Jersey, a Gorilla and the Civil War in Cameroon
Global Issues News Headlines - 11 hours ago
STOCKHOLM / ROME, Sep 23 (IPS) - A month ago I visited Jersey, one of the few European territories still welcoming refugees, though in the case of Jersey they have to be wealthy and are generally fleeing not from war and misery, but from taxes. Once Jersey and the nearby island of Guernsey harbored one of Europe´s most famous political refugees – Victor Hugo (1802-1885), who after he had been too outspoken in his criticism of the autocrat Louis Napoleon found it more convenient to live on the Channel Islands than in France. In spite of being very close to France and with a populat... more »

GENEVA, Sep 23 (IPS) - The backlash against globalization can no longer be ignoredIncreasing economic inequality is a defining challenge of our time. The perception that the top 1% of income earners are gaining at the expense of the other 99% has resulted in widespread public debates in many count... more »

U.S. judge orders focused release of some Florida FBI records concerning 9/11 hijackers
One of our readers, Liberty One, sent in a contact inquiry on a Geller report titled “Judge orders release of FBI records” and we thank him/her. It is rare that I let myself consider much on 9/11 because it was so traumatic. Of course, there are as many theories of what happened as there are those willing to dive into the horror of that time. But the fact that a judge just after the seventeenth anniversary also brings up the issue is interesting. Dan Christensen, FloridaBulldog.org, has pursued this event for perhaps a decade or more. The Soviet Union produced hot-rod submarines that could swim faster, take more damage, and dive deeper than their American counterparts—but the U.S. Navy remained fairly confident it had the Soviet submarines outmatched because they were all extremely noisy. Will More US Troops in Saudi Arabia Make America Great?
[image: undefined] President Trump deserves credit for resisting the war cries from neocons like Sen. Lindsey Graham and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after last week’s attack on two Saudi oil facilities. On the New Truths and the Old Truths
There are two ways by which knowledge can be acquired: first, by *discovering* new truths; second, by *rediscovering* the old truths. A nation that focuses on solely the new truths will never have peace and stability—it will be rocked by revolutions and counter-revolutions. On the other hand, a nation that is devoted solely to the old truths will also not fare well—its politics will become disconnected from the present as the politicians and the intellectuals will fall into clutches of the genie from the past, or the baggage of history; such a nation will face the risk of being ripp... more »

Rotten In Tunisia: The Corrupt Rule Of Ben Ali
He was the prototypical strong man softened by tactical reforms, blissfully ignorant before the fall, blown off in the violent winds of the Arab Spring. Having come to power in 1987 on the back of a coup against the 84-year-old Habib Bourguiba, whom he accused of senility, Zine al-Abidine Ben […]

Hell To Pay
Yesterday, Robin Sears warned that, out in the hinterland, there is palpable rage: My neighbours in northeastern Ontario are quick to vent their rage about all manner of foolish government regulations and about guns, opioids, and their children’s futures. Trudeau pounding on about women, climate and Indigenous Canadians are the angry backyard chat among our friends. They are not racists, but they are deeply angry about two things: no good jobs for their children unless they leave for the city, and being talked down to by smart aleck politicians. At the gas pump or the mall, they ... more »

Is An Armed Conflict Possible In Today's Europe?
Family members seek to identify their fallen relatives in Crimea in 1942. Dmitri Baltermants *Dirk Kurbjuweit, Spiegel Online*: *Is Armed Conflict Possible in Today's Europe?* Europe has been largely peaceful since the end of World War II. The shock of that conflict was simply too great. But with memories of the violence now fading and nationalism on the rise, it is far from certain that peace will remain the status quo. "The war changed everything." This statement by the late British historian Tony Judt contains the kernel of modern-day Europe. It was the war that made possible ... more »

DOES TRUMP WANT TO BE IMPEACHED?
In *Politico Magazine,* Michael Kruse tells us something we already know: When Donald Trump thinks a fight is over, he just starts another one. On July 24, as special counsel Robert Mueller’s uneven testimony came to a close, Donald Trump clearly was feeling triumphant. He gloated and goaded on Twitter. He stood outside the White House and crowed. Mueller had done “horrible” and “very poorly,” the president said on the South Lawn. He called it “a great day for me.” He was, after all, rid, it seemed, of perhaps his first term’s preeminent enemy. It took him less than 24 hours to flip... more »

*The Impossible Math of College Admissions* *Colleges say they want more low-income students. So why are they admitting so many wealthy ones? The NYT article excerpted below tries to answer that. And for most colleges the answer is simple. To meet their costs they need to charge high prices for their services and the children of poor families just cannot afford those prices. So to get poor students on campus colleges have to slash what they charge. But they can't do much of that or they would go broke. So for most colleges economic necessity dictates that only a small p... more »
Terrorism vs. Just War Theory
I was planning to write an original piece on this topic, but soon discovered that better work already existed. Most notably, here’s a summary of a talk Michael Walzer delivered in 2007. *Exposing Junk Climate Science* This twelve-minute video by Tony Heller of Real Climate Science, released just yesterday, does a great job of exposing the deceptive use of data on which climate alarmism depends. Heller begins with the National Climate Assessment that recently went out to journalists and policymakers. It included a set of charts and graphs that superficially seemed to support the claim that we are experiencing alarming changes in the Earth’s climate, as summed up in this graphic. Click to enlarge: One funny thing, though: One of these graphs begins in 1960, another i... more »

*The Idolatry of Environmental Extremism* David Limbaugh A bizarre incident at Union Theological Seminary illustrates why many Christians believe that internal forces, not external ones, represent the greatest threat to the church. Students at this seminary prayed to a collection of plants in its chapel, which triggered a raft of criticism on Twitter. The school defiantly defended its action in a series of tweets. “Today in chapel, we confessed to plants,” the school tweeted. “Together, we held our grief, joy, regret, hope, guilt and sorrow in prayer; offering them to the bein... more »
The NSA General Counsel's Proposal for a Moonshot
An air traffic control watch supervisor monitors the night skies at Aviano Air Base, Italy. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Austin Harvill/Released) National Security Agency (NSA) General Counsel Glenn Gerstell presented an interesting and surprising challenge last week, writing in the New York Times that the United States must be ready to face the “profound and enduring implications of the digital revolution.” The essay was interesting in that Gerstell’s writing was almost philosophical, rather than a direct call to action (not exactly a common mode of address for general ... more »

It shouldn’t be a hard concept to understand, but based on a lot of the messages and the comments I have received this week, it sounds like some of y’all need a little help… The United States was founded on the principle that citizens should have free speech, and they should be able to question their government. "When All Is Said And Done..."
"Scientists now know the brain receives 400 billion bits of information each second. To give you some idea of just how much information that is, consider this: It would take nearly 600,000 average-size books just to print 400 billion zeros. Needless to say, that's a heck of a lot of reality. So what do we do? We start screening. We start narrowing down. I'll take that bit of information over there, and let's see - this one fits nicely with my ongoing soap opera about the opposite sex. When all is said and done, we're down to 2,000 measly bits of information. Go ahead and take a bow... more »
