Four Reasons Charters Are A Bad Fit For Rural Communities
For just a moment, I'm going to set aside the larger problems of charters and privatization nationally. Charter advocates and education reformers have recently turned their attention to rural communities. Last summer, Mike Petrilli (Fordham Institute) unleashed one of his wide-release op-eds to point out the "problem" of "charter deserts"--those markets where charter schools have made few inroads. Andy Smarick and Mike McShane just released an entire volume of essays about rural education, and at the 74, Arielle Dreher published a thoughtful piece about one of the tensions inherent ... more »
What a density of fear man has drawn forth in his creative power!
133. *But* the chief impediment of government lies in the mechanical mixing of opposite principles; hence comes premature dissolution. Heart and communion with Hierarchy will tell where would be the combinable parts. Man is in need of equilibrium of mind and heart. Cooperation is confirmation of equilibrium. 246. Cooperation lies in mutual solicitude and hearty labor. 248. It is tedious to listen to babblings which lack the heart quality. -M: *Fiery World 1934* ……………………………………………………………………………............................ more »
"Eventually You Understand..."
"That's where it all begins. That's where we all get screwed big time as we grow up. They tell us to think, but they don't really mean it. They only want us to think within the boundaries they define. The moment you start thinking for yourself- really thinking- so many things stop making any sense. And if you keep thinking, the whole world just falls apart. Nothing makes sense anymore. All rules, traditions, expectations- they all start looking so fake, so made up. You want to just get rid of all this stuff and make things right. But the moment you say it, they tell you to shut up a...more »
Belated Observations
When this blog was a mere twinkle in the eye, Craig and I got stuck over what to call it. We wanted to have the words “BBC” and “bias” in there, but as someone once said somewhere online, the “Biased-BBC” blog had already bagged the best name ever. Also, we wanted the title to sound less strident than “Biased-BBC” to imply that there was at least some room for doubt. We decided on a question rather than a statement, hoping it would encourage debate rather than produce a straightforward litany of anti-BBC ‘gotchas’. However, that was then and this is now. It’s now more or less a give... more »

Everything is Living: Nurturing Growth in the Cracks of Capitalism
I struggle over how to start this essay. I want to write about how everything is alive and how I discovered that for myself growing up in a small town in southern New Hampshire, on the North American continent, which is land that is not mine but in fact, I am it’s. I want to write about how universal this childhood discovery is, but I can’t. Because that’s a lie. Tired puppy
It's been a long week. I've been going through our pantry and reserve food supplies, checking the expiry dates of everything, discarding what's too long expired, and buying new stocks to replace what we've used up. It's been a busy time, and my back's letting me know it didn't appreciate all the standing, bending, lifting, and packing that's been going on. Still, it's almost done now. Our two pantry cupboards are pretty well organized, a box of long-out-of-date food has been trashed, another box of still-within-usable-date food is ready to go to the food pantry, and several hea... more »
New York Times Freaks: Hypes Absolutely Insane FBI Allegation that Trump Committed Treason when He Fired Comey
*The New York Times of Saturday,* January 12th, blared the headline, in oversized type: “FBI Opened Inquiry Into Whether Trump Was Secretly Working on Behalf of Russia.” A closer look reveals that the Times plagiarized this article largely from the Epoch Times, the Fulan Gong’s anti-China newspaper. Epoch Times had been leaked the transcript of former FBI Attorney Lisa Page’s June, 2018 testimony to the Congress. According to both the Times and the anti-China rag, when Trump fired James Comey, the top levels of the FBI, who had thoroughly imbibed British intelligence Kool-Aide abo... more »
Part II: The Integrity Initiative's Foreign Agents of Influence Invade the United States
*by Barbara Boyd, barbara@lpac-organizers.com* On November 23, 2018, a group calling itself “Anonymous” posted actual documents from the Integrity Initiative, a rapid-response black-propaganda information-warfare operation targeting Russia, China, Western Europe, and the United States. Since that initial posting, there have been three other document dumps concerning the Initiative, the last on January 4. These documents reveal the “boots on the ground” so to speak, for the cyberspace and black propaganda policies otherwise alluded to in the sanitized diplo-speak of the December 18... more »

Trump Ruins Xenophobia For Everybody
That's the gist of a *New York Times* "news analysis" published on Saturday. But now Donald Trump's Wall is diverting the desired official discourse away from all those other harsh methods of keeping people out and disposing of them. Revolving Doors and Conflicts of Interests
Revolving doors occur as industry officials move into government and as connected government officials move into industry, corrupting government purpose. Revolving doors are problematic because of "conflicts of interests" between (1) public goods and organizational missions on the one hand and (2) personal or sectional self-interest on the other hand. Conflicts of interest are found most visibly in revolving door relationships that are at least transparent in the sense that they can usually be traced in employment records. What is less transparent is the conflict of interests tha... more »

End Mis-Direction - A Poem by M.N. Hopkins
*End mis-direction* *Fight for family and friends* *Protect what is ours* *© 2019 M.N. Hopkins* *Note: **I wrote this poem while watching a movie called, SGT. Will Gardner. I can recommend a view. Many Vets. suffer under this system of corporate wars. Once they are no longer useful to the global greed machine they are disposed of and many end up homeland and unloved. In the early days of our Land we had militias meant to defend and protect an infant nation from outside powers. Now, we send out military out to protect global forces who seek to destroy our Union... more »

Coach Tyler’s exercises for thighs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jqu8ZsyWbA&feature=youtu.be What a terrible thing to get in my e-mail first thing in the day! Our legs have more estrogen receptors, he says. This stops fat from burning. Supposedly, after menopause, that decreases—didn’t happen for me! What I like about his videos is he always explains what NOT to do with toes or back to prevent injury, very important at my age. This one is only about 8 minutes. I know YOU don’t need this, but if I don’t put it in my blog, I’ll never find it!
The President isn’t going to Davos, and the Democrats have gone home refusing to budge on our safety
President Donald Trump remains at the White House this weekend, saying he is ready, willing, and able to negotiate the end to the government’s partial shutdown, which we on the right call the Schumer Shutdown, and the need for border security. Many members of Congress, however, have returned to their home states. Meanwhile, about 800,000 non-essential government workers didn’t get their paycheck yesterday. TSA is just part of a security plan—but Democrats think it’s OK for aliens, tourists, job seekers, drug lords and human traffickers to walk across our borders and no one to c... more »

Meet the First Russian Submarine To Fire in Anger Since World War II (And Its New Cruise Missiles)
*Mark Episkopos* *Security, * Rostov-on-Don, or B-237, is a modernized Kilo-class attack submarine. The second of eight units commissioned as part of a series called “Project 636.6,” Rostov-on-Don boasts across-the-board iterative improvements over the original Soviet Kilo-class line. On December 8, 2015, a submerged Russian submarine launched a missile barrage at a Syrian rebel “citadel.” The ensuing press statement from Russia’s Ministry of Defense was nothing short of triumphant: "Several Kalibr submarine-based cruise missiles were launched in salvo by the *Rostov-on-Do*n sub... more »
Introducing Heckler & Koch Mark 23 Gun: Here's Why It Failed
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * The resulting pistol, as innovative and well engineered as it was, was a flop. In the 1990s, the US Special Operations Command wanted an offensive handgun. Most handguns then issued to the military were intended to be defensive weapons for when a primary weapon, a rifle or other long gun, was out of action. The offensive handgun, on the other hand, was envisioned as a weapon that could as a primary weapon for special purposes, such as silently eliminating sentries. To best accomplish those tasks, the project, called Offensive Handgun Weapon System (OH... more »

I Re-Editted Yesterday's Politico Hit Piece On Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez So It Makes More Sense
For politics junkies, yesterday started with a pre-dawn Rachael Bade/Heather Caygle click magnetic piece at *Politico*, Exasperated Democrats try to rein in Ocasio-Cortez. One of my former jobs was editor of *Alternative Rock*, one of America's first punk zines. I was also the west coast editor of *Country Music Magazine* at one point. So I decided to re-edit the *Politico* piece for them-- really for my own amusement... but, hey; it's Saturday! Let me begin, though, with a couple of questions and a comment Ro Khanna gave me: "What happened to the classical liberals-- those who be... more »

Five Proofs of the Existence of God
The ultimate philosophical problem is the problem of God. Does he exist? If he does, then what is his nature? Is he the ultimate cause of everything? In the last 2500 years, several important philosophers have philosophized on who or what is God and how his existence can be proved. Today I started reading Edward Feser’s *Five Proofs of the Existence of God*. This book offers a defense of the five philosophical proofs of God’s existence: the Aristotelian proof, the Neo-Platonic proof, the Augustinian proof, the Thomistic proof, and the Rationalist proof. In the book’s Introduction, ... more »
Denby Deegan, one of the first Native American architects in US, walks on
The legacy of Denby Deegan, one of the first Native American architects in the United States and North Dakota, lives on in his architectural work. Deegan, of White Shield, died Dec. 24, 2018, in Bismarck at the age of 77. Deegan was one of the first Native American architects in the United States and in North Dakota, according to the American Indian Council of Architects and Engineers. He also was one of the founding members of AICAE based in Albuquerque, N.M. In the early 1970s, fewer than 30 American Indian architects and 15 engineers could be identified throughout the U.S. A smal... more »

Financial stability in hard times
I wrote recently about the problem of living paycheck to paycheck. (Comments on that post are also worth reading.) Today, we're seeing complaints from many Federal workers that they don't know how they're going to cope with the lack of a paycheck during the current government shutdown. I know several younger people who are currently living at home with their parents, because they can't afford to live on their own . . . but all of them have recent-generation smartphones, and buy clothes at fashionable stores, and eat out with their friends several times a week. Very few of them ... more »
