate change. Why are we wasting hundreds of billions of tax dollars each year building weapons for endless war when we could be building rail, offshore wind turbines, tidal power systems, solar power and more? Each of these types of sustainable technologies creates many more jobs than does military production. See the Brown University study that reveals these truths *here.*

Actually Fox should lose its ability to use the public airwaves entirely, unless it forces its cable division to stop creating and disseminating fake news that has become a danger to American social cohesiveness. CO: Charter Battles First Amendment

Peter Greene at CURMUDGUCATION - 9 hours ago
It's a reminder, again, that some charter operators feel certain they don't have to play by the same rules as the rest of the country. Victory Preparatory Academy in Commerce City, Colorado, is getting hauled into court over an alleged violation of First Amendment rights. VPA (6-12) and Community Leadership Academy (PK-5) are run by CEO Ron Jajdelski, a man who leaves a pretty tiny internet footprint. His LinkedIn account lists only his current job. But the sixty-ish CEO does turn up in a few spots. He appears to have attended Saybrook University's School of Organizational Leadershi... more »
