BURMA: Sr. Shan State Army officer responds to criticism over joining junta-run Border Guard Force

The SSA-N official representing brigades #3 and #7 claimed that the groups had no choice but to join and would offer more stability for Shan state.
Sai Leun, the leader of NDAA better known as Mongla group, commented that the SSA-N was: “acting only in its interest and not for the interests of the people”, adding that the group’s name is supposed to represent the whole Shan State and not just the territory in the north which will be most affected by the developments.
Those in the lower ranks of the SSA have indicated they share Sai Leun’s sentiments by defecting to join the steadfastly resistant First Brigade and the anti-Naypyitaw Shan State Army (SSA) ‘South’, which remain the principal armed opposition movement against Burma’s military rulers.
Groups who agree to transform themselves into BGF must accept Burmese military officials who will occupy most of the key positions in running the force, such as administration, personnel and material support departments.
Ministers dismantle £60m programme to prevent violent extremism
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/jul/13/ministers-dismantle-programme-prevent-violent-extremism
The government's £60m "preventing violent extremism" programme is to be dismantled after a widespread loss of confidence in it within Muslim communities, it was confirmed today.
The Home Office said there would be a clear separation in future between counter-terrorism work on individuals directly at risk of becoming radicalised and more general work to combat social exclusion in Muslim communities. Official tours of the country by Muslim scholars to challenge al-Qaida-inspired ideology are also likely to end. The credibility of the Prevent programme was damaged by a widespread belief in communities that it was being used to gather intelligence on potential terror suspects.
The Home Office disclosed the decision as part of its structural reform plan, published as the home secretary, Theresa May, outlined to MPs the scope of the "urgent" review of counterterrorism and security powers to be carried out this summer in time for changes to be included in the coalition's freedom bill this autumn.
May told MPs that the review will look at six powers: control orders, the use of section 44 stop and search powers – especially their use against photographers – local authority surveillance powers, pre-charge detention, measures to deal with organisations that promote hatred, and the deportation of international terrorist suspects.
"These are the most controversial and sensitive powers," said May. She added that the review would also look at safeguards in the asset-freezing regime for terrorist suspects, which has been the subject of repeated human rights rulings.

Terahertz Detectors Could See Through Your Clothes From a Mile Away
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/07/terahertz-detection
Using terahertz remote sensing, detectors could see through walls, clothing and packaging materials and immediately identify the unique terahertz waves of the materials contained inside, such as explosives or drugs.
Two lasers at different frequencies aimed at the target together generate a plasma (basically excited, or ionized air). This plasma emits a florescence that is scattered in characteristic ways by the terahertz radiation of the material it hits. The reflection of the florescence is detectable from remote distances

BP shares rise as Deepwater Horizon well repairs progress ‘as planned’
The Guardian, 12 Jul
[Excerpt:] – Shares in BP rose more than 5% in early trading today as the oil firm said the latest attempt to cap the gushing well in the Gulf of Mexico is proceeding “as planned”.
[Blogmaster* comment: Under normal circumstances I wouldn't pay much attention this story or its headline - except that in this case the "original headline" that came over the RSS feed was "Oil gushes at full force from BP well." Obviously the original headline ruffled too many feathers, but the fact is that the first headline is justified based on the story's contents. An interesting read.]

Mysterious Cosmic Rays Traced At Last To Source
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/11/mysterious-cosm
Paths of high-energy rays were highly correlated with galaxies that have so-called Active Galactic Nuclei, or massive black holes that are throwing out unusual amounts of particles and energy while they consume dust, gas and other material. Most galaxies are believed to contain black holes, but not all are of this prodigious type.
