The quick development and modernization of Singapore (expelled from Malaysia August 1965) into an industrialized economy in just about two decades is indeed phenomenal. The role of former PM Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) as Singapore strongman plus the market-oriented economy it adopted were key to this fast development. Why LKY was able to develop Singapore, compared to Marcos of the PH and Suharto of Indonesia? A friend of a friend has a witty but good explanation: LKY and Singapore (and Korea, Japan, Taiwan, HK, China) are Confucian. Marcos and Suharto were just confused. :-) A friend pos...more »

By a curious coincidence, both ITV News and BBC Radio 4's *Today* broadcast election reports from the same constituency with a day of each other this week. That constituency was Penrith and the Border. As that's both my childhood and my ancestral stamping ground, I was very interested in both reports. Oddly, the BBC chose, consistently, to misname the constituency 'Penrith and the Borders'. There's, in fact, no 's' on the last word of the constituency's name - something ITV got right. The revolution in unmanned aerial flight has advanced quickly and in dramatic leaps, perhaps none more momentous than the historic landing of an autonomous Navy drone on an aircraft carrier. That happened for the first time two years ago, when Northrop Grumman’s X-47B, which looks more like a UFO than a military aircraft, took off and landed on the USS George H.W. Bush. [image: Kockums A-26 class SSK]Submarine warfare is deadly enough, especially considering that they carry some of the nuclear arsenal. Now consider a radical proposal Robert Ballard recently gave at a U.S. Navy symposium: submarines with wheels that crawl on the seafloor. It's an idea that has been dormant for at least 30 years, but the the gist is this: If subs can roll around at the bottom of the sea, in terrain that would normally threaten to puncture their hulls, then they could hide out in places where that terrain reflects radio waves and live invisible for a month at a time....more »
[image: Type 052 (Luhu-class) DDG]This week, the Pentagon’s Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) released an unclassified assessment of the Chinese navy’s new capabilities and missions in the years ahead. Compared to ONI’s last unclassified analysis on the PLAN six years ago, the more than 300-ship strong Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has “made significant strides in operationalizing as well as modernizing its force,” notes the new 2015 report. Notably different from 2009 is Beijing’s current shipbuilding program, which is now focusing more on the construction of multi...more »

This comes as a surprise actually although what was modeled was a massive build out that was meant to change things. I do not think that this will actually hold up and it is certainly no reason to not proceed some day with test operations and plausibly a serious farm aimed at blocking severe hurricanes. My own thoughts on all this was to target dead zones and to prevent hurricanes. Bringing up nutrients will create huge fisheries that are always welcome. If it can done in conjunction with a local gyre, all the better. This was done in the North Pacific and a hugely boosted ...more »
Let us call it properly the effect of intention. That and guidance provides ample cause for a successful placebo outcome. What is been applied is the active power of your consciousness or more specifically your physical spirit which certainly has the capacity to make changes that can and will lead to healing. It also warns us that people die because they lose the intent to live. Thus toxic protocols are doubly dangerous as they do sap the will to live. Unfortunately it is not quite enough to be fool proof. You must understand the problem and then open yourself to such ...more »
The surprise to me is how serious and quick that the effect happens to be. That was unexpected and it powerfully put meditation on the front burner as a psychological therapy. Thirty minutes per day. I will be addressing methodology more closely in the future on this blog. I am working with an informant who has put together a multipronged protocol to achieve best results quickly. I am not prepared to sit in a Buddhist temple for thirty years and learn only how to sit. I suspect that my deep work in mathematics had much the same effect but this needs to be proved. .*Harvar...more »

"We live in radical times surrounded by tasks that seem impossible. It has become our collective fate to be alive in a time of great tragedies, to live in a period of overwhelming disasters and to stand at the edge of sweeping changes. The river of life is flooding before us, and a tide of poisons affect the air we breathe and the waters we drink and even tarnish the dreams of those who are young and as yet innocent. The snake-bitten condition has already spread throughout the collective body. However, it is in troubled times that it becomes most important to remember that the wond...more »
*"A Map to the Next World"* "In the last days of the fourth world I wished to make a map for those who would climb through the hole in the sky. My only tools were the desires of humans as they emerged from the killing fields, from the bedrooms and the kitchens. For the soul is a wanderer with many hands and feet. The map must be of sand and can't be read by ordinary light. It must carry fire to the next tribal town, for renewal of spirit. In the legend are instructions on the language of the land, how it was we forgot to acknowledge the gift, as if we were not in it or of it. Take note...more »

*“Dark Night of the Soul: Surrendering the Ego”* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "While we are in a dark night of the soul experience, hold steady knowing the light will appear once again. Whenever a word is overused, it is most likely being misused, and over time, it begins to lose its meaningfulness. For example, we often refer to a fleeting feeling of depression or a period of confusion, as a dark night of the soul, but neither of these things qualifies as such. A dark night of the soul is a very specific experience that some people encounter on their spiritual journeys. There are...more »
*"The Pig Farmer"* by John Robbins "One day in Iowa I met a particular gentleman—and I use that term, gentleman, frankly, only because I am trying to be polite, for that is certainly not how I saw him at the time. The pigs were confined in cages that were barely larger than their own bodies, with the cages stacked on top of each other in tiers, three high. The sides and the bottoms of the cages were steel slats, so that excrement fro...more »

That's the front page headline in the Times and Transcript. Think about that. Each department has to cut 5 to 10% from its budget. Think about that. Surely the purpose of a government is to serve the needs of the people who live under it. So, if a government has to cut, wouldn't it start by deciding what is essential for it to provide. And wouldn't that mean the party would have to know what its philosophy of service is? And it that's what you have to do first, then how can you begin by saying cut 5% from this department, 10% from that one, 8% from that one? But, of course, the Lib...more »

It always amazed me that there were so many elderly white men in the top jobs in the music business. I recall being in meetings where a significant number of seniors would be dozing.
