*Alleluia * St. John Chrysostom: Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hell when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, "You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below." Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and disco... more »

*It's the birth of the "real" Mike! (Foolish as those other guys are made to look, I'll bet the actors were thrilled to be doing a scene with Jonathan Banks.) In this corner, the next-to-last episode of Season 1 of Better Call Saul registered as a "wow!"* *by Ken* There's been an inordinate amount of crap to wade through on the TV scene, but also some oases. This includes a number that probably deserve -- and may yet get -- individual attention, but which I didn't want to go uncelebrated. *WASN'T THAT AN AWESOME BETTER CALL SAUL?* I'll be interested to go back and rewatch all t... more »

John Napier: an anniversary

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 12 hours ago
For decades, my Australian uncle lived in the Napier Street, Melbourne. I guess that the street was named after a different Napier than John Napier, however. John Napier, the father of natural logarithms, was born on an unknown day of 1550. He died on April 4th, 1617 i.e. 398 years ago. This Scottish laird of Merchinston (a member of gentry) was known as the Marvellous Merchinston and his education may serve as a good model for everyone. Why? He only entered school when he was 13 years old. He dropped shortly afterwards. And then, at the age of 24, he bought a castle at Gartness. Y... more »

American And Iranian Extremists Are United... In Hatred

Rightwing crackpots Ahmad Tavakkoli and Tom Cotton Normal Iranians and normal Americans seemed pretty optimistic about the deal announcement Thursday. In fact, in Iran, "ecstatic" is probably a better description than optimistic-- at least among Tehran's middle class. For Americans, far more subjected to a ceaseless barrage of extremist propaganda, optimism was as far as it could be expected to go. And in the most backward parts of the U.S., particularly the old slave-holding states of the Confederacy, there is no optimism at all-- just another reason, among so many, to be perpetual... more »
