The Flaw Pilger Doesn’t See.
Ace reporter John Pilger was holding forth to Justin Webb about his new film, aired last night on ITV.
“When we’re embedded,” he bleated, “we distort the news by peddling the government line.”
Image by Getty Images via @daylife Conclusive proof that the BBC is biased in favour of Israel.The Pilger programme is on ITV iPlayer. One of Pilger’s theories seems to be: if only people knew that war is a nasty business there wouldn’t be any more wars.
Pilger is no peacemaker however. He is full of hate and malice.
The Palestinian section demonstrates why this filmette is so hypocritical. Pilger detests Israel so much that he has overlooked the fact that the thesis underpinning the whole thing doesn’t hold up when applied to what he calls ‘Palestine’. He promises to show that ‘embedding’ influences reporting. Which reporters does he think are embedded with the IDF?

Take a few minutes to hear the story of Adeeb Abu Rahma of Bil’in. It’s not part of the big diplomatic news like the Obama-Netanyahu meeting this week, but in a sense, it’s more important. Far from being unique, this case captures most of what there is to know about the current stage of the Israeli occupation in the West Bank. It’s the kind of things you have to keep in mind when you read the morning news.
Adeeb Abu Rahma is a resident of Bil’in, the village which became the symbol of non-violent resistance to the occupation. A few years ago, Israel decided to build its security barrier on Palestinian land, and not on the Green Line, the historic border between Israel and the West Bank. A Racist Decree
On Tuesday, the 7th of December, some fifty Israeli rabbis issued a "decree" forbidding their Jewish fellow citizens from "renting or selling homes or land to Arabs and other non-Jews." The "decree" was soon endorsed by an additional 250 Israeli rabbis. That makes about 300 in all, most of orthodox persuasion and many of great influence. Just to make sure that those who have property to rent or sell know what is at stake, the same rabbis announced that those Jews who fail to obey will be "ostracized."
There has been some protest about this. Rabbis who do not agree with this command called it a "distortion of Jewish religious law." Well maybe. Cass Sunstein, Wikileaks and The Public Right to Know
Even if it was never made explicit by the mainstream media, only the most credulous magical thinkers among the population can have avoided the conclusion that the US, Israeli and British governments justified the Iraq invasion with bare-faced lies. Not just, mistakes, or misunderstandings or ‘we acted on the intelligence that was available to us’, but conscious bloody lies aimed at ‘manipulating public opinion’; and they were largely successful.
Fascist airport procedures justified by ink cartridge bombs of dubious origin and FBI setups have begun to dull the edge of the fear that ‘Islamic terrorism’ formerly provoked, and has begun to raise troubling questions about what the real nature of that ‘terrorist threat’ is. This last idea, taken too far, might also lead to more focus on that question of questions – 9/11… Now, as an imaginary member of the global elite, I would be far from happy with these global public awareness stakes, and while I would understand that I cannot turn the clock back and undo it all, neither would I accept defeat. I would instead attempt to contain, channel and misdirect that awareness.
Sunstein co-wrote a truly pernicious paper proposing that the U.S. Government employ teams of covert agents and pseudo-”independent” advocates to “cognitively infiltrate” online groups and websites — as well as other activist groups — which advocate views that Sunstein deems “false conspiracy theories” about the Government. This would be designed to increase citizens’ faith in government officials and undermine the credibility of conspiracists. Sunstein advocates that the Government’s stealth infiltration should be accomplished by sending covert agents into “chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups.” He also proposes that the Government make secret payments to so-called “independent” credible voices to bolster the Government’s messagingthose who appear independent while secretly acting on behalf of the Government). This program would target those advocating false “conspiracy theories,” which they define to mean: “an attempt to explain an event or practice by reference to the machinations of powerful people, who have also managed to conceal their role.
Christian Reconstructionism
The social structure advocated by Christian Reconstructionism would have the clergy, laity and government, individually and corporately, to be in ultimate submission to the moral principles of the Bible, including the Old Testament, while retaining their separate jurisdictional spheres of authority and roles in society as inferred from principles of biblical law, both Old and New Testaments. It is the claim of Christian Reconstructionism that even as under the Davidic administration of the Israelites, the Priests (Levitical line) and Kings (Davidic line) were distinguished by their scopes of authority (e.g., the King could not offer sacrifices for others and the Priests could not pass or enforce legislation) and their roles in society (e.g., the King maintained the social welfare and the Priests maintained personal welfare), so it should be in a modern Christian Reconstructionist society.
