Hurricane Trump

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
*Hurricane Dorian* Mid day Tuesday, Dorian continues to sit stalled on top of the Bahamas losing energy. It is now down to a category 2 storm. The risk to Florida is now dropping to that of a tropical storm. The most likely path is now North to North East and not heavily into the coast anywhere. This is all great news and completely unexpected. Sadly the Bahamas has lost half of its housing and folks have certainly died as well. We hope the the refuges saved most of them. At this time we know that the airport and the hospital has been badly whacked. At this point, we ... more »

Why They Keep Trying to Blame Capitalists for Slavery

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
Actually this particualr claim goes to the core of understanding economic theory at all. The antique economy made do without any significant form of available cfredit and all economic activity needed to be settled in goods including minted coinmage. For most, that meant in labour. The only available credit asset was an individual's future labour and from that we naturally derived slavery as such a tool. So far so good until increased trade and real colonies got involved. Indenture contracts for irish serfs soon turned into contracts for captured slaves and then all this became... more »

Why Do Humans Still Drink Milk?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
Humans do use milk and they sometimes drink it as well. It happens to be a convenient food product. I do think that we need full access to raw milk and similar access to a number of vegatable milks as well. Then we need to optimize their consumption. This piece is mostly propaganda of c ourse, but that is a reaction to universally mandated practice in particualr favour of pasturized milk which i am inclined to oppose. Yet having consumers switch to raw milk is now a tall order. Animal milk will continue to be a growing industry suppling derivative products in particualar. ... more »

Why the Queen Said Yes to Boris Johnson’s Request to Suspend Parliament

Laura Beers at The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Laura Beers* *Politics, Europe* [image: Reuters] Britain has new problems. When Queen Elizabeth II agreed to suspend Parliament, she gave British Prime Minister Boris Johnson what he wanted. Opponents of Johnson’s move view it as a cynical and perhaps unconstitutional maneuver. Johnson, they say, is trying to quash growing opposition to his efforts to leave the European Union. Johnson took office July 24, promising to pull the U.K. out of the EU by Oct. 31 even if his government and the European Union hadn’t agreed to terms by then.
