“Shiny NGC 253 is one of the brightest spiral galaxies visible, and also one of the dustiest. Some call it the Silver Dollar Galaxy for its appearance in small telescopes, or just the Sculptor Galaxy for its location within the boundaries of the southern constellation Sculptor. The Poet: Mary Oliver, "The Poet Dreams of the Mountain"
*"The Poet Dreams of the Mountain"* by Mary Oliver "Sometimes I grow weary of the days with all their fits and starts. I want to climb some old grey mountain, slowly, taking the rest of my life to do it, resting often, sleeping under the pines or, above them, on the unclothed rocks. I want to see how many stars are still in the sky that we have smothered for years now, forgiving it all, and peaceful, knowing the last thing there is to know. All that urgency! Not what the earth is about! How silent the trees, their poetry being of themselves only. I want to take slow steps, and think appr... more »
"What Will We Talk About Today, You and I?"
A Comment: Long time readers know there is zero tolerance for racism and bigotry here. This article contains the vile "N" word, which you will never see here again, expressed repeatedly by the articles author. In their book "Cobra II," Michael R. Gordon and Gen. Bernard E. Trainor offer this ugly comment from a senior officer of the US Army's 4th Infantry Division: "The only thing these sand niggers understand is force and I'm about to introduce them to it." While not admitted publicly, that term is widely used within the American military, along with "ragheads", "jihadis" and other... more »

McHugh's "Surgical Sex" Revisited
In which Dr Paul McHugh's 2004 article Surgical Sex is rebutted by.... Dr Paul McHugh's 2004 article *Surgical Sex.* Why did Johns Hopkins stop performing sex reassignment surgery? The obvious reason is that their surgeon left, and wasn't replaced. They now refer patients to other surgeons after assessing suitability. The surgery is now no longer a "research" effort, but part of mainstream medical practice. But there's more to it than that. The Meyer study McHugh commissioned in support of his pre-determined aim, and used as the primary evidential basis for the conclusions in *Surgic... more »

“Taking A Break From What You Are Doing”
*“Taking A Break From What You Are Doing”* by The DailyOM “Sometimes finding the answer is as easy as taking a break and stepping back from the situation. Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in our thoughts that we wind up going round in round in circles, finding it difficult to concentrate on things and, because we are so distracted, not really accomplishing much. There may be signals—mental, emotional, and physical—that tell us we need to slow down and relax. Since we are so involved in things that are external to us, however, we may easily overlook what is really going on inside ... more »

*Ya gotta laugh at the latest excitement from NOAA* *Big news: NOAA has used newly fiddled data from many locations to row back what they told the IPCC -- so they can now claim that there has been no warming slowdown in recent years. But they might as well not have bothered. *Chicken and Egg* This bird flu controversy has been going on for decades now and frankly, I'm getting sick of it. June 1-3 2015 emissions appeared lower when I viewed the cams compared to the period right around the earthquake at the end of May 2015. The 8.5 May 30, 2015 earthquake on Japan's east coast, which was felt widely in Japan, seemed to have shaken things up enough to produce the pink (gamma?) shine visible on the morning of May 31, 2015. This morning I've been looking at recently publications on atmospheric dispersion from the Fukushima accident. None of the studies I've...more »
Poroshenko for the Peace Prize
*The Once Illustrious Nobel Prize* Putin has often mused how everything his "colleagues" and "partners" in the US touches--turns into ratshit (a loose translation :) . The US is a kind of reverse King Midas. That's what the prize has become..*.just a cabalistic slap in the face to humanity.* Nothing more illustrates this contention than the recent revelations of the behi... more »

Islamic State's English-Language Radio Broadcast Sounds Like NPR

Election 12, JV Bautista and Toilet Politics

Economic System Transformation
I am at the airport heading to Claremont, California for a conference called Seizing an Alternative: Toward an Ecological Civilization. I will be one of the presenters in a section entitled "Economic System Transformation". I will be talking about converting the military industrial endless war machine into the "Natural Guard" that can help with disaster relief due to severe weather as a result of global climate change. I'll also call for the transformation of the military production system to one that builds rail, solar, wind, and tidal power systems. Seems like a no brainer to... more »

At the same time, Iranians are heading west for Anbar where the effort to retake Ramadi from the Islamic State is now being led by the Hashd many of which are supported by Iran. The Physical Theory of the Afterlife

There are many separate reports, many fanciful, from those with no firsthand knowledge and many sparse reports from those who are granted only a glimpse.I have had a glimpse at least and enough direct confirmation to be sure of my data. The good news is that we live in an age in which the spirit world is actively passing detailed information to us and clarifying it for us if we are prepared to investigate. The information is now out there in far bette... more »
IObama’s Secret Trade Deal
Right now this trade agreement smells like a corporate agenda pretending to be free trade. That is not a free trade agreement but a treaty of convenience that will cause no end of problems for lack of free trade flexibility. I have to thank one of my readers for this beauty. Suddenly we have an elf that could easily have mixed with humans on a regular basis. Of course, that now suggests an elaborate hoax as well simply because it is too good to be true. Thus we have two real options. There really are elves living on the periphery of human existence with some human genetic content plausibly linked to progenitors of humanity and those cultural sources had real models as well. Alternately, a skilled artist asked the obvious question. Just what would such a skull look like? Without the specimen i... more »
Baltimore: A Legacy of Failed State Experiments
We have all been watching the slow unfolding of events in Baltimore but this all comes back to a far bigger problem. we have allowed the Police everywhere pick up the arms and systems developed for the military and then deployed them with a fraction of the training we demand of the military. The most important part of military training happens to be the hours spent doing drill. I see scant evidence that that remains the case in the USA for far too many police men. Otherwise men act on impulse in a stress situation. That is no good. At the same time drill training also need... more »

Genetic study of Chilcotin’s Wild Horses Finds Surprising Links to Siberia
A little unexpected and also a lucky find. Yet it is not surprising either. The Chilcotin is a huge land of forests and bitter cold weather that has not attracted serious settlement beyond ranching. Importing or buying a Siberian pony herd make just too much sense and someone obviously did and they ran wild and interbred with the also well adapted Canadian horse. It may have been done deliberately but it would have made little difference. Since they are wild, I expect that the herds will grow to a serious size if not already. They live in a green ocean that can easily hide mil... more »

Morgan Freeman Destroys The Argument Against Marijuana Legalization
Right now we really need much more science to allow us to advise on usage. In the meantime the news is all good. I became an advocate back in 2007 after i had read the literature. Mind Control Through Emotional Domination

Even the bottom two thirds is quickly losing interest in the crisis of the moment. To blame all this on a conspiracy is completely unnecessary. Activating Your Divine Blueprint Of Awakening

Most effort has been around meditation, yet also focusing on accepting the rational consequences of success in meditation can surely lead to success in such meditation as well. this lists five useful templates to be repeated and focused upon. This is little different than the repetition of prayer as actively taught by churches generally. What it brings to light though is that few understand the intent of prayer and meditation. Healthy Soups Boil down to Big Business
It is really more than that. It happens to be an effective way to store huge amounts of food through freezing. In practice the better the quality produced, the better it all behaves when frozen. All this points to a real opportunity. As we enter the age of organic farming we will produce huge amounts what is properly seconds. That is perfectly fine food that cannot be sold. Converting all that into boiled product solves the storage problem in the form of soups, stews and curries. Better yet there is a natural market that demands high quality and good taste and that is the... more »

Dr Sircus pulls all the work together for us in this piece. The real take home for all of us is that monitoring our ph levels daily is an excellent practice for two excellent reasons. [image: http://www.wakingtimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Astrology1.jpg] The very reasonable assumption made by every scientist, myself included, understood Astrology to be an early doctrine inspired by natural astronomy and perhaps visionary inputs. There is no expectation of anything profoundly foundational to be found in an apparently empirical construct With our new comprehension of the advanced engineering that was deployed in order to produce the Earth and the moon both and the knowledge that an advanced race of guides or teachers assisted us during the Bronze Age i... more »
BM 11 DNA as a Message.
It is possible that the DNA has all sorts of information, but i am not so sure. What i do think it does have is a library of useful options that work in terms of organics that we have barely begun to even tap let alone understand. If an internal mathematica happens to exist, i suspect that it is organized around a quaternary logic at least rather than a binary logic. All this will be suitable for chemistry. The more interesting question is whether these molecules also contain photonic processors. it is there were i expect to find a mass of useful data and we are a long w... more »
Pasteurized Milk Speeds Death but Yogurt and Cheese Benefit Health
Out of the blue we have a home run. I have been reading material that discourages the use of milk forever and i naturally assumed that this extended to cheese and yogurt. Why would i not? Yet for all my adult life i have consumed little milk unless it was in the form of cheese or yogurt. worse, i really do not wish to give up cheese in my general diet becasue i use it as a meat replacement. So this happens to be wonderful news for myself personally. I just could not give up cheese and now i do not have to. This is also the best possible news for the dairy industry generall... more »
Link Between Two Main Life-Forms
A rather unusual discovery and likely the beginning of more as well. It opens a new book on this whole field and must be suggestive. At least we now know that they were connected then and even that was open to debate without this example. It is a pleasing result and adds anther confirmed node to the tree on life. All good. . *Discovery of 'missing link' between the two main life-forms on Earth could explain evolution of animals, say scientists * *'We’ve identified an organism that seems to represent a very distant cousin of ours and in doing so it tells us... more »

"Is Life Embedded in the Cosmos?"
"Is Life Embedded in the Cosmos?" by Luke McKinney . "A recent mathematical analysis* says that life as we know it is written into the laws of reality. DNA is built from a set of twenty amino acids - the first ten of those can create simple prebiotic life, and now it seems that those ten are thermodynamically destined to occur wherever they can. For those unfamiliar with thermodynamics, it's the Big Brother of all energy equations and science itself. You can apply quantum mechanics at certain scales, and Newtonian mechanics work at the right speeds, but if Thermodynamics says somethi...more »

A splendid achievement of which that nation must be very proud. I'm proud too, for humankind. Seward recommended that Lincoln conclude with conciliatory words, and sketched out a few sentences for Lincoln to consider. *"If Only- Locating The Underlying Cause"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "Once you’ve taken the time to inquire within, you can begin to make changes that address the deeper issue. Often, when we’re unhappy, we fall into the habit of thinking that, if only one or two particular things in our life would change, everything would be fine. We might focus on the fact that we need a new car, or a raise, or a change in our living situation. We dwell on this one thing and strategize, or complain, or daydream about what it would be like to have it. Meanwhile, underneath the surface, the rea... more »

I'm not talking about the people who used to risk everything going over the Berlin Wall to freedom, or those Cubans who in a bid for freedom brave shark-infested seas on inner tubes ... I'm talking about most people in most modern democracies who have happily traded their liberty for a little temporary security, and in most cases have ended up with neither. Excising Critical Thought Via McDonaldization of Education
The Washington Post imagines a dystopic future where only the elite are educated while the children of the masses are taught a pre-given curriculum, that no doubt would be purged of truths unrelated to efficiency and compliance: "At some point, it’s possible to imagine a scenario where the top, highest-paid human talent migrates to the nation’s most elite universities, while robots take over the teaching and training of students in community colleges or vocational schools, where most of the emphasis is on learning certain very specific skill
