Time to say Goodbye

Small Footprints at Reduce Footprints - 1 hour ago
Recently, writers of several television programs have announced the end of the series. When asked why, they replied that "it was time". That is how I feel about Reduce Footprints ... it's time for me to end the series. It's been a terrific run. Since 2008, generous readers have shared their knowledge and experiences with me. In turn, I've tried to research various issues and open them up for discussion. Together we've done our best to live a green life and encourage others to do the same. We have much to be proud of. While there is, and will always be, more to say about the envir... more »

Talking intellectual property

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 hour ago
It's long and it's not perfect, but this interview with occasional NOT PC guest poster Dale Halling is a fascinating ramble around some of the thornier and least understood elements of patent law, copyright and the validity of intellectual property -- the key to which (as with all property) is not whether or not something tangible is produced, but *whether or not a new value is brought into the world*... *“The Dark Side of Goal-Setting”* by PsyBlog “I wouldn't be surprised if you are fed up with hearing about goal-setting. I am. Goal-setting has become a personal, corporate and political fetish. Modern workers are frequently subjected to performance reviews in which they must set themselves goals to work towards. The fact that these targets are frequently idiotic or meaningless seems to be irrelevant. Whole countries are now run on targets. 10YearsAgo: Free trade makes strange bedfellows

Somebody reminded me over the weekend that I've been blogging for over ten years now -- which is sort of sad, and also sort of an achievement. The strange thing in all that time is that while names and faces change, the arguments are often the same old arguments. Consider this post from out of the archives, from ten years ago this week ... No Right Turn is more eloquent than Rod Donald when it comes to arguing against Helen Clark's free trade deal with China: As for the wider issue of whether we should be pursuing free trade with a totalitarian shithole like China, the rest of Clark'... more »

[image: Dassault Rafale M]Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar confirmed on Sunday that India will only purchase 36 instead of 126 Rafale fighter jets from France, an announcement that appears to finally bury the much hyped “mother of all defense deals” for good. The 126 Rafale aircraft are “way too expensive” and “economically unviable and not required,” the defense minister told local press over the weekend. Purchasing the fighters would have been “a very steep slope to climb financially (…) we are not buying the rest. We are only buying the … 36,” Parrikar added. Yet India c... more »

S. Korea, U.S. start joint anti-submarine naval drill

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 22 hours ago
[image: Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong]South Korea and the United States have staged a joint anti-submarine naval drill to tackle North Korea's threats, sparked by the North's test-firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile, the Navy said Monday. The two allies kicked off the largest-ever combined anti-submarine exercise Saturday that will run through Wednesday in waters off South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju. "The drill is aimed at deterring submarine-related provocations and beefing up the Navy's capacity to protect a southern maritime pathway, a key factor in maintaining ... more »

ASC ‘not the only option’ for building Future Submarines

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 22 hours ago
[image: ASC]Defence chiefs told Estimates that though ASC has the pre-eminent workforce now, it might not be right for a newly designed submarine. They also conceded the Government could override the results of the competitive evaluation process and pick a different international partner. Estimates also heard that the $10 billion Future Frigates could be built offshore rather than in SA and that there are delays affecting the $10 billion LAND 400 project — which SA is competing against Victoria to win. Navy Alert to Chinese Nuclear Submarine Threat in Indian Ocean

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 22 hours ago
[image: Type 093 (Shang) class SSN]Convinced that the presence of a Chinese nuclear powered attack submarine in the Indian Ocean in the last few months is part of a carefully choreographed exercise to expand its military presence in the region, senior Navy Officers have told NDTV that they don't accept the assertion that China's submarine deployment has been in aid of the anti-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia. Navy Sources have told NDTV that while no Chinese nuclear submarine has been actively tracked trying to probe India's territorial waters, there is a recognition that a ... more »

Is Now The Time To 'Kick ISIS's Ass'?

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
Rodi Said/Reuters *Dean Obeidallah, Daily Beast:* *It's Time to Send in the Troops to Kick ISIS’s Ass* *I don’t want to sound like a neocon, and troops aren’t the only answer. But enough’s enough. People need help that only we can provide.* *ISIS is truly winning. It’s that simple. And unless we change our approach, they will continue to take more land, grow in recruits, and slaughter more people, especially Muslims, on a daily basis.* *That’s not just my sentiment, but also the view of Laith Alkhouri, a NBC News counterterrorism expert and director of research and analysis for th... more »

Guest Post - Comparing the renewable energy markets in the UK and US

Small Footprints at Reduce Footprints - 1 day ago
In the UK renewable energy appears to be progressing in leaps and bounds. In the beautiful countryside solar farms are popping up on an almost weekly basis. Companies are embracing the need for and cost efficiency of renewable technology. The European Union Renewable Energy Directive has pushed Europe to making 20% of all its energy consumption from renewables by 2020. But how fair things across the pond? And are the renewable energy appetites being shared between the US and UK? With these questions in mind I thought I’d delve a little into renewable energy progress in the UK and ...more »

"Mad Max": The New Dark Ages Are Here

Manifesto Joe at Manifesto Joe's Texas Blues - 1 day ago
By Manifesto Joe I went to the new "Mad Max: Fury Road" movie expecting a masterpiece. It got a 98% "fresh" rating from the Rotten Tomatoes critics, and was shot by the same director who popularized the franchise, the same Australian director (George Miller) who directed "The Road Warrior (1981)," which was indeed a masterpiece. I have never been more disappointed by a film in my entire life, and I've seen one hell of a lot of movies. It was a mediocre action film, very light on story and very heavy on fiery crashes and vehicle chases. When a movie like this can get that kind of ra... more »

Wall Street vs Main Street, 1896

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller and JP Morgan helped steal the 1896 presidential election for Wall Street's dedicated servant, Ohio Governor William McKinley. Democrat William Jennings Bryan-- "the Great Commoner"-- was, in many ways, his day's Bernie Sanders. Bryan vowed to put the predatory oligarchs behind bars if he won. 90% of the eligible voters turned out. Industrialists told their workers not to show up for work if Bryan won. Bryan won rural areas, including the entire South and most of the West-- 22 states to McKinley's 23. The History Channel account above, should loo... more »
