Women of the Word Bible Study at UALC

Women of the Word (WOW) Bible Study Today starts the Saturday group of WOW and I’m planning to attend. However, I’m also interested in the new knitting group that will be meeting first and third Saturdays, so after attending today perhaps that will be clarified. I attended the Saturday group for years, just because the group had some continuity, unlike the others that reassemble, mix and match, each new topic. About 5 years ago I got a little bored with the format (video, workbook, discussion, prayer), so I stopped attending. It still has the same leader, Mary Jo, so I think it’... more »

The War on Terror's Total Cost: $5,900,000,000,000

*Daniel R. DePetris* *Security, Middle East* And counting. The real question: Is America any safer? By any reasonable estimate, the monetary and human costs of the U.S.-led war on terrorism has been considerable. To the political scientists at Brown University, the numbers have been astronomical. The Ivy League university’s Cost of War Project calculates that Washington will spend approximately $5.9 trillion between FY2001-FY2019, a pot of money that includes over $2 trillion in overseas contingency operations, $924 billion in homeland security spending, and $353 billion in medic... more »

America’s P-47M Fighter Had One Goal: To Hunt Down and Kill Hitler's Jets

Sebastien Roblin at Test Feed Using Fields - 17 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Europe* A legend or a total bust? Pilots nicknamed early-model P-47 Thunderbolts the “Razorback,” a reference to the chunky fighter plane’s angular canopy. However, the name was more generally appropriate—like a wild boar, the hulking single-engine “Jug” was tough and hard-charging, and its eight .50 caliber machine guns packed a hell of a punch. Lugging underwing fuel tanks, Thunderbolts based in Britain could accompany four-engine B-17 and B-24 bombers of the 8th Air Force on dangerous raids deep over Nazi Germany—and still engage German fighters ... more »

But it paired this with an unorthodox roller-delay mechanism, internal hammer system, and extensive use of polymer. The resulting pistol didn’t see widespread adoption, but it was successful in niche roles and is considered to be very accurate. What drove H&K to make such an idiosyncratic pistol? What parts of its design can be seen in H&K’s handguns today? In the 1960s, H&K had a series of successful we... more »
