How Authoritarianism, Elitism, Nationalism And Populism Are Playing Out In The Campaigns This Cycle

I snagged the above chart from a *Washington Post* analysis of authoritarianism in the 2016 presidential race by political science professors Wendy Rahn (University of Minnesota) and Eric Oliver (University of Chicago) earlier this month. Their point is that Cruz's supporters are even more enamored of authoritarianism (of a fascist nature) than Trump's fan boys are. Something outside of what the two professors are going on about, however, is what jumped out at me, namely that the only candidate running for president attracting supporters intellectually equipped and emotionally mat...more »

Sunday March 20 marks the start of austral autumn which means it is goodnight from the South Pole for the next six months. As the sun sets in the South Pole, researchers at NOAA’s South Pole Atmospheric Baseline Observatory will not see any light for the next six months. When The U.S. Helped Start A Rebellion In Iraq That It Didn’t Want

Twenty-five years ago the people of Iraq rose up against Saddam Hussein following the cessation of the Gulf War. The United States played a crucial role in those events calling on Iraqis to overthrow their leader. The Bush administration was hoping to inspire a coup that would have the military replace Saddam, but keep the Baathist government in tact. When a popular rebellion started instead, the White House and its allies panicked fearing that Iraq would break apart and they would be stuck trying to hold the pieces. In February 1991 President Bush called on the people of Iraq to... more »

* This is my article in BusinessWorld last March 16, 2016. Adam Smith (1723-1790) was a Scottish philosopher known for his treatise on “invisible hand” welfare effect of the market system. He was the author of two classic works, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and The Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith and David Ricardo, along with the earlier thinker John Locke, were considered the “Fathers” of classical liberal philosophy and political economy. Jovito R. Zionists playing dirty tricks on and making nasty accusations of “anti-semitism” is to be expected for those who dare criticize Israel’s genocide tactics and mistreatment of the Palestinians as it is par for the course of political life in Washington, DC. *James Jay Carafano, National Interest*: *Why the United States Needs AFRICOM* *Terrorist threats have mushroomed across swaths of Africa.* Africa is a continent suffused with problems and possibilities. The U.S. military footprint there ought to be smaller, not bigger. And that's precisely why we need the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). Done right, AFRICOM can help the next president keep the American military role in regional affairs appropriately scoped. My colleague Nile Gardiner and I first made the case for standing up Africa Command in 2003. Four years later, the Bush admin... more »

How To Re-Build The Democratic Party: Primaries

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Primaries against entrenched incumbents are not just the most difficult to win, they are the most thankless and painful to run. The anguish the establishment put Donna Edwards through when she took on corrupt conservative Al Wynn and the torment the establishment put Matt Cartwright through when he took on equally corrupt and even more conservative Tim Holden, have paid off for voters in Maryland and Pennsylvania where two of there worst members of Congress have been replaced by two of the best members of Congress. Blue America donors are proud to have taken on the establishment b... more »

ISIS Plan To Establish Caliphate In Libya Is In Jeopardy

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
ISIS terrorists retreating from Iraq and Syria to establish an Islamic State in Libya are going to find it difficult to break away from their coastal enclave. The barren deserts of Libya devoid of shelter and the sectarianism that was rife in the Middle East is not conducive to Jihadist causes. According to a new report, the terrorist group face major roadblocks to establishing a true back-up capital there. The Independent reports: The Combating Terrorism Center report, published on 17 March, said the terrorist group Isis suffered “setbacks” in Libya and is struggling to expand ther... more »

"The refusal to take sides on great moral issues is itself a decision. It is a silent acquiescence to evil. The Tragedy of our time is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction." - Fulton J. Sheen

Russia May Establish Security Zone In The Mediterranean To Fight ISIS

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
Following successful military operations in Syria, Russia could now provide security for two Maghreb countries, Morocco and Tunisia who also face a threat from the ISIS, according to French media Boulevard Voltaire. Sputnik reports: Russia would establish a security zone in the Mediterranean and, thus, will be able to contain Turkish hegemony in the region and jihadist movements destabilizing both the Middle East and its peripheral regions, Professor Benjamin Wirtz wrote for Boulevard Voltaire. Russia’s withdrawal from Syria fits in the context of the Kremlin’s multiplying diplomatic... more »

“The Veneer of Justice in a Kingdom of Crime”

*“The Veneer of Justice in a Kingdom of Crime”* by John Titus “All government, in its essence, is a conspiracy against the superior man: its one permanent object is to oppress him and cripple him…The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And even if he is not romantic personally he is very apt to spread d...more »

Musings On Iraq In The News

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 day ago
I was interviewed by Andrew Tilghman for his article “Ramadi was supposed to be rid of ISIS. That’s not entirely true,” for the Military Times.

Are you left wondering what is now going on in Syria, Turkey, and the rest of the middle east? What Russia is doing now that it has stopped bombing ISIS/ISIL/Daesh jihadis? Well, Russia is now "calling the shots", not with bombs, but with diplomacy. In any event, the intrepid West Asia correspondent Pepe Escobar reports that: "It's spy thriller stuff; no one is talking. But there are indications Russia would not announce a partial withdrawal from Syria right before the Geneva negotiations ramp up unless a grand bargain with Washington had been struck. Some sort of bargain is in play, of which we still don't know the details; that's what the CIA itself is basically saying through their multiple US Think Tankland mouthpieces. And that's the real meaning hidden under a carefully timed Barack Obama interview that, although inviting suspension of disbelief, reads like a major policy change document."

Five Countries Want A Military Base In Djibouti

BBC *Sputnik:* *Prime Real Estate? Five Countries Set to Build Military Bases in Djibouti* Three foreign military powers, the United States, France and Japan, have military forces positioned in Djibouti and another two, China and Saudi Arabia, are set to establish bases there soon. Djibouti has a land area of only 23,000 square kilometers, a population of just 830,000 and no natural resources worth noting, yet it is becoming an important country in the international security arena. The US has the largest foreign military presence hosting some 4,000 personnel at Camp Lemonier. The... more »

Note how he does not mention banksters once...nor are they in the audience....There is no fawning, intermittent clapping. He mentioned the high "educational" level of the forces several times. He mentioned "state of the art" technologies several times. Compare this speech to any you've heard in the past decades from Western Leaders. I can only think of one leader from my memory who compares....John F. Kennedy (who was also an actu... more »

Thomas Frank: What's Wrong With The Democratic Party?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
I was in a state of shock this week. I met with some Democratic insiders and the most insider of all-- after repeating word-for-word the Wall Street/Schumer line of why Alan Grayson must be destroyed-- agreed with my assessment of Debbie Wasserman Schultz... perhaps not the specifics of the case against her, but totally with the conclusion: for the sake of the Democratic Party and for the sake of the country, she must be defeated in the late August primary. Wow! Everyone who voiced an opinion inside this relatively establishment group agreed. Of course they didn't do anything abo... more »

Another mixed bag

sue at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
People sometimes ask me if I’d like to have a job as a proper TV critic. No way. One of the reasons I don’t blog more frequently, or tackle a broader range of programmes is that I don’t watch all that much TV - apart from the News Channel and, say, a Scandi Noir or two on BBC Four. After its shaky start I’m now enjoying The Night Manager, too. I never listen to radio 5 live, which BBC bias-watchers often cite as the source of much frustration. On Sunday mornings, if I’m not doing lunch, I do like to binge on Andrew Marr, The Big Questions and Sunday Politics. This morning, after Ma...more »

As in real life, we tend to be shocked when people we know online pass away. I don't know if it's just me but I at least, and perhaps some of you, tend to think our online presence confers some immortality upon us. And up to a point, that's true. Many who have died still have active Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Youtube accounts as well as blogs. But in many cases, that simply isn't true. Take the tragic case of Diane Hugo, aka Dusty Taylor. Diane was apparently murdered by her own son roughly a year ago with a gunshot wound to the head. Her body was then stuffed in a ... more »

Earth Hour 7, Lesson in basic electrical engineering

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 1 day ago
Another Earth Hour drama the other day. The WWF guys, their buddies, should do it nightly, 365 nights a year, and several hours a night if possible. Better yet, they should have an office in North Korea where EH is a nightly reality for many of its neighbors. A good satellite photo of Europe and Africa, same time zones. Darkness is cool? Am laughing. Photo from http://geology.com/articles/satellite-photo-earth-at-night.shtml I am reposting a nice intro to basic electrical engineering, from my engineer-economist friend, Cynthia Hernandez. Cynthia gave me permission to repost this.... more »
