Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb
Beloved is in charge of the rhubarb; we have seven plants, six of which are descended from the first, which is over fifteen years old. One digs in the fall or winter to expose the root mass, split it in two, then dig out one of the halves as best one can. It's a muddy job usually, but one is rewarded by the sight of the exposed interior of the taproot, a very unwintry bright orange. We make a point of giving away some halves from time to time and many of our friends have clones of Stony Run rhubarb, which might be related to Victoria, we aren't sure. It's very sweet and makes succ... more »

Short on Cash, “Poor Americans Ending Up in Modern-Day Debtors’ Prison” Over Traffic Fines
Mac Slavo For ages, those who were too poverty-stricken to pay judgments and other outstanding debts were locked up, and forced to work it off under prison labor, along with the cost of incarceration. The 14th Amendment strengthened equal protection under law, that is until recent decades. With new found economic pressures and plenty of new fines and offenses, debtors’ prisons are back. In the Belly of the Beast: Called For Jury Duty
This is a bit off the beaten track but since Easter Sunday is generally a pretty slow news day I thought that I’d write about it as a general observation on the judicial system. Believe it or not I am in my early fifties and had never once been called upon to do jury duty until just recently. So on Thursday morning I headed over to my local courthouse, an opulent palace that was given to the forces of law enforcement courtesy of the taxpayers and prepared to suffer through my state enforced civic responsibility. mcdonald's announces phony wage increase: workers rising on april 15
The resurgent workers' movement scored a huge victory earlier this year, when Walmart announced it was raising wages - a step on the road to a true living wage and the right to unionize without fear of harassment. Other big corporations, such as Target, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls, followed with similar wage-hike announcements. Naturally, it sounded like another important victory when McDonald's announced it was raising wages to $10/hour... until we read the fine print. On Wednesday, McDonald's followed the lead of fellow low-wage employer Walmart, announcing a small raise that puts its... more »

*Church schools must not select on the basis of faith because it discriminates against the poor, warn vicars* *Christian schools shouldn't choose Christians?* Church of England schools should stop selecting pupils on faith because it discriminates against the poor, a group of vicars has claimed. They say the system is open to abuse and many oversubscribed schools reject non-churchgoing families even though they may live nearby. Many Christian schools give priority to families who regularly attend services, a practice which they say preserves their faith ethos. But the clergymen s... more »
The Cybersecurity Bill CISA: Big Brother Just Got Bigger
Ted Baumann Yesterday I fell for an April Fools’ joke for the first time (that I can remember, at least). A blog post, ostensibly from Georgia Tech, announced a new program to award credit to students who use their smartphones while logged on to the campus Wi-Fi system. “Every website visit, post, tweet, photo, and yes, even yaks are available and tied to a user,” it said. “Grades are assigned using machine learning that has been trained to recognize intellectually valid content. The student receives a monthly report of their progress. The more they use the Internet, the faster ... more »

*"Damning study" not so damning?* It is always amusing to find new assertions by Warmists and proceed to rebut them. There is an angry post here on a Warmist site that runs true to form. It purports to find fault with skeptical reports of findings by Prof. Bjorn Stevens of the Max Planck Institute -- findings that I also have drawn attention to. I headed yesterday's posts with a brief mention of them. It features a carefully-worded letter from Stevens himself denying that his findings have adverse implications for the global warming scare. So his letter drew attention to o... more »

Jake Anderson The next time you take a trip to the mall, make sure you give those mannequins a big smile. The surveillance industry’s latest recruit—joining the ranks of the Statue of Liberty, vending machines, Kinect, and a litany of other seemingly innocuous retail products—is store mannequins. The $245 billion dollar luxury goods industry currently avails itself of five companies in Europe and the U.S. that use the EyeSee polystyrene frame mannequins, whose eyes are equipped with police grade face-recognition cameras. Italian mannequin maker Almax SpA supplies these bionic odd... more »

Martha Mitchell article (part 1)Why Was Martha Mitchell Kidnapped?part Iby Mae Brussell, from *The Realist *August 1972 ------------------------------ My research on political assassinations, election manipulations and clandestine government is not political. Democrats as well as republicans contribute to murdering and concealing their crimes. Are They Arming for Riots Across America? Homeland Stockpiling “Less Lethal Specialty Munitions”
Mac Slavo One of the biggest stories for years in the alternative media was the mysterious and foreboding purchase by Homeland Security of more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. Thanks to coverage on prominent sites like Drudge Report, the story reached into mainstream media, prompting official spin and downplaying of the purchase. Now, a new Homeland Security purchase order listed on FedBizOpps also raises an eyebrow or two, given the heated and divided political and social climate at hand. Just look at what happened in Ferguson… A request for “less lethal specialty munit... more »

Sorry, Your Partisan Slip is Showing
We know that the House public safety committee has been 'studying' the government's anti-terror bill and that despite the long list of influential and knowledgeable people wishing to speak to the dangers of this bill to our freedoms and privacy the list of those permitted to participate was severely restricted. We also know that throughout the process the Conservative members routinely defended the bill as written and showed no interest in amendments proposed by various presenters. They even *deliberately blocked the Leader of the Green Party,* who later was permitted to present but... more »
Kathy Kelly: Imprisoned for Peace
"War is Peace" - Anthony Freda Art Henry L. Racicot I’ve been appalled my entire adult life by American militarism, and especially so in the post-9/11 era. The unholy violence of American "foreign policy" not only strikes me as unjustifiable in its victimization of the *others*, but irrational, as well. For example, Americans were told by the Bush administration the overthrow of Saddam Hussein would prevent Iraq from becoming a safe haven for terrorists, yet the results of America’s brutal military intervention, combined with an incoherent post-Saddam political strategy, produce... more »
The Truth Is It's A Lie
http://www.thesleuthjournal.com/ After Joe Oliver announced his budget date this week, he pivoted immediately to an attack on the Liberals, implying that they did not have what he had -- "a plan and the discipline to follow it." That was rich. Stephen Maher writes: He warned voters of Opposition plans for “a debt burden our children should not bear.” He bragged Canada’s debt is half that of the Group of Seven average, adding, “There’s a moral issue here, because to the extent we pile on more debt, we’re basically asking our children a...more »

Star Wars: India set to test missile defence shield
[image: Advanced Air Defence (AAD) system]On Sunday or Monday, in Chandipur, Odisha, the Defence R&D Organisation (DRDO) will test-fire an interceptor missile, whose task is to hit an incoming ballistic missile target, in this case a Prithvi missile fired a few minutes earlier. The test is akin to striking a bullet with a bullet. This will be DRDO's latest test towards developing an anti-ballistic missile (ABM) shield, to protect Indian targets against nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles fired from Pakistan or China. In 2011, former DRDO chief Avinash Chander had told Business Standar... more »

PLA has spent 10 years to build a blue-water navy: US expert
[image: Type 054A FFG]Christopher Sharman, a former US assistant navy attache to Beijing and a student at National Defense University, discussed the five major steps China has taken to establish a global navy since 2004 in his new article written for the Washington-based National Interest magazine. Between 2004 and 2006, the People's Liberation Army Navy kept itself within the region known as the First Island Chain in the Pacific, extending from Alaska to the Philippines, to avoid direct confrontation with the United States and its security partners. But the PLA Navy enhanced trai... more »
Bang goes the no claims! Royal Navy nuclear submarine suffers £500,000 damage after 'hitting floating ice' while tracking Russian vessels
[image: HMS Talent (S92)]A British nuclear submarine suffered £500,000 damage in a collision while tracking Russian vessels, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. The 5,300-ton HMS Talent limped back to port with a huge dent and will be out of action for several months. Royal Navy top brass are investigating the incident. Last night, defence officials refused to disclose exact details of the crash – including where or when it happened – but they were adamant that HMS Talent struck ‘floating ice’ rather than a Russian sub. *Alleluia * St. John Chrysostom: Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hell when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, "You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below." Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and disco... more »

TV Watch: Seasonal notes -- "Better Call Saul," "The Middle," and of course "Mad Men"

In this corner, the next-to-last episode of Season 1 of Better Call Saul registered as a "wow!"* *by Ken* There's been an inordinate amount of crap to wade through on the TV scene, but also some oases. The Origins of Easter - Ostara
This article is best read in connection with two of the previous articles exposing the Heathen roots of Christianity: The first article looked at the general theft of Heathen ideas by what became the Church of Rome http://newsfromatlantis.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/christianity-pagan-religion.html ; The second looked specifically at the festival which the Judaised Roman Empire made into Christmas http://newsfromatlantis.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/happy-saturnalia-for-return-to-golden.html Now it is the festival of 'Easter', and so it is once again time to turn the spotlight on the expropria... more »
