That boon to mankind: The drinks trolley
Did you know that one of the twentieth-century’s greatest inventions didn’t appear until 1938? I’m talking about that essential addition to any real home: the drinks’ trolley. What domestic cocktail hour would be complete without one? (And what home without a cocktail hour or two?) [image: Capture] In the 1940s, the barcart when you had one was merely an adapted tea trolley 1, but the designer of the original dedicated drinks’ trolley, bless her, was modernist Hungarian designer Susan Kozma, who designed this boon to humanity (above) for the fit-out of Budapest apartment of Eug... more »

*TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 2016Our plans for the rest of the week:* Before the week is done, we plan to complete our short, award-winning series of posts, AUTHORITARIAN WATCH. How the heck did Amanda Taub come up with her "astonishing" data about the number of authoritarians here in the U.S.? We'll show you the humble four-question test she seems to have used in pursuing that task. We'll ask you if you think it makes sense to talk politics in this way. We'll also continue our series of posts from our famous "self-governing" file. With our gatekeepers now long gone—with one party in the h... more »

Is physics of the sixth place of decimals important?
In his essay In Defense of Lord Kelvin, Michelson, and the Physics of Decimals, Tetragraviton starts with the well-known slogan attributed to Lord Kelvin, basically "everything in physics has already been discovered and only details are left". In reality, William Thompson hasn't made this statement. The Bottom Line About "Climate Science" and "Global Warming"
The war of words over "climate change" and "global warming" continues to be a fragmented one, with a wide diversity of opinions and little focus overall. Most writers on the subject are set in their views now, as the consensus authorities--alarmist propagandists all--have been all along, in the interest of their own favored positions and of the political power these radical activists see now being wielded by an insane Left under President Obama. Chet Raymo, “Try To Remember…”
*“Try To Remember…”* by Chet Raymo “In a sleepless hour of the night, I was trying to remember the last name of a person I have known well for more than forty years. When my spouse stirred in her sleep, I asked her. She couldn't remember either. One again I started mentally through the alphabet. "I think it starts with B," I said. Ten minutes later she rolled over and said, "The next letter is R." Bingo! The name popped into my head. Or I should say, "popped out of my head." Because it was in there somewhere, recorded in a tangle of neurons as materially as if it were written on a ... more »
The Poet: Galway Kinnell, “Another Night In The Ruins”
*“Another Night In The Ruins”* “How many nights must it take one such as me to learn that we aren't, after all, made from that bird that flies out of its ashes, that for us as we go up in flames, our one work is to open ourselves, to be the flames?” - Galway Kinnell
"Human Nature: What Kind of Creature Are We?"
"Human Nature: What Kind of Creature Are We?" by John Robbins "What can we know? What are we all? Poor silly half-brained things peering out at the infinite, with the aspirations of angels and the instincts of beasts." - Arthur Conan Doyle "These days, many of us tend to think that human nature is inherently competitive and destructive. We hear about “selfish genes,” as if our genetic makeup predetermines that we will be egotistic people and that we will fight with one another. We’re told that our species contains a built-in “killer instinct,” that we are descended from apes who nee... more »

Their king, Prasutagus, secured his independence by leaving his lands jointly to his daughters and to the Roman emperor, Nero, in his will. But when he died, in 61 or shortly before, his will was ignored. The Romans seized his lands and violently humiliated his family: his widow, Boudica... more »
"Don't, Don't, Don't..."
"Nobody can save you but yourself. You will be put again and again into nearly impossible situations. They will attempt again and again through subterfuge, guise, and force to make you submit, quit and/or die quietly inside. But don't, don't, don't. It's a war not easily won, but if anything is worth winning then this is it. Nobody can save you but yourself, and you're worth saving." - Charles Bukowski ○

"Dismissed..."
"It is easy to be disgruntled if you are denied rights and freedoms to which you feel entitled. But if you are not coherent, if you cannot put into words what it is that displeases you and why it is unfair and should change, then you are dismissed as an unreasonable whiner. You may be lectured about perseverance and patience, life as a test, the need to accept the higher wisdom of others." - Ayaan Hirsi Ali
