Who Could Have Known!
Last night Roland, a school teacher, admitted he thought I was crazy when I told him in January that the schools would soon be shut down for the rest of the year. We had just come back from Thailand. I had been wearing a mask in crowded situations-- like on the BTS (train), even though no one had heard the word "coronavirus" in December. On the way home I wore my mask on the Korean airline that took us home. Roland said that I was frightening the other passengers. I laughed. He was sitting behind a passenger who sneezed and coughed his way across the Atlantic after our long layover... more »

*Humpback whales spout out slow, but steady recovery* Humpback whales are one of nature’s most majestic animals. Usually identified by their enormous size, curious songs and aerial acrobatics, they were once in numbers approximating 200,000 in the southern hemisphere alone. Today its numbers have been reduced to about 16,200, due primarily to unrestricted hunting that took place in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Fortunately, humpback whales are making a comeback south of the equator. One such place where progress is being made is at the Francisco Coloane Marine Park near the ... more »

Dumbo octopuses are the deepest and cutest living of all known octopuses
Dumbo octopuses are the deepest living of all known octopuses! They live in the open ocean, reaching to depths of at least 13,100 feet and perhaps much deeper! The gentle dumbo octopus, also known as an umbrella octopus, is named for its ear-like fins that resemble the Disney character Dumbo's oversize elephant ears. There are 13 species of dumbo octopuses, and most of them live at depths of below 9,800 feet (3,000 meters). Why Governments Must Act to Reduce Maternal Death Rates
*Candace Johnson* *Public Health, World* [image: Reuters] Here's why governments must act now. Women die in childbirth at alarming rates. Maternal death is an excellent example of what the famous economist and philosopher Amartya Sen calls a “remediable injustice” — a condition that is fundamentally unfair and within our capacity to change. Access to health services is better in more affluent, developed countries, so women die of pregnancy and childbirth-related complications at much lower rates than their counterparts in developing countries.
