Cornell study in PNAS: women STEM faculty are 2-to-1 overrepresented

Steven Pinker called it a shocker of a study but I am not surprised at all. The results coming from the paper I will discuss pretty much agree with my estimates based on the insider knowledge of similar mechanisms. Wendy Williams and Stephen Ceci (Cornell) just published a paper in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences. The title is National hiring experiments reveal 2:1 faculty preference for women on STEM tenure track (click for full PDF) Lots of fictitious male and female applications were sent to 873 places where they hire tenure-track faculty. As well as being a pretty weird general election, 2015's will see a record number of far left candidates standing. As if to underline the peculiarity of the campaign, *even anarchists are standing*. So let's have a bit of a burrow into the lists then and see what it says about the far left party family. It's an article by Paul Bennett of the coalition to save our rural schools. Paul, though more conservative than I think respectable people should be, has spent his life in education, and knows far better than most what it's all about. He tears apart the government's claim of savings by closing the schools, points out the very damaging results of closing them, and points out that the process is a farce of democracy. Good stuff. Few Americans understand the reasons for European Sovereign Debt Crisis. The "Troika" consisting of the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monitary Fund (IMF) decide to make loans to economically failing EU member countries in the full knowledge that countries like Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal cannot possibly pay them off. Why would they do that? Well you have to know how it works. The IMF immediately takes the promised loans and uses them to pay off the creditors. Then the IMF requires that the people of those countries pay the IMF back every red cent by taking additional cuts in their salaries and pensions and requiring their government to sell off services such as water and electricity to foreigners who will raise the prices. How to escape starvation? Why resign from the European Union and default on all current loans! Of course, they would still need loans. But they would need to be long term so that those loans can be paid back after they are first used to improve their economies. Who would grant them such loans? Why Russia, China, and the BRICS!

WHAT THE HELL? "Maple Resolve" - Huge Drill In Canada Starts April 20th, More Troops Involved Than Jade Helm In The United States!

Everyone in the alternative media has been made aware of the upcoming operational "drills" happening in the United States under the name "Jade Helm". There have been those that have proclaiming that these drills could be both a test and the prelude to when the US Government imposes their planned Martial Law across America. It is also surprising that most of the American sheep are totally unaware of these drills taking place in what is supposed to be a "free" nation! BUT I caught something important today at the Investment Watch Blog website, at www.investmentwatchblog.com that ... more »

Late in 1997, Enya, one of the most enigmatic-- and successful-- artists on the record label I ran, delivered a new album, *Paint The Sky With Stars*, a greatest hits compilation with two previously unreleased songs. It was a Christmas smash that year, with over 12 million album sales worldwide, 4 million in the U.S. alone. Enya isn't exactly a household name-- but she's sold far more albums than many artists who "seem" to be better known-- 75 million worldwide and close to 27 million in the U.S. Four of her albums won Grammy awards and one of her songs was nominated for an Oscar.... more »

Kurdistan Democratic Party Attempts To Maintain Control Over Yazidis In Iraq’s Ninewa

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 14 hours ago
At the start of April 2015 the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) arrested Haider Sesho, the head of the Sinjar Protection Unit (HPS). The official reason for his detention was that he created an illegal militia that was not under peshmerga control. Further statements by Kurdish officials including President Massoud Barzani showed that the KDP was also concerned that Sesho was working with Baghdad rather than it. Sinjar remains largely under Islamic State (IS) control, and the HPS was one of the few groups in the area fighting them. The KDP’s actions showed that it was more interest... more »

Ontario Goes Cap in Trade

A carbon tax seems like a far more sensible solution. However Paul Krugman loves cap in trade. Therefore I must conclude it has high level economic pluses hiding in its complexities. The good news is we are finally doing something. I just hope we are not past the tipping point. Looking back we should have had this tax about 1945. I wonder what we are doing today that is just as stupid as indiscriminate carbon burning. Maybe, nano plastics? For sure Genetically Modified Organism. General use of pharmaceutical drugs, psychotropics for humans, and anti biotics for animals.

Maple Syrup Science: Cooking Up Some Candy

I think that maple syrup has been insufficiently investigated in terms of culinary art. That is probably because it has been difficult to supply and it is also costly at around ten per liter or so. Thus i was pleasantly surprised when is produced a lovely natural frosting by simply combining cocoa powder and maple syrup. It is easily made and adjusted and it is naturally stable as well. A cup of syrup and perhaps two cups of powder will make all you need i am sure. This also strongly suggests that other spices can be blended in ass well. Recall that the original Aztec bl... more »

In the meantime we have a research gold rush underway to understand and apply the biochemistry and what is described for Ambian is exactly what needs to happen. Sci-Fi Cloaking Device Could Protect Soldiers from Shock Waves

I think a smart helmet could be designed around technology like this. A full body armor system may well be far too difficult but a helmet may not be. It certainly is an excellent first step. It would protect from the effect of shells exploding overhead which has been sufficient to eliminate large numbers of men who are not dug in. Better yet and more likely we could have a girdle build into all vehicles that at least handle non impact blasts. Again we need data on most probable type explosions. Impact blasts unfortunately are essentially unsurvivable anyway. We are try... more »

Saving Forests is more Effective than Planting New Trees

Well obviously. Burning off many feet of organic matrix and replacing it all with a young forest able only to sustain a few inches might have that effect. Far better to properly manage old growth forest in the first place. Just collecting the waste and chipping it provides wood pulp while improving general productivity That has never happened but it now can happen. It requires a regulatory regime that rewards superior husbandry. A correct soil philosophy has been missing in our protocols and that needs to be addressed. Once that happens the rest follows naturally. * S... more »
