Major new features coming to Hangouts. Looks like we'll soon be able to broadcast hangouts and record them, too. I hear these will come to a small set of users first, then spread to the rest of us. As soon as I get these features I'll use them a LOT. Good stuff!

Iraq Rejects NATO Trainers

On December 12, 2011, Iraq’s National Security Advisor Faleh al-Fayadh told reporters that the NATO training mission would not be extended past the end of the year. Fayadh said that the Iraqi government would not grant NATO advisers immunity. He went on to say that he was disappointed that the Western alliance would not be able to continue on with its work, but the Iraqi government was not going to budge on the issue of legal exemption. The rejection of the NATO advisers comes on the heels of Baghdad turning down offers by the United States to keep several thousand military advisers in the country after the 2011 withdrawal deadline. In both cases, the Iraqi parliament was unwilling to grant the foreign trainers immunity.

The continuing tussle over the future of AquaBounty Technology’s genetically modified salmon is heating up again this week, as a U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard prepares to hear testimony on Thursday addressing the potential environmental impacts and safety issues surrounding the salmon—including risks to wild fish stocks."

Supreme Court to judge on patents for treating disease

Prometheus Laboratories in San Diego, California, holds a patent on guidelines for treating gastrointestinal diseases. It is battling the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota over claims that the clinic's methods of treating these diseases conflict with its patent, which covers dosage adjustments that tell doctors how much medicine should be prescribed based on metabolites in the body.

China punishes America for unfair trade practices

The tariffs will be applied for two years to passenger cars and sports utility vehicles with engine capacities of 2.5 litres or more and will take effect Thursday, the ministry said in a statement.
The decision will affect vehicles produced by General Motors, Chrysler Group, BMW Manufacturing, Mercedes-Benz US International, American Honda Motor and Ford Motor.
More here. Chinese media says the move will only apply to 50,000 vehicles, but the symbolic impact may be significant. The tariff would appear to be a shot fired across the bow of an American government that has recently inched closer toward identifying China as a currency manipulator, thereby enabling the Treasury to impose tariffs on Chinese goods.

How Designing Smarter Farmers' Markets Will Help Our Cities Survive

No, This Is Why You're Fat!/via

But the tools and techniques that revolutionized agriculture came at a cost. It is massively dependent on fossil fuels for equipment and fertilizers. Farmers cannot make enough money to live on farming alone. There is massive concentration of ownership (two seed companies control 60% of the market, four companies control 83% of the meat packing industry) so that farmers have little control over the prices they sell their products for. Half of the corn they grow is now used for making fuel, so the price of food is skyrocketing at the same time that the customers are losing their jobs or cutting back on spending because of the economy and debt.

Christians Aren't Behind America's Climate Problem, But They May Be the Solution

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano recently directed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to develop a national-level mass migration plan. The plan must outline how to address the health care, sheltering, processing, transition and disposition of large numbers of undocumented individuals who may arrive in the United States as the result of mass migration.

Immigration Crackdown Also Snares Americans

American citizens have been confined in local jails after federal immigration agents, acting on flawed information from Department of Homeland Security databases, instructed the police to hold them for investigation and possible deportation.

Americans said their vehement protests that they were citizens went unheard by local police and jailers for days, with no communication with federal immigration agents to clarify the situation. Any case where an American is held, even briefly, for immigration investigation is a potential wrongful arrest because immigration agents lack legal authority to detain citizens.
