There is No Lone Wolf Terrorism: but there is anxiety about brown men, loneliness, and mental illness
There’s something about ‘lone wolf terrorism’ debates that stinks. I can’t quite find a singular source of the smell, but after further investigation, it seems the relatively recent surge in the use of the category ‘lone wolf’ to describe individual acts of political violence draws on extremely rank racist, sexist, and alarmist logic. When you […]

“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special. I just got one last thing... "Compassion In the Presence of Difficulty"
*"Compassion In the Presence of Difficulty"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM True compassion recognizes that all the boundaries we perceive between ourselves and others are an illusion. Compassion is the ability to see the deep connectedness between ourselves and others. Moreover, true compassion recognizes that all the boundaries we perceive between ourselves and others are an illusion. When we first begin to practice compassion, this very deep level of understanding may elude us, but we can have faith that if we start where we are, we will eventually feel our way toward it. City Council cannot start with prayer
Mouvement laïque québécois *v.*Saguenay (City), 2015 SCC 16 The state's duty of religious neutrality results from an evolving interpretation of freedom of conscience and religion. The evolution of Canadian society has given rise to a concept of this neutrality according to which the state must not interfere in religion and beliefs. The state must instead remain neutral in this regard, which means that it must neither favour nor hinder any particular belief, and the same holds true for non‑belief. *“On The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams”* by Chet Raymo "I seem to remember that it was Lawrence Durrell, somewhere in the "Alexandrian Quartet," who said: "Science is the poetry of the intellect, and poetry is the science of the heart.” Or something to that effect. That line has stuck in my head for thirty or forty years, without ever quite knowing what to make of it. Maybe it's time to wonder if it's saying anything meaningful. Certainly, science is the work of the intellect. One can feel a heartfelt passion while doing science, and one can experience a throb or two when observing s... more »

More intervention not the solution to housing crisis
*Guest post by Stephen Berry* A thinly-veiled call by the Reserve Bank to examine the tax status of property investors is not the solution to fixing the crisis of housing hyperinflation. What is making housing unaffordable for increasing numbers of Aucklanders is precisely the intervention by government, councils and the Reserve Bank itself.” Auckland Council is one of the main contributors to the unaffordability crisis affecting the property market. The refusal of the Council to abolish the Metropolitan Urban Limit – the planner-imposed ring-fence around the city—means that in... more »
Quote of the Day: On the world's most unaffordable housing
“‘Traffic jams,’ says Andrew Galambos, ‘are a collision between free enterprise and socialism. Free enterprise produces automobiles faster than socialism can build roads and road capacity.’ “That same collision is ever present in NZ's severely unaffordable housing markets: a demand bubble inflated by cheap credit and new immigration colliding with a supply suffocation by the socialism of the state. At a time when greater supply is desperately needed to mop up exploding demand, instead we have 'planners' -- those throwbacks to the failed central planning regimes of socialist st... more »

Relay GSE Wants to Replace Legitimate Teacher Preparation and Professional Development with Digital Merit Badges
In many areas of the country, teachers are disappearing at an alarming rate. Demoralized, terrorized, berated, hounded, bullied, and just fed up, teachers are increasingly leaving--and sharing their horror stories as they exit the classroom. Their stories, too, are finding their way through blogs, social media, and into the mainstream, and as a result university teacher education enrollment has plummeted. Without any protection from either of the teacher unions, corporate education reformers have remained free to bombard the teaching profession without fear of anti-aircraft fire ... more »

Electionearache
A painful case of electionearache. The media’s desperate attempts to engineer a Tory ‘split’ is particularly exasperating. That ‘stab in the back’ thing was clearly counterproductive, but the media’s continual attempts to pester any off-guard Conservative spokesperson they can lay their hands on to denounce it (or categorically endorse it) is even worse. Let it go, please. You can tell Theresa May and co. don’t particularly like Michael Fallon’s ill-conceived remark, but, like that game where you mustn’t say “Yes” or “No” , the sport of trying to catch-a-Tory-out is unhelpful a... more »

The phrase *Große Lüge*-- Big Lie (a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously")-- comes right from Hitler's autobiography, *Mein Kampf*, although it was his propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, who really put the phrase on the map. This week will mark the end of the beginning in the long war to end racist and classist high stakes tests. Advantage--parents, students, and teachers. It does not matter what the Pearson and Microsoft Congressmen in Washington do or don't do with their states privatization version of ESEA. This testing orgy will end, public schools will be saved and renewed, and it will done by non-violent resistance and civil disobedience. “From what I’m hearing from other superintendents, it could be at least 300,000 students across the state that opted out,” said William Cala, superintendent ...more »

Services by GEII are expected to last for up to 6 1/2 years, and includes access to a Global Supply Chain and knowledge transfer to 'up-skill' RAN personnel. Read more
Submarine patrols up 50 percent over last year
[image: Delta IV class SSBN]Many more nuclear powered submarines sail the Barents Sea and Arctic Oceans today than only a year ago. And more will come, as both new subs enter service and the Soviet built fleet will be modernized. There are at any time at least one strategic missile submarine at sea from Russia’s Northern fleet and two more on alert. “For the period from January 2014 to March 2015 the intensity of patrols by submarines has risen by almost 50 percent as compared to 2013,” says Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov. Max Born's Nobel lecture
I decided to read Max Born's 1954 Physics Nobel Prize lecture, The statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics (PDF), in some detail. Even though it was written and spoken more than 60 years ago, it makes such a perfect sense. Unsurprisingly, the lecture is a combination of physics and history. Let's look at those 12 pages. We like to think about the Copenhagen school. Born makes it clear that Niels Bohr was a guru in his eyes. But he also prefers to talk about three schools, the Copenhagen school; the Göttingen school; and the Cambridge school. He was the boss of the Götting... more »
Russia tells Sweden that hunting for its submarines is ‘a mindless waste of Swedish taxpayer money’
[image: Second sighting of Sweden's suspicious submarine]Over the weekend Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad confirmed to the press that the apparent sighting of a Russian submarine on October 31 last year was in fact just a civilian working boat, after close examination of pictures taken by a former naval officer. But, he also said, the fact that Russia was sailing submarines around Swedish waters last year remains completely true: “The assessment that Swedish territory was violated in October 2014 remains correct in its entirety.” In an extraordinary response, the Russian foreign minis... more »

Arab Leaders Agree To Form A Joint Military Force!
I think that this can come together far faster than anyone really imagines. It is totally in the best interests of all the military forces to do exactly this and engagement means training for their best troops as well. After this it will be a matter for the various stakeholders to get together and knock together a simple protocol. We forget just how fast militaries can organize alliances. Better most are trained in European traditions so the process is almost seamless. The hard reality is that the Iranian threat has not abated and it has become real in every new hot spot..... more »
Struggle of Domestic Workers in Lebanon
This provides a good snapshot of conditions in a society that is somewhere in between marginal and developed. Yet this is the good news. The workers havevwoken up to the solution itself. Form a union and empower it. Better yet form a global union that takes charge of the whole employment cycle. That is obviously needed Then women sign in to their local branch and establish availability. Employers merely go to that site and recruit as needed. The union handles critical details usually in the hands of the employer. Better yet it provides an eyeball that can challenge abuse. Thi... more »
The Incredible True Story Behind the Toronto Mystery Tunnel
This is an amusing story. It reminds us of the human need for refuge where you can retreat to the world of your own thoughts. That is often not so easy to do when surrounded by folks who all are inclined to whine for attention. Thus digging a hidey hole is a plausible option when you are twenty some and work all day on construction anyway. There are obviously far easier ways to create an refuge than this though. I am sure he will get his cabin in the woods some day. There are plenty of those around and are easy to rig out. Besides underground structure are rarely built s... more »
Conrad Black: A Reply to my Atheist Critics — They Protest too Much
It is fairly simple really. There are those who accept that GOD exists and are comfortable with all that. Then we have those attempting to reject that. Everything else on the subject is usually an exercise in human manipulation. What we do know and can now show experimentally is that Dark Matter physically exists and separately that the spirit formed from Dark Matter operates our physical existence as biological entities. Then extrapolating from natural logic we can go a huge step further and observe that the Soul is the perfect pattern of our spirit body and by exten... more »
Christians under threat in the Middle East per BBC News
Jane Corbin for the BBC reports on the persecution of Jews across the Middle East, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-32287806, there's a programme about it tonight that this article accompanies - This World: Kill The Christians will be broadcast on BBC Two on Wednesday 15 April at 21:00. The article is interesting, including where the West's invasion of Iraq is blamed for ending the Christian safety in Iraq, but it is this passage caught my eye: 'The same story is being repeated across the Middle East, where the Arab Spring unleashed forces that turned against Christia... more »

[image: Ohio class SSBN Replacement model]General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) at the Navy League’s 2015 Sea-Air-Space Exposition is showcasing for the first time a detailed Ohio Replacement scale model.
