A Fork In The Road For Grassroots Progressives
*Matt Cartwright moved the grassroots progressive agenda forward yesterday* Hillary won all 5 states last Tuesday, although, it's still really too close to call in Missouri, 310.602 to 309,071, a bit over 1,500 votes separating them. Each has been awarded 32 delegates. Illinois was also close... 68 delegates for Hillary and 67 delegates for Bernie. Even Ohio, which was a much bigger win for her, the delegate count was 79 for the establishment and 62 for Bernie. The two Confederate states, of course, were much more strongly in Clinton territory. In yet another addition to the long, long list of bizarre things happening at CERN and it’s Large Hadron Collider facility in Switzerland, where scientists are in search of things like the “God particle”, the researchers at the facility are producing “small” black holes in order to find their elusive particles. How accessible—indeed, how easy—did Albert Einstein's slender volume make his world-famous concepts? We'd have to say that Einstein's book *didn't* make Einstein easy. We'd be inclined to support our claim by perusing some early excerpts. Einstein wrote quite concisely in his slender volume, which is still in print. ... more »

Time To Stop Laughing At Trump's Buffoonishness?
The *Economist*'s Global Forecasting Service is not talking the Trump Freak Show as a joke. This week, in an assessment of global risks, a Trump presidency rants between a European Union breakup and the tide of jihadi terrorism destabilizing the global economy. They cooly lay out their case without partisan rancor or hysteria: Thus far Mr Trump has given very few details of his policies-- and these tend to be prone to constant revision-- but a few themes have become apparent. First, he has been exceptionally hostile towards free trade, including notably NAFTA, and has repeatedly ... more »
Conflict of Interest
The press has recently been full of allegations of conflict of interest. Most of the allegations misunderstand the concept. Having decided opinions about matters is not a conflict of interest. Having an incentive to make a decision on the basis of something irrelevant to its merits is a conflict of interest. An example may clarify. Let’s suppose I grew up in an alcoholic household and saw the terrible things that alcohol can do to a family. As a result, I become a strong campaigner against alcohol abuse. I protest the opening of liquor stores and argue that alcohol should be ... more »
Irish Pub Owner’s Discovery Of Bones Could Alter Irish History
A decade ago, Irish pub owner Bertie Currie was clearing land behind his pub in order to make room for a driveway. While digging behind McCuaig’s Bar in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Currie discovered the tomb of three human beings underneath a large, flat stone. As The Washington Post reports, Currie’s discovery could alter the way we look at Irish history forever: [W]hat Currie had stumbled over was an ancient burial that, after a recent DNA analysis, challenges the traditional centuries-old account of Irish origins. From as far back as the 16th century, historians taught that ... more »

Let's Hope They Understand That
The Trudeau government has vowed to "fix" Bill C-51 -- the bill which the Harper government claimed guaranteed Canadians national security. But that guarantee came with a price: the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Communications Security Establishment were allowed to operate outside the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In January, Ralph Goodale and David McGuinty headed to Britain to ask for advice about how to fix the bill. But, Michael Harris writes, if they were looking for best practices, Britain -- under David Cameron's government -- was not the place to go: T... more »

Dichotomy paintings - March 17th update - three large wide abstract landscapes
*the March 2016 set* Today, Thursday 17th of March was the hottest day so far in 2016, and inspiration finally struck. I decided to stick to my original plan for my 100 cm by 50 cm landscape two-colour three-bordered paintings with the dream-circle, or Oggam-circles, added. I wanted these three new paintings to be gold, silver, bronze but you can't really do that with two colours, so the choice of colours for these three new works was made on the spur of the moment in the shop with these three tones in mind. But not restrcited to or restrained by thoughts of Olympic medallion A, B... more »

Joint submissions should generally be followed
R. v. McLellan, 2016 ONCA 215: This court has made it clear that joint submissions must be carefully considered and should be followed absent an articulable basis upon which the trial judge concludes that the proposed sentence would bring the administration of justice into disrepute: see R. v. Cerasuolo (2001), 151 C.C.C. (3d) 445 (Ont. C.A.). While the appellant's terrible record and the distinct possibility, if not probability, that he will reoffend justified a substantial sentence, we do not agree that those concerns were not adequately reflected in the 7-year joint submissi... more »

On the streets of San Diego, they sleep on the sidewalks, just outside the coffee shops selling over-priced lattes and stale scones. In the Amtrak station in Los Angeles, they sleep in the large stuffed chairs, clutching their minimum fare tickets

Campaign watch: The butler said it!
*THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2016A bit of comic relief:* Don't be deceived. It's entirely possible that Candidate Trump will be elected president. We're not saying he *will* be elected. But yes, of course, he could be. In our view, our own tribe's relentless name-calling (we seem to know few other plays) tends to heighten that possibility. But let's leave that contentious point for another day. For today, some comic relief: For a reason that has gone unexplained, the New York Times recently scored an interview with Anthony Senecal, Trump's "longtime butler" at Mar-a-Lago, his foppish Pal... more »

I am reposting this article from the EFN Asia website, written by a friend, Sethaput. One of those pro-free trade but anti-TPP papers. As a free marketer like Sethaput, for me, the best action is unilateral, one-way trade liberalization. Just give the consumers and producers more choices, more options, more freedom where and whom to buy or sell. This is unpalatable to many sectors of course, similar to advocating significantly shrinking governments and foreign aid institutions, so its chance of being adopted is very small. So the second-best solution is multilateral, worldwide liber... more »

*THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2016Part 3—Let's take a look at the excerpts:* By all accounts, Albert Einstein should be counted among the handful of greatest geniuses in all of what our scholars insist on calling human history. That said, Einstein's genius wasn't always completely helpful during his early years. His genius was apparently accompanied by an occasional air of disdain for his laggard professors. According to biographer Walter Isaacson, this attitude tended to slow Einstein's academic and professional rise. In 1905, at age 26, Einstein authored his famous "miracle year," presen... more »

Sometimes, You Have To Speak Ill Of The Dead
http://www.lapresse.ca/ Yesterday, Tom Walkom published an interesting piece on the trials and tribulations of Tom Mulcair. They are, Walkom wrote, not all Mulcair's fault. A lot of the blame can be laid at Jack Layton's feet: As someone with a record on the party’s left, Layton was uniquely positioned to drag the NDP rightward — which he did with great skill. Long-time policies that had little resonance with voters, such as one calling for Canada to pull out of NATO, were quietly jettisoned. On the symbolic side, Layton set in mot... more »

Meanwhile, a recent poll by the Harvard Institute of Politics of 18- to 29-year olds finds two-thirds of them neutral to Sanders’ self-identification as a socialist, while a McClatchy-Marist poll shows 25% of millennials saying they would “definitely vote for” any socialist presidential candidate: “As a millennial, I b... more »

*February global temperature rise proves nothing* *The shrill article below is panicking over February temperatures so I suppose I should point out a few obvious things. I have really dealt with this nonsense before but a few comments anyway. For a start, hanging anything on the figures for one month is dumb. You can have unusually hot months in a year where there is no overall change. Even figures for one year are rubbery. Figures for years can go up and down but still show no overall trend. You need a trend over a period of years to conclude anything. 2015 was a ... more »
