Impressions of the Auran Empire
"Forward, as occasion offers. Never look round to see whether any shall note it... Be satisfied with success in even the smallest matter, and think that even such a result is no trifle." - Marcus Aurelius I've been going through some of my newer stuff for the Adventurer Conqueror King System (ACKS) over the past week or two. Of late I've been thinking of fantasy RPGs, especially with a focus on the ability for characters to be movers and shakers of the world. (I've also been reading the new Laundry novel by Charles Stross and checking out some of the newer DCC stuff - the fun o... more »
Why Britain is for Separation (Not Segregation)
*"Forget it Jack, it's just Chinatown..."* "We don't go for segregation. We go for separation. *Separation is when you have your own. You control your own economy; you control your own politics; you control your own society; you control your own everything. *You have yours and you control yours; we have ours and we control ours. *They don't call Chinatown in New York City or on the West Coast a segregated community, yet it's all Chinese. But the Chinese control it. Chinese voluntarily live there, they control it. They run it. They have their own schools. They control their own pol... more »
I'm Back From Russia-- With A Couple of Observations
I spent most of June in Russia and Azerbaijan, mostly Moscow and St. Petersburg. It was my first trip to either country. St. Petersburg, was a city founded in 1703 to be Russia's window to the West, and Moscow, founded in around 1150, is less European. Over 12 million people live in Moscow; only 4.8 million live in St Pete. (By contrast, NYC has 8.5 million people and L.A. has around 4 million.) People don't smile much in Moscow and they all seem to have poker faces. St. Petersburg seems more like a European city in every way. But even in St. Pete there's an underlying anti-Western... more »
Quote of the Day: On the breach just keeps getting more visible…
*"One the paradoxes of our age is the fact that the intellectuals, the politicians and all the sundry voices that choke, like asthma, the throat of our communication media have never gasped and stuttered so loudly about …the people’s will as the supreme criterion of value – and never have they been so grosly indifferent to the people… “The most profound breach [today] is not between the rich and the poor, but between the people and the intellectuals."* ~ Ayn Rand in 'Apollo and Dionysus' . Another post-disaster disaster: Brownlee’s failure the only thing that keeps building
[image: Oaf] *Christchurch Disaster Gerry Brownlee [pic Getty Images]* Christchurch City’s Earthquake Gauleiter Gerry Brownlee has been a bigger disaster for the city than the quake. Instead of enabling investors and property owners to do their own rebuilding, since Day One he has squatted over them all and stamped down any signs of entrepreneurial breakout. He has simply refused to learn the lesson that cities only grow and flourish because of private energy and investment, and the post-disaster lesson heard from around the world: that public inertia and uncertainty kills pri... more »
Hillary Clinton Vows To Prosecute All Climate Change Deniers
Hillary Clinton has vowed to prosecute climate change deniers if she is elected President of the United States. The Democratic Platform Drafting Committee issued a statement on Friday urging the Justice Department to investigate “alleged corporate fraud on the part of fossil fuel companies who have reportedly misled shareholders and the public on the scientific reality of climate change“. This announcement represents the beginning of a much larger move to criminalize anybody who speaks out against orthodox climate change dogma. Washingtontimes.com reports: The proposal won the unan... more »
Government Insider: Civil Unrest Coming After 400% Food Price Spike
A FEMA insider has come forward claiming that a coming worldwide food shortage will see the price of food massively increased, sparking extreme civil unrest. According to two reports by the CNA Corporation, a federally funded research and development center for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, the world’s food supply is about to run out in the next few years. Theantimedia.org reports: And the crisis — which several factors indicate may already be underway — may begin to worsen considerably as early as 2020. Man Sues Apple For $10bn Claiming He Invented iPhone In 1992
A man from Florida has taken out a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that Steve Jobs stole the idea for the iPhone back in 1992. Thomas S Ross is suing Apple for a staggering $10 billion, saying that the company stole his idea after he filed a patent for an “electronic reading device” (ERD), a rectangular hand-held device that looks eerily similar to today’s iPhone, in 1992. Telegraph.co.uk reports: His lawsuit says he was “the first to file a device so designed and aggregated as to have created a novel combination of media and communication tools… whose identity was, since then, hij... more »

Multi-billionaire George Soros has taken out a cruel €100 million bet that a major European bank will collapse in the coming weeks. Express.co.uk reports: In growing signs that desperate Angela Merkel’s economy is struggling in the wake of the nation’s decision to leave the EU – Soros Fund Management said its short position was now 0.46 per cent – suggesting it had begun to take profits from the trade. Scientists Panic As Sun Goes Completely Blank
Scientists have expressed concern over the fact that the Sun has gone completely blank for the second time this month, something it hasn’t done for 100 years. On June 4th the sun went completely ‘dark’ without any spots on visible, and has remained almost completely blank for the last few weeks. Vencoreweather.com reports: The blank sun is a sign that the next solar minimum is approaching and there will be an increasing number of spotless days over the next few years. At first, the blankness will stretch for just a few days at a time, then it’ll continue for weeks at a time, and fi... more »

On the Charter Feeding Frenzy in Detroit
A clip from NYTimes: . . . .Detroit schools have long been in decline academically and financially. But over the past five years, divisive politics and educational ideology and a scramble for money have combined to produced a public education fiasco that is perhaps unparalleled in the United States. While the idea was to foster academic competition, the unchecked growth of charters has created a glut of schools competing for some of the nation’s poorest students, enticing them to enroll with cash bonuses, laptops, raffle tickets for iPads and bicycles. Leaders of charter and traditi... more »

“How to fix a crisis: An Auckland housing manifesto”
[image: ERic1]There’s no excuse for it, but the housing crisis has now badly affected people’s brains. This morning on air, for example, the supine Bill English was attacked by Guyon Espiner, a sadly-impaired thinker apparently under the illusion that the finance minister decides how all the money in the country is spent, and who personally goes round putting children into cars every night. (You should listen [from about 6:10] -- it’s sadly and unintentionally amusing.) Fortunately, some clearer thinking about the crisis has emerged this week from the unlikely pen of an economi... more »

You know, there *are* better options than #ClintonTrump
This is two minutes worth sharing for any voters not happy with the Clinton/Trump option in 2016 (and who in the hell they would both make would be happy?): But these Libertarian Party candidates have no chance, you say? But Johnson is polling between 12% - 16% in battleground states – and once polls show the ticket at15% then *by law* (yes, I know) Johnson *must* be included in all presidential debates. Olympic-grade motivation?
Interesting to hear that golfers are talking about pulling the plug on Rio because of their fears about the Zika virus, and the feeling that being there doesn’t mean that much to them. The fears of the Zika virus are real, and only the fact the Olympics these days have become a virtual Government-Games means that decisions about the disease‘s threat to the athletes are not being made rationally, or individually, but by committee. But the golfers talking about how much competing at the Olympics maybe doesn’t mean to them highlights again that, just maybe, some of the sports no... more »

New Territory
I started out the year with the goal of getting big numbers for my birding list. One of my challenges is that, while I do tend to see a lot of birds, I tend to be a bit limited on the number of species I see. There are a few reasons for this, some of which are under my control. One of the things I started doing last year was moving around more and exploring other locations. (Two trips to BC really upped my totals for last year.) I also tend to be more active with my birding in the first half of the year than in the fall but I have plans to remedy that as well. A few trips t... more »

As We Shift - Turn Off The *JKMS

Perhaps it looked like an exit ramp, built only for us, marked *“STARSEEDS, LIGHTWORKERS TURN HERE”* Perhaps, we were thinking, this road led us to that magical place where no conflict bothered us. When we got here, our work was done. It was here where we were finally rewarded. All of our pain and heartache gone, we live out the rest of our lives here, in complete and constant bliss. There is such a place. Yet it’s not on the earth. It’s within. All that we experience starts there. ... more »

Deadly Connections Emerge Between Ferry Disaster and Jeju Navy Base

That's When They Turn On You
As the leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada meet today in Ottawa, they're feeling pretty good -- particularly after last week's vote in Britain. New book on investment incentives will help shape policies debates for years to come
This past week I received my chapter author's copy of a new book from Columbia University Press, *Rethinking Investment Incentives: Trends and Policy Options*. Based initially on the November 2013 conference on investment incentives at Columbia Law School, the contributors were put through their paces to upgrade their conference presentations into proper papers. "Scientists know" - yet another reminder
As I sit in London watching the rain fall as it seems to have done for the whole of June this year, I remember a post that I made back in July 2009. 'As I sit in London watching the rain fall as it has for the last few July days, indeed as it did for much of the summers of 2007 and 2008, I remember the certainty with which The Guardian reported in 2006 as fact that: "Scientists know a lot about how events will unfold...which means that whatever we do, our climate destiny is fixed for the next few decades... Rainfall will decline in the summer and the increased deluges in winter wil... more »

*Reuters*: *Russia, United States blame each other for maritime incident* Russia and the United States gave contradictory accounts on Tuesday of an incident involving the two countries' navies in the Mediterranean Sea on June 17, each blaming the other for what they said were unsafe maneuvers. The Russian Defence Ministry said a U.S. destroyer had approached dangerously close to a Russian warship, and protested at what it said was a flagrant U.S. violation of rules to avoid collisions at sea. However, a U.S. Defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Russia... more »

CIA Iraq Invasion Would Only Embolden Sunni Regimes In Middle East
After the 2003 invasion President George Bush arguedthat Iraq was part of his freedom agenda. He believed that overthrowing Saddam Hussein was the first step in transforming the entire Middle East where autocratic governments and terrorism were rampant. In a speechat the Army War College in May 2004 for example, the president said that a stable and democratic Iraq would discredit militants’ ideology and help reform the region. Bush believed that only by going to the heart of the Muslim world could that change be effected. The CIA however had completely different ideas. In October... more »
