Checking In On Sean Eldridge's Campaign In Upstate New York… Oy
This morning Alex Isenstadt did a provocatively titled article for *Politico*, The Worst Campaigns of 2014. How hard is it to point to Eric Canter's loss and laugh your ass off now? Or Pat Roberts'? Or Chris McDaniels'? I'm looking for some Beltway pundits who wrote that Cantor was in trouble before Dave Brat popped out of the fascist swamp to beat the Majority Leader back home. More interesting that these obvious banner races, however, is Isenstadt's inclusion of poor (which) Sean Eldridge. It's been clear since last spring, when Isenstadt wrote his classic Chasing Sean Eldridge ... more »

Quagmire? We're Specialists, It Seems (All Calling for Leadership Before Now Want Boots on the Ground?) Meltdown Political Theater In Action
Anyone who predicted that here is where we were headed long ago has now won the bet. A very bad bet. With a lot of casualties upcoming. But lots of profits for the military-industrial complex. And somewhere they are all standing and applauding. Because they cannot lose now. Almost everything that is happening now suggests this will end badly. We've failed to curb ISIS in Iraq because,

Sept. 25: smoking, insanity, and our world...
Sixty-four years ago, tobacco company stocks were the yellow brick road to wealth. Then, in 1950, Reader's Digest ran an article titled "Cancer by the Carton", warning of the dangers of smoking tobacco. The tobacco companies reacted quickly. They set up a foundation to do "research" proving that tobacco was harmless. (Some admitted the danger, but advertised its filter tips as sure protection.) Camel cigarettes ran ads for years that featured pictures of doctors in white coats saying that Camels were recommended by more doctors than any other cigarette. Bombing ISIS: A Question
Early last month with ISIS/ISIL/IS running amok in northern Iraq and leaving a trail of bodies in its wake, I argued there was a temporary coincidence of interest between the US/UK, the decaying apparatus of sectarian Iraqi state, the Kurds and the opportunities for labour movement and socialist politics in the region. Since then air strikes have happened, special forces are in action, the collapse of Iraq has been stymied by a new power sharing deal, and weapons and training have flowed to the Kurdish peshmerga. *Islamic State Crisis: US Hits IS Oil Targets In Syria -- BBC* The US-led coalition against Islamic State (IS) has targeted 12 oil refineries in Syria on a third night of air strikes against the militants. Raids carried out by US, Saudi and UAE aircraft killed 14 of the group's fighters and five civilians in eastern Syria, activists said. According to the Pentagon, the refineries generated up to $2m (£1.2m) per day in revenue for the militants. In northern Syria, Kurdish forces say they have pushed back an IS advance. US President Barack Obama has vowed to dismantle the IS "networ... more »
UP Hooligans, Part 4
This article by Prof. Antonio “Tonton” Contreras was widely shared in facebook yesterday. It looks cool, well-written, but not necessarily well-argued. *An open letter to the UP Hooligans a.k.a. enemies of UP* Among the urban legends propagated by this article are, *For some, your act was so abominable to a point that 23 members of the faculty of the School of Economics of your University, my Alma Mater, rushed to defend Abad and condemn you in strong words…* *In calling you as enemies, they took the side of Abad. Silicon Valley Corporatists
James Hall Remember the days when an entrepreneur would perfect their whiz kid ideas in a garage and bring them to market? Did Steve Wozniak ever envision the behemoth that Apple would become and the cult camp that worships every new product that flows from their robotic coolie assembly lines? Riots Over Rotten Apple Mania describes an example of the forbidding underbelly of corporatist business model that Apple exemplifies so dramatically. I was given tickets to Ringling Brothers in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own. Last night I took my girls to the Circus, my two daughters and my youngest sister. Before we entered the circus, it had been a rough day. My 5-year-old experienced mean kids at school for the first time and my heart was breaking for her, it was amazing to watch it all melt away as entered the circus. I seriously spent so little time watching the circus and so much time watching the girls. THE HOUSES OF NANTUCKET COUNTY: A slightly comical demographic!

Premier Abadi Retires Two Of Iraq’s Top Generals, But Members Of Parliament Wants Them Prosecuted
On September 21, 2014 Islamic State (IS) led insurgents captured an army base in Saqlawiya, which is to the north of Fallujah in Anbar. Some 300 soldiers were said to have died with others captured. This was the largest military collapse since the fall of Tikrit in June. In response Premier Haider Abadi retired two top commanders in the Iraqi army General Abboud Qanbar, the deputy chief of staff of operations and General Ali Ghidan the Ground Forces Commander. US Strike on Syria is Desperation Incarnate
Tony Cartalucci The West was racing against the clock – attempting to justify war with Syria by allegedly “fighting” the so-called “Islamic State” (ISIS) in Syria before the world fully realized the West and its allies had in fact created ISIS in the first place and was to this day arming, funding, and directing them. In haste that can only be described as desperation bordering criminal insanity, the West announced that it has begun air and missile attacks on Syrian territory. It alleges that it is attacking ISIS, however – and unlike its campaign in neighboring Iraq – the US in... more »

NSA Intercepts Were Key In Locating The Key Leaders Of The Khorasan Group
*NSA Intercepts Key To Locating, Bombing New Al Qaeda Group In Syria -- Washington Times* Intelligance agency’s surveillance key to airstrikes on al Qaeda offshoot in Syria The U.S. ability to pinpoint with airstrikes the operational hubs of the al Qaeda offshoot Khorasan Group in Syria and penetrate one of its bombing plots shows the importance of the much-maligned National Security Agency, defense analysts said Tuesday. The Khorasan Group is an especially hard target because, unlike other al Qaeda spinoffs, it stays in the shadows and refrains from pronouncements on social medi... more »
The Haig Doctrine - New York Times, March 20 1981
WASHINGTON, March 19— Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. said today that the Reagan Administration would try to develop a strategic ''consensus'' to counter the Soviet Union in an area stretching from Pakistan to Egypt and including such disparate nations as Turkey, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. Haig also held out the possibility of improved relations with Iraq, one of the most anti-Israel nations in the region, and one that has been closely identified with the Soviet Union in the past. He said Washington had noted ''... more »

Why Did The U.S. Bomb Islamic State Targets In The Middle Of The Night When Everyone In ISIL Was Home Sleeping?
*My Comment:* It is a good question .... why bomb these buildings in the middle of the night when everyone was home sleeping ... why not bomb them in the middle of the day when all of these Islamic State leaders and their support staff would be working in their offices and in the buildings that were targeted and bombed. All that these airstrikes did was kill a few janitors and security staff .... and for a short time (maybe) disrupt their command and control centers.

Foget Steve Israel's Utter Incompetence And Grotesque Corruption For A Minute-- Will Boehner Be Speaker Again?
Boehner's lawsuit against Obama is turning out to be the bust most people predicted it would be. A Federal Court of Appeals threw out an almost identical lawsuit yesterday. Henry Decker, writing for the *National Journal*: "When House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) announced his plan to sue President Barack Obama for delaying enforcement of the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate, the reviews were swift and negative. Legally, the lawsuit seemed destined for failure. Politically, it looked like a dud that could actively backfire on the GOP." This morning Greg Sargent warned about ... more »
An Increasingly Remarkable Series of Unprovoked Bullying Attacks Puts Brian Leiter in the Sight of Open Statement Signed by A Growing Number of Philosophers in US and Worldwide
Brian Leiter, well-known philosopher at the University of Chicago law school and even more well-known philosophy blogger, has recently come under some heavy criticism from colleagues in North America and overseas, following a remarkably strange series of completely unprovoked, outright nasty, harassing and openly threatening email-attacks against Carrie Ichikawa Jenkins, philosopher at the universities of British Columbia and Aberdeen, and some others. These as well as the one against Jenkins are documented here and here. The latter of these resources also offers the following furth... more »
The science is settled, says Leo
With stiff competition from an assortment of loony luminaries, Carbon Dioxide gives their Clown of the Year Award this year to man-child Leonardo di Caprio, a fellow who pretends for a living. His performances in recent weeks have been exceptional, culminating in his claims that sea ice is disappearing, his hypocritical appearance at the so-called People’s Climate March ( losing his hearing when asked about his yachts, for example), and lecturing the UN on climate change (also without mentioning his four homes, private jets and renting the FIFTH biggest yacht in the world from an... more »

Keep yer clothes on, Scott Brown -- Cosmo's now "picking brains over brawn"
*Isn't it just like us to be trotting out -- yet again -- these ancient beefcake pictures? Sure, but ask yourself whether they aren't still the most noteworthy thing about our Scott.* *by Ken* Before we get to the, er, meat of this story, could we pause for a bit of, er, dressing? Namely, *Cosmo* is now doing political endorsements? Huh? It might be useful here to have some political strategists to poll on the expected impact of a *Cosmo* endorsement. I'm not suggesting that *Cosmo* readers don't vote. I bet a lot of them do. Or at least as high a precentage as that of non-*Cosmo*... more »

"Being Human: A Personal Credo"
"Being Human: A Personal Credo" by John Robbins "There is so much pain and death in our times. This is not an easy time to be a person of conscience and feeling. It can be terribly hard today to stay in touch with your deep soul. It can seem all but impossible to keep your love alive. The world has a way of blowing relentless hurricane winds at our little flickering candles of faith. This is what I have to say at this time in history. Insanity is not what it was
Just for the record, since I’m officially sick of hearing that "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." Not only is that not the definition of insanity, Einstein never said that.* And not only did he not say it, what’s wrong with doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? Ever heard of metal fatigue? Or tipping points? Anyway, there is a respectable definition of insanity that we can use over and over: *Insanity.** n. mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantas... more »

The ongoing disintegration of what was once a free country into an authoritarian fascist police state under the helm of El Presidente Barack Obama is now evolving. *'We're Not Sure Their Capabilities Match Their Desire' -- Shane Harris/John Hudson/Justine Drennan, Toronto Star And Foreign Policy* Is the Khorasan Group as dangerous as the White House is making it out to be? Before the first U.S. military aircraft attacked the headquarters of the Islamic State in Raqqa, Syria, early Tuesday morning, waves of American Tomahawk cruise missiles began pounding targets 130 miles west, near the battleground city of Aleppo. They weren't targeting the Islamic State, though. They were battering the training camps and explosives-making facilities of a... more »
Taken out to the Woodshed
*Woodshed* There is a common expression in english..."Someone is going to be taken out to the woodshed". It means that someone is going to be severely punished. This expression harkens back to the days when the father of the family was the supreme disciplinarian and one of the primary parenting rules was "Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child". Children were regularly taken out to the woodshed and given a strapping by their father. In a large family such as I grew up in, there was always a hush in the household when someone was going to be disciplined. You could feel the dread ... more »
