I'm Back From Russia-- With A Couple of Observations

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
I spent most of June in Russia and Azerbaijan, mostly Moscow and St. Petersburg. It was my first trip to either country. St. Petersburg, was a city founded in 1703 to be Russia's window to the West, and Moscow, founded in around 1150, is less European. Over 12 million people live in Moscow; only 4.8 million live in St Pete. (By contrast, NYC has 8.5 million people and L.A. has around 4 million.) People don't smile much in Moscow and they all seem to have poker faces. St. Petersburg seems more like a European city in every way. But even in St. Pete there's an underlying anti-Western... more »

Quote of the Day: On the breach just keeps getting more visible…

Another post-disaster disaster: Brownlee’s failure the only thing that keeps building

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 3 hours ago
[image: Oaf] *Christchurch Disaster Gerry Brownlee [pic Getty Images]* Christchurch City’s Earthquake Gauleiter Gerry Brownlee has been a bigger disaster for the city than the quake. Instead of enabling investors and property owners to do their own rebuilding, since Day One he has squatted over them all and stamped down any signs of entrepreneurial breakout. He has simply refused to learn the lesson that cities only grow and flourish because of private energy and investment, and the post-disaster lesson heard from around the world: that public inertia and uncertainty kills pri... more »

Hillary Clinton Vows To Prosecute All Climate Change Deniers

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 3 hours ago
Hillary Clinton has vowed to prosecute climate change deniers if she is elected President of the United States. The Democratic Platform Drafting Committee issued a statement on Friday urging the Justice Department to investigate “alleged corporate fraud on the part of fossil fuel companies who have reportedly misled shareholders and the public on the scientific reality of climate change“. This announcement represents the beginning of a much larger move to criminalize anybody who speaks out against orthodox climate change dogma. A FEMA insider has come forward claiming that a coming worldwide food shortage will see the price of food massively increased, sparking extreme civil unrest. According to two reports by the CNA Corporation, a federally funded research and development center for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, the world’s food supply is about to run out in the next few years. Man Sues Apple For $10bn Claiming He Invented iPhone In 1992

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 3 hours ago
A man from Florida has taken out a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that Steve Jobs stole the idea for the iPhone back in 1992. Thomas S Ross is suing Apple for a staggering $10 billion, saying that the company stole his idea after he filed a patent for an “electronic reading device” (ERD), a rectangular hand-held device that looks eerily similar to today’s iPhone, in 1992. Telegraph.co.uk reports: His lawsuit says he was “the first to file a device so designed and aggregated as to have created a novel combination of media and communication tools… whose identity was, since then, hij... more »

“How to fix a crisis: An Auckland housing manifesto”

[image: ERic1]There’s no excuse for it, but the housing crisis has now badly affected people’s brains. This morning on air, for example, the supine Bill English was attacked by Guyon Espiner, a sadly-impaired thinker apparently under the illusion that the finance minister decides how all the money in the country is spent, and who personally goes round putting children into cars every night. Interesting to hear that golfers are talking about pulling the plug on Rio because of their fears about the Zika virus, and the feeling that being there doesn’t mean that much to them. I started out the year with the goal of getting big numbers for my birding list. One of my challenges is that, while I do tend to see a lot of birds, I tend to be a bit limited on the number of species I see. There are a few reasons for this, some of which are under my control. One of the things I started doing last year was moving around more and exploring other locations. (Two trips to BC really upped my totals for last year.) I also tend to be more active with my birding in the first half of the year than in the fall but I have plans to remedy that as well. A few trips t... more »

As the leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada meet today in Ottawa, they're feeling pretty good -- particularly after last week's vote in Britain. Tom Walkom writes: Their cheery collaboration is being deliberately portrayed as a counterpoint to the British public’s gloomy rejection of the European Union. In effect, the three NAFTA amigos are saying: Hey don’t worry overmuch about Britain and the EU. Global integration is going gangbusters. Look at us. If it were only that simple. It's not that simple. Donald Trump is talking about getting out of NAFTA -- unless he gets... more »

“We were completely shocked:” Plant biologists issue mega-correction

Plant biologists have issued a major correction (what we dub “mega“) after realizing a significant mistake in their experiment. But as Ludwig Maximilians University-based authors Alexandra-Viola Bohne and Laura Kleinknecht continued to do their research, they found an error in the design of primers […] The post “We were completely shocked:” Plant biologists issue mega-correction appeared first on Retraction Watch.

Two new independent dumb attacks on physics in just one day

Two "mainstream" news servers posted their stories based on delusions of cranks yesterday. One of them is supposed to be pro-business and is owned by a former Republican presidential candidate but it had no problem with spreading the "ideas" of our well-known Marxist whore Sabine Hossenfelder: Could No New Particles At The LHC Be Exactly What Physics Needs? Ms Hossenfelder paints the last 43 years of physics as a failure after another because the Standard Model has remained important. This continuing success of the theory is something very important. 'WASHINGTON (Reuters) –Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, called on Tuesday for Washington, in parallel with its negotiations with Europe, to pursue a separate free trade agreement with Britain, once it has formally separated from the European Union. Paul Ryan, the highest-ranking elected Republican in the United States, echoed a call from many members of his party, who have dismissed President Barack Obama's contention that Britain will be at the "back of the queue" for trade talks.' NASA Finally Find Evidence Of Life On Mars

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
NASA have finally found proof of alien life on Mars following the discovery that the Red Planet once had an atmosphere similar to Earth. The Curiosity Rover found high-levels of manganese oxides on the rocks on the surface of the planet, which NASA say strongly suggests that life on Mars existed in the past. Express.co.uk reports: Another recent finding includes proof of ancient lakes on Earth’s closest neighbour, as well as the belief water once flowed freely there. The discovery of the manganese oxides could be the strongest clue that life once existed as they are formed here on E... more »

Samantha Bee And Glenn Greenwald Look At Why Brexit And Trump Are The Same-- And Different

One thing we can all pretty much agree on: in democracies, political elites, by their very nature, pretty much fail the voters who elect them. We're at a high-water mark of that phenomena right now and the support for Trump-- at least among Republicans-- here and the 17,410,742 votes (51.9) to 16,141,241 votes (48.1%) margin among U.K. voters to leave the E.U. (Brexit) demonstrate that very viscerally. The newest NBC News poll-- released this morning-- shows Trump with 41% support from registered voters, pretty high for a crackpot and sociopath. Only 30% of Republicans want the G... more »

Shocking Brexit Result A Huge Blow For Anglo-American Capitalism

Marc McDonald at BeggarsCanBeChoosers.com - 1 day ago
*By MARC McDONALD* British voters' decision to leave the European Union will have an enormous impact on the global economy for years to come. I expect there will be a number of losers as a result. I think Britain eventually will rue the day it decided to leave the EU. And I think the U.S. will also suffer as a result of this momentous vote. But in the long run, the biggest loser is the entire system of Anglo-American capitalism. I always thought that the British got a much better deal than they ever fully realized from the EU. The fact is, a lot of the hysterical scare stories abo... more »
